I was iffy about the supers only at first up until I played the game. Then it all clicked. Waiting for that sweet sweet moment to knock out as many people as possible with the lowest super you have - it's beautiful. That grind to LVL 3 where you become the death bringer is nothing I've experienced in SSB. Really, it's fun. If you go ahead and look/play it and TRY, TRYYYY not to compare it to SSB it's awesome as hell.
Oh I have an open mind to games. I'm judging it simply by mechanics and true, having bias to Smash familiarity has its place. Then again I did truly enjoy Jump SS and Dream TV.

It's the concept of supers that turns me off really. Again, comparing it to Dream TV has DTV pulling it off well due to how there is no true "scoring" involving supers.

A beta is going on right now.
Please head over to the beta thread then :)

People have been playing for a week or so and discussionevery gameplay element/moves of character of the available characters and also have described how good and different the game is.
Ahem.

people are playing it (i.e. not testing it)

can't believe I missed those "Bayonetta = DMC with a chick" and "isn't Bayonetta a ripoff of DMC"

This thread has been a goldmine for laughs.

When was this screencap taken?* If you look at any video on the Playstation channel they always have a ton of superfluous tags (e.g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdm2n_w9BzI ) so this was either a photoshop or some guy who uploaded it trying to be funny. And in that case I'm not sure what it's supposed to prove.

*I should have known to look at the date in the corner.
This was posted right after Sony's E3 2012 conference on Sony's account, I saw it and It was so funny.

Basicly this.

It's like you are not allowed to enjoy games that are rip-offs or something.
Guys let's get this clarified.

Inspired by =/= Rip-Offs

Something like Uncharted is inspired by other games in it's genre.
Gameloft ripsoff games.
It's a pretty big distinction.
Use your brains.

The game is clearly a rip-off. Everything about it, as it seems at the moment, is entirely identical to Super Smash Bros--style, combat, purpose, etc. But that doesn't mean it can't be a good game. I am cautiously optimistic about it.

so if you play the game differently and the objective is different....it's still the same game? What?
The concept is very similar, a slight change of game rules doesn't change the fact that it's a creatively bankrupt game, a slightly different copy of an existing popular game.
Note that I didn't say it was a bad game or anything. But personally I like creativity so l already don't like this game on principle alone, plus it's not my style of game. I don't like SSB either by the way.

Regardless whether he made the original or not, technically Bayonetta is a rip-off of Capcom's DMC series.
This is a baffling sentiment. I'm trying to think of an analogy, but the topic at hand is the best one imaginable.

Um, how about, "Regardless of whether Prince made the music of his first album or not, technically his other albums are rip-offs of Warner Bros' 'For You,' by Prince."?

The contortions people are going through to try and make this game NOT seem like a rip-off of Smash Bros. is fascinating.

Hint: Nobody is commenting on the quality of the game, guys. It's the concept and the presentation, and a lot of the basic mechanics. Everybody knows this is an attempt to cash in on the success of Smash Bros.

Thing is, many consumers LOVE rip-offs. Hell, I'm sure plenty of Sony fans were excited when they heard a "Sony Smash Bros." was in the works, with all of the rip-off connotations that has. And Sony knew that going in, which is what the "Youtube tags" image is all about.

If it was a truly unique game many wouldn't be as excited. This is cashing in on the fun and memories of Smash Bros. It's cashing in on a known quantity. Even if it's throwing its own tweaks and stuff, the fact that it's a rip-off can't really be disputed.

It can be a fun game in its own right. I know plenty of Sony fans loved Crash Team Racing, which was another Mario Kart rip-off. And it was pretty good, even. They did it again with LBP Karting.

But let's stop trying to pretend like it's not one. We all know it is, and trying to insist it's not is frankly just embarrassing.

Personally, I respect Kamiya's opinion and agree with him on this. I think PAbStBR is pretty shameless. But it doesn't mean it shouldn't come out, and it doesn't mean it can't be fun. I'm sure plenty will love it.

Can't say I've ever played those games though I DESPERATELY want to play Jump SS. Well I respect your opinion and I hope we can all just play whatever game we want.

And have JUMP SS EFFIN LOCALIZED GODDADMIRJAHDSAJSDA

It is a rip off.

Anyone who says otherwise is seriously a fanboy.

Granted that doesn't mean it can't be a fun rip off.
But you know, he is totally right.
Its a rip off, even sony knows that by putting the name super smash bros on their youtube tag videos.

All of this right here. At best you can say he should give the game a shot, because it may very well turn out to be a great game. But it is copying like hell conceptually, Im sorry, that much is not up for debate guys. Anyone denying that is insane. The SSB youtube tag is just hilarious.

That being said though, its perfectly ok that they copied the concept. It happens in gaming all the damn time. But folks need to stop being so offended when people dare to point out how much it copies. Make peace with it for the sake of your own health. That's going to be 90% of peoples first reaction/comparison when seeing and playing the game.

I haven't read the whole thread but has there been anyone who has played the game and/or the beta and said it's a ripoff, or just people looking and judging? Almost all impressions says it plays quite different.

Game seems boring to me. All hitting people does is build meter. It doesn't hurt the other players unless you use a super. It's lots of aimless mashing from the gameplay videos I've seen.
Being hit means you are spending time not gaining AP by time spent getting comboed, on the ground, or flying through the air. The ones that know to block have a huge advantage in this game. And you have to be very focused on defending supers.

Plus those videos are 4 player FFA with time limits. The game could be very different in 1v1 or 2v2 stock modes.

I love how you criticize each and every thing related to Sony.

Anyways great way to dismiss any developer efforts, its far from being shameless

At this point isn't any new IP a rip off in some form? Unless a game creates a brand new genre ( did Smash Bros. even invent the brawler style games?) Every game has influences and mechanics that look a lot like other games.

Even this guy's own games could be considered rip offs if using his thinking. Bayonetta is a rip off of devil may cry, P 100 is a rip off of Pikman. I don't think they are myself as it is a poor use of the word. Heavily influenced is the better word. Rip off is copying something bit for bit. In the instance of PSASBR and many other games this is not the case.

When was this screen cap taken? I'm pretty sure they NEVER had SSB tags on their own videos. Had to double check the video myself, no SSB tags to be seen
No its absolutely real. Im sure they themselves know that the game is clearly similar, hence the tag..... This is not people stretching to make a connection or reaching, its extremely blatantly obvious.

The people that have played it are saying that it's inspired by SSB while the people that haven't are calling it a ripoff with minor differences. Even Game Trailers said that when they went into they expected it to be a SSB ripoff and tried to play it like one but quickly had to change how they played it because they were getting killed.

I think it comes down to semantics.

You call Shadow Complex a rip-off of Super Metroid. I would merely say it's inspired.
I would say the same of Garshasp and God of War.

What I call a rip-off is The Ville or Dream Heights.

It's the same way people don't say Doom-clones or Street Fighter-clones any more. Surface comparisons are just bad in general.
Totally true, it is just a battle of semantics.

Although I should say that I worded it poorly, I agree that Shadow Complex is inspired by Super Metroid.

Although I may just feel that way because it has been so long since Super Metroid came out, you can just make your own version of it without seeming like a ripoff.

I think I just figured out what I consider a ripoff: One game (or movie or whatever) that takes the style of another for the sole purpose of profit. The Ville or Dream Heights easily fall into this category, while Shadow Complex, because it has been so long since Super Metroid came out, does not.

PASBR is a odd middle ground: it has been 4 years since Brawl, but Brawl is one of the best selling games on the Wii. Rip off is too harsh, inspired by does not go far enough.

What it comes down to: I think if Smash had never come out, I don't think PASBR would be out either. Or, perhaps more appropriately, if Smash had not been popular, PASBR would never have been made.

I totally agree with Kamiya. Actually, it's not so much that the game is a rip off that bothers me, it's the fact that my eyes become heavy and I fight to stay awake whenever I see pictures of the games or avatars of the characters. I don't think I've ever been so bored and uninterested in a game/new IP in the longest time. I couldn't care less if the game is "well made" or "well crafted" or "good for what it's going for", etc. Just the thought of Playstation Battle Whatever puts me to sleep. I guess I'm not the only guy out there that feels like this. It's cool to see real talk from devs who aren't afraid to speak their mind.

Yeah, it seems like the layout of the visual elements and the angle of the fight scene make it a ripoff, along the mascot thingy.

Essentially, any fighting game is a ripoff going by that logic, since they feature fighting masters, side view angles and health bars on top.

It's a copy conceptually, but yes, it plays completely differently. Coming from someone who has play it himself.

And it's fun. That is all.

No idea why people are so mad at such a thing. If there were 20 more copies, then people would be less mad, why?

1) How can you rip off yourself? That's against the very definition of a rip off.
2) P-100 plays nothing like Pikmin and has no similarities besides the whole bunch of people following you aroud

Pretty much yeah, although if someone says X game is clearly copying X game you dont usually get so much pushback. In the case of this game, the copying of the concept is obvious as shit, but you have this vocal set of folks who absolutely refuse to cede that its there, and aggressively attack anyone who dares mention it. That is what fuels these conversations.

I can't believe there are still people saying this...

Kamiya stating the obvious. Game will probably sell more than Bayonetta and P100 combined tho.
The latter depends, especially with Nintendo backing him instead of Sega.

Here's a fun exercise.

Let's describe the gameplay without using the words "Smash Bros." or "Mascot brawler".
I prefer calling it 2d arena fighter. Hell, by its core it's a fighting game, but elitists hate it being treated as fighters :p
