Hideo Baba (Tales) helming new Square Enix studio Studio Istolia, making new RPG

Loving the concept arts.

Probably a mobile game, but if you look at that part of the aim of the studio, 'to provide unforgettable stories that will inspire players in their own lives, and bring new game experiences to everyone around the world', it doesn't sound like the premise of a mobile game.

Who the hell decides of the project names for these things?

Not as bizarre as Project Octopath Traveler.
At least you can get/guess what Octopath Traveler mean, which is 'a traveler of eight paths' is what I understand.
Bravely Default is a satanic talisman of a name, this is decent in comparison!

I'd like to think that going on such a visible hiring spree would mean it's a console (Switch and/or PS4) game, but the highest production value mobile games nowadays probably also need large-ish teams that might need to attract a lot of talent this way, so not sure if that can be used as indication of it being one way or the other.

The recruitment pages listed on the studio's site are for a 3D game for "high-end platforms". Whether that means high-end console platforms or high-end mobile platforms is up to your imagination, but it seems to be a big project.

Though they also require experience with Unreal 4 and Unity, which makes it seem like they haven't even chosen an engine yet.

Some details from the site that people aren't talking about:

- This is a studio that is made to launch a brand new RPG IP. Not a single game
- It is also a recruitment campaign for the studio, they are hiring planners, designers, and programmers
- The spec they are hiring for is "high end systems", and they welcome experience in UE4 and Unity
- They are also looking for Battle planners and programmers with Action RPG experience, which indicates the direction of the combat
- This is a subsidiary of S-E Holdings, and not just an internal studio of S-E Japan, this is similar to Tokyo RPG Factory, their own company

Interest rising.

Fingers crossed for console game.

Hmm this actually does sound like it's not a mobile game. That's actually really exciting.

The name ISTOLIA originates from the Greek word, "story" and is central to the studio's primary value.

The actual word for "story" in Greek is istoria but Japanese people pronounce "L" as an "R"

Never change Japan <3

This honestly feels very Tokyo RPG Factory-like to me. They announce a game with a "Project" codename. They say the new studio will focus on RPGs and then there's a recruitment campaign.

Probably the one thing that is different is I could see this game being given a higher budget than Setsuna as Square seemed to have learned from "only give budgets to the third game in the franchise" mistake.

Yep that looks like a mobile game.

Nice concept art for sure though

Edit- reading Ducks post maybe not mobile then? Hmm that sounds like a console game surprisingly
