Hollow Knight - Beautifully animated 2D 'vania - On Kickstarter

I'm curious how far development is with this title. I'm a bit cautious with ks now, I haven't received a single game I've backed so far :/

Backed!

Awesome. Can't wait to play it on Wii U

On Wii U? I've gotten Shovel Knight and Pier Solar so far, and Starwhal seems to be just around the corner. There are a bunch I backed that are mia though, and recent developments on Cosmochoria have me worried.

Had no idea there was a thread on this game. I backed it a while back. Seriously, they had me at metroidvania. Really excited to play it.
Edit: Just saw they updated the stretch goals with vita. :'(

Thanks for the back AkelisRain! We really want to hit Vita too, but with a 3 man team we'd kill ourselves if we set the goal any lower. We've already got a tonne on our plate with all the additional content + Wii U release!

Haven't backed the former two. Cosmochoria looks already bleak. Others:

  • Monochroma (now porting to Xbone, no idea about the rest, thumbs up)
  • CANDLE (takes more time)
  • Ghost Song (takes more time)
  • Liege (still in Alpha)
  • Armikrog (takes more time)
  • Soul Saga (takes more time)
  • A Hat in Time (takes more time)

I'm still thinking about this game, I love the art style but I don't want to play this in 2016 or whenever.

Hi 69wpm! I totally understand the trepidation. I can tell you that about 1/3 of the world is now fully dressed with art and enemies. We can also run around the whole of Hallownest in a rough form (which takes a seriously long time!) and all core gating abilities are now implemented.

We'll obviously be adding several additional areas due to the Kickstarter and there is still a lot of work to go, but the base is there and feeling good.

Thanks Sörine! Great taste in games too! Pier Solar and Shovel Knight are the raddest.

I've backed quite a number of games myself and though development has often stretched over-long, they all do seem to be coming together and looking great!

Hey Ari, any particular inspiration for the setting? Some of the creatures remind me of the toxic jungle's denizens from Miyazaki's Nausicaa film.

looks cool! if it will come out for the Wii U, I'll probably buy it. please, don't be too hard as many indie games

Just now saw this. The art direction and animations are solid. I won't be able to back this in time, but I will definitely purchase a copy from Steam.

I was going to say nothing in particular, but truth is you probably hit dead on with a primary reference! Though more maybe for some environments than for enemies.

The initial enemy reference was ancient fossils; trilobites and things like that. We've moved on a bit since then though.

Let's see:
- Godus
It was..god, I have to play it, but those reviews. To be honest, Molyneux never made clear at the start he was fully behind it because a lot of us shunned everything he touches. But he was advised as "consultant". Next time, I don't care, if Molyneux is anyhow involved I am out.
- Cyanide/Happiness Show
Getting my money's worth I feel, much better then the shorts.
- Smallworld 2
Is okay but only 1 AI difficulty is booring. Still, it's any excellent digital board game. Okay investment
- Shovel Knight
Yeah, okay, sometimes you get dealt the royal flush. Couldn't ask for more.
- Satellite Reign
Looks excellent, curious to see it shaping up.
- Darkest Dungeon
Outlook: I gave my money to the right people
- Battle Chef Brigade
Just look at it. Plus the date is "2016 or when well done" which is a good realistic estimate for once. Seriously, if you are not sure of your specifics, keep them unspecific. Fight and Cook!!

Good KS games:
- FTL: be the captain, the simulator. Loving it.
- Wasteland 2: solid entry with repeating NPC portraits that don't match? Weird armor/damage system. Otherwise very solid
- Dead State: bit buggy, bit easy, but very awesome
- Freedom Planet: if Sega really cared about Sonic maybe they'd make this
- Banner Saga: great style, gameplay, story.

A few others I am too lazy to mention

Generally, next year looks much stronger in terms of KS releases than this one.
Generally, back where you feel that you have faith in the project and team but be prepared for a loss. Mostly in terms of not being able to bring all the scope/features/polish they wanted which can quickly turn a promising project into a very sub-par realisation.

Looking forward 2015:
Darkest Dungeon, Shantae, Satellite Reign, Torment: Numenera, Hollow Knight.
Of those SR and Numenera are the unknowns because of their high goals. The rest will be great I trust.

That game looks really fantastic. Does anybody know an estimated release window?

We were initially looking at Mid-2015, but we may push back a few months to include all the additional content. We'll be pretty transparent with backers and on our website about how we're progressing, so if we hit any hitches we'll be sure to let people know.

I should note that the whole aesthetic approach to the game is built for speed! So we can create enemies, animations and environments at a pretty crazy rate.

Thanks Aostia! It probably will be a little challenging, but not frustratingly so. Think half way between Shovel Knight and Dark Souls (I realise that's a pretty wide gap!).

Hah, thanks! That just makes me want it more really. Looking forward to playing this on Wii U.

Yay!
My issue is that many indie games has GREAT styles and variety, great originality, but it seems there's a lack of beta-testing or a huge auto-reference inspiration among the hardcore fans target. I'm more a casual gamer, in terms of pick up & play behaviours, nowadays.
Btw, I don't bake projects, but I think that a developer (confirm my impression, or not!) will be happy to know that there are costumers out there ready to buy the actual copy of the game (DD only, obviously) at its market price.
Great style,, congrats, I hope you'll hit the Wii U stretch goal: I'll be there on the eshop when you'll hit it!

Hey that's great Aostia! And great to hear that you'd be keen to purchase the game. Thanks to all of our amazing backers, including all of the awesome people in this thread, we've already surpassed the Wii U goal!

Expect to see Hollow Knight in you nearest eshop in 2015!

What do you mean "if?" Did you miss the part where it hit the goal hours ago? :D

OHGOD I MISSED IT!!! Ok, day one HAHAHAH
I've read a post saying that it was near but still not greenlighted pfff
sorry guys, well, great news, now I'm happy!

Hopefully they can deliver on June 2015 at least an Early Access-like build.

We'll do our best Tizoc! It may have some areas missing, but we really want to get you guys playing the game even before then. We want to get impressions on general feel, control and exploration early so we can use that info as we detail other areas and create new enemies.

Glad to see that not only is this project successful, it managed to hit some of the stretch goals too. There's not much time left, but hopefully we can still hit another to get the 2nd character.

I know you can't make any promises, but is there a chance you could consider those stretch goals (especially the extra content & playable characters) as future DLC, or stuff like that?
Or maybe keep preorders open outside of Kickstarter?

Just wondering, because those look extremely intriguing.

Well, as it looks awesome and I've literally just got a WiiU (sitting in its as yet unopened box right next to me infact), I'll chip in now as well.

I'm so happy you managed to hit the Wii U stretch goal but it looks like the Colosseum stretch goal is out of reach :/

We're already looking into it! We'd probably look to pack a few of the stretch goals up into a single largish expansion. Team Cherry would love to do the Abyss area!

Whatever the case it would happen after the game was released and we had the time to look at additional stuff.

Woo! Wii U! Thanks all ya'll for backing. We gotta get that Colosseum in their somehow! We'll find a way. Maybe wrap that in to DLC as well ;)

Also, new areas!

Did you not just hear me say I have no money.

Now that the Wii U goal is hit, would backers be able to pick that version as their free copy when the time comes? Or is it still just limited to PC/Mac/Linux?

Yes, if you backed at $15 you can pick Wii U. It says just that right there at the top of the KS page ;)

Hell of a final day. Even with the PayPal dollars I thought it might be an outside chance at Hornet. Shame it won't be on Vita because I think it'd thrive there but I'm still very happy for how the team has done.

1 hour to go. I hope that by the time I wake up a Christmas miracle will have happened and the Colosseum stretch goal will be unlocked.

I couldn't back it on kickstarter, but you definitely have my money on the eShop when this hits!

Congrats on the campaign. I'm super happy that you reached the Hornet stretch goal.

(these new stretch goals and that third character reveal though - I want them all)

Congrats to Team Cherry!

Now you have the unenviable task of making a full game for a bunch of people with high expectations. Glad I'm not in your shoes!

Now where's my friggin Hollow Knight statue?! I feel like I've earned it.

We love a challenge! And we need people with high expectations to make sure we're delivering something truly awesome. How else would we hone Hollow Knight to razor sharp boney perfection?

Let's talk about this statue. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement ;)
