we dont even have ports of last of us and ghost of tsushima announced yet, so i highly doubt forbidden west will be on PC after only 8 months. i think a year minimum is the sweet spot but this is still sony, so even that is unlikely. its new territory for sony, so no one really knows how they will handle it.

1. We have yet to see if Xbox has the stronger lineup as we haven't seen gameplay from most of the announced titles
2. There's risk and reward at play here. By doing day and date, you're devaluing your brand for a few more million

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea
1: PC isnt stingy as PlayStation users. These high quality games you talk about, is shit. Experience is what matters. Which MS consistently delivers it. Despite shit graphic games, which they have, they still bring unique experience. Something Sony cant comprehend it.

Best example is Sea of thieves. Not ghost of tsushima graphics, but the adventures, the sailing in the seas offer experience, which you cant get it from ghost of tsuhsima.

2: That is still a shit point. XS consoles are 8m, despite day1 games already being announced. They started day1 pc long time, and still do it. Yet, they hit 8m console sold.

You arent devaluing your brand, if you put it on other stores. All it does is attract new customers. You are keeping yourself in the topic talk. The more people talk about your games, the higher your chance of them coming to your store.

I can play xbox games on pc, yet I play most of them on x1s. I even bought fifa22 for x1s, when I can buy that game for my steam.

Sorry about the shit words. I am having a shit day today and yesterday. Almost got to fatal car accident yesterday. So my mood is shit.

Oh, yeah, because traveling through feudal Japan or going through amazing nordic mythology settings aren't experiences, right? Stop fanboying. Sony offers experiences, as do Nintendo and MS. All of them excel in different experiences and that's good.
Again, stop fanboying.

Playstation will be fine people who buy consoles but consoles first off because of the price and ease of use

I do not believe this will cause massive amounts of people to stop buying PS consoles and pay PC prices to play these games.

The main target of this move, IMO, are the people who own PCs and never buy consoles, Sony wants their money.
100% correct.

Sony will lose some PS gamers to PC, but the windfall from PC gamers sticking to PC will be much bigger. So it's worth doing. A lot of PS gamers think it's smooth sailing for the average PS gamer to just sell off console gaming and switch over and buy a PC rig for a couple grand and PC game going forward. As if the 100+ million PS4 gamers waiting on the wings for a PS5 will suddenly go buy a PC with a 2000 or 3000-class GPU on a whim.

It's like for decades Apple was stubborn with their ecosystem and Motorola specs trying to be uber different. Apple loyalists loved it as it gave an image of being a rebel from Intel and PC.

Apple then launches iTunes (their biggest software innovation to go with iPods) compatible with PC, Macs get PC specs and Apple starts bragging you can finally run MS Office on a Mac. And everything zoomed up from there.

For every pissed off Apple fan loyal since Apple Lisa, they probably got 100x more sales and profits from expanding their pie. It's not like that giant pie slice was itching to buy Apple G3s and Powerbooks before. If it was so awesome, they would had already converted in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

I mean, this makes business sense. The only way to keep investors happy is to continue growing the company's revenue. Look at Apple, they also can't maintain releasing their software exclusively on the iPhone (Apple Music, Apple TV +).

This makes total sense. They don't care about your feelings, they care about $$$$$. The sooner fanboys realize that, the better.

Isnt the same for any game, which uses real location?

I am talking about the experience of things that you cant do it. Things like fishing, sailing in the sea and singing shanty songs. Things like doing quests, so that finally you own an ingame house.

These small things make the game good experience.

"exclusives" is an archaic way of doing gaming...its going to go away, I just hope it doesn't take another decade.
Every TV streaming service have exclusive content, that's how they manage to sell them. It's hard to imagine gaming becoming this complete not exclusive space. Console first then PC later on isn't exactly full exclusive, but it isn't non-exclusive either. It's not like they are releasing The Last of Us on Xbox and Switch.

PS is Sony's biggest growth driver and profit maker. They got options.

Hum along doing the usual PS console strategy hoping they can achieve targets selling games and taking digital cuts. Or branch out and add PC gaming to the mix. The division is pressured to be the growth driver. So it's PC time.

Now if PS was Sony's smallest crappiest division that historically makes no money, then nobody would really care if it just did status quo. It could hide behind the weeds. I used to work at a company where my division was ranked 4 out of 5. At town hall meetings, our division and the one beneath us didnt even get mentioned half the time by the general manager. He just cared about PRing the big 3.

PS divsion isn't even big 3. It's #1. So it's got a responsibility to keep chugging along to float the boat.

If you believe that list is accurate at all and not just place holders, I will simply point out that it says NRS has Mortal Kombat 12 and Injustice 3 releasing within 3 months of one another

PS profit are 3rd party. 1st party doesnt generate that much profit, compared to 1st party.

According to your analogy, every 3rd party is crap then. Since they put their games on all platforms.

MS is a giant, but that doesnt mean xbox being shit is ok for them. They need to show results, or else, their investors will be pissed off, since those money could be used for Azura, or other successful sectors.

Both these companies are seeing the benefits of being 3rd party publishers. Make more money from other platforms.

Sony will be massive stupid, not take the advantage of these pc players right now, especially with MS putting more money on their xbox division.

Some will undoubtedly skip buying a PS5 but predicting a ”collapse” is a bit much.

I don’t see Xbox collapsing since going day and date. They are supposedly doing better numbers than ever.
Why people are comparing MS to being able absorb losses vs Sony is beyond me. MS has 3 times the market cap as Sony. Of course MS can manage to lose hardware sales on top of spending billions on R&D on new console iterations.

We all know Sony can not afford this so once these decisions start to chomp into ps5 sales do you think Sony is just going to throw away money with releasing a new console that barely moves any units? Hell naw

As far as the people arguing with others in this thread about whether this is happening should not waste their time. The majority of these individuals on this forum are PC centric players and they want every single Sony exclusive on PC lol.

If you've managed to cop a ps5 just enjoy it while things last 🤷🏿‍♂️

As far as consoles are concerned they might as well be exclusives. Being on PC doesn't make Forza Horizon 5 available on PS5 obviously so what does it really matter for console gamers?

Agreed. Two separate decisions. First, PC or Console, second what console.

PS, to Sony, might not longer be hardware. You've already seen they create a Playstation PC division.

PS might be all about software now, just like MS approach. So yeah, clearly it's time for them to branch out and reach for audiences that don't want to buy a PS5 just to play their games. Offer some experiences on their hardware and see money being thrown at you. It's not like their games are being released on Xbox or Switch, so the PS brand still maintains its integrity.

Some people do need to understand that PS selling 120 million consoles, while good, it's simply not enough for the business to grow. They want more than 120 million. Why would any company simply be content with every gen selling the same amount of units? It's all about growth. Don't be surprised that in the future we might see a xCloud like service from Playstation on mobile (knowing Sony it will take some time, but I'm pretty sure it will eventually happen).

A market cap doesn't exist for "absorbing losses". That is essentially stockholder money. Let's not pretend stockholders are going to be willing to part with their investment for the sake of Xbox. You really think they are interested in this console war? "Hell naw"

Xbox as a product would be just as vulnerable if its sales were to tank as PlayStation would be. The real difference is Sony as a company is much more reliant on PlayStation than Microsoft is on Xbox. Thankfully, the point here is that it is even less likely that PlayStation will suffer massive sales losses as a result of PC ports than it was for Xbox. XSX and PlayStation are both in high demand and none of these PC port announcements have changed that at all.

Unlike MS, sony don't have a a storefront on PC. I can see sony eventually becomes a 3rd party dev.
There is no need to own a PlayStation

Any company can open up a storefront on PC. That's really just an app. There is just as much "need" to own a PlayStation for console gamers as there is for them to own an Xbox.

Perhaps the least surprising news ever (or leak, if not news). This is inevitable, and a good thing for us buyers. It's ridiculous that I have to buy specific hardware to play a game - I cannot believe some people support that stupid practice as if their life depends upon it. It benefits literally no one - not the consumer, or the publisher.

Consign the archaic practice to history. MS already did, Sony seems to be catching up. Only Nintendo left - and they might just be stubborn enough to not do it, to their own detriment.

Most people are EXTREMELY price sensitive for this kind of thing. Console gamers aren't going to start flocking to PCs with 1k video cards, piecemeal hardware builds, and a clunky Windows OS. These people want to push a button and have fun. PC gaming is great for those that enjoy it. For PC gamers, messing with the hardware IS part of the fun. But it's definitely not for console fans.

The idea that one set of gamers is going to "switch sides" is ridiculous, and shows a complete lack of understanding of what attracts both sides. PC gaming is not going to take over consoles, and vice versa. Which is why putting your games on PC is fine. There is a market for both, and there will continue to be a market for both.
I understand that and I still maintain my point. The landscape we know today for PC is like that but just take a look at what Valve is trying to do with the Steam Deck. Their goal is basically to give people a PC in a box — that's all that is right now but we don't really know what the future might bring. Graphics (less so now) and convenience alone won't continue to be drivers for consoles. I could be wrong and that's fine. Just thinking of how Sony or Microsoft can continue to support console hardware based ecosystem.

MS has 3 times the market cap as Sony.
Ability to absorb is only partially related to market cap, I would argue that it's more related to the investor's relationship with the senior team.

However I did want to just double check the numbers:
Microsoft 2.51 trillion USD
Sony Group: 155 billion USD

So true.

PS1 sold 100 million units alone. And that was 20 years ago by the time it ended. PS2 was 150. PS3 close to 90. PS4 120. PS5? Who knows it just started.

Gaming has grown immensely, with big game makers and console makers with digital storefronts hoarding big money now with mtx. A lot of retail store cuts are gone and shifted to console and Steam storefronts. PC retailer cuts are basically all gone.

Despite huge gaming revenue, console units for Nintendo, MS, Sony as a combined total havent budged since the PS2 days when consoles and handhelds were probably 300 million. Now someone will say Nintendo is killing two birds with one stone with Switch, but it doesn't matter. You'd think with how big gaming is globally that hardware sales should probably approach 400 or 500 million by now. But it hasnt. If the 32-bit era of PS1, Saturn, N64 and Gameboys can combine for like 200 million units that period, how can modern day not be double that? The console/handheld gamer base looks like it hasnt budged anywhere and the big gamer shift (pie slice expansion) is gamers preferring mobile or PC.

Sony has that Fate Order mobile game which drives billions in revenue alone for years so they know what's it like to expand to cellphone games.

Everyone who believes that, please tell me why Sony should release their games so early on PC?

Sony makes mush more money per sold copy on their own infrastructure compared to PC. So, they want you to buy it on console.
The amount of sold copies on PC will probably not vary in a big way, if Sony is releasing their games 1 or 2 years after the launch on PlayStation. So it literally makes no sense for them to bring their games to PC, until the sales number on consoles are very low.

That is why they only port older games or games which just not perform strongly (e.g. Days gone) to PC and this will not change in the foreseeable future, since Sony wants to sell on console since their profit is bigger there, unlike Microsoft who don't have to care where you buy their games.

You are making the assumption that PC gamers and PS5 gamers have a big overlap, that a lot of people have both. This isn't the case. Most people are PC gamers or PS5 gamers, exclusively. So it doesn't matter to release them on both. They might lose a bit of money on the PS5 side, but gain a lot more on the PC side.

I can't imagine Sony going all in on PC and not having their own store. Maybe not initially, but I feel they will need their own store to compete in the PC space.
Especially if it means getting rid of the Steam 'tax'.

Yeah, PC sale strategy is basically wiping the dregs in the scum bucket. If they had their own storefront and PSN on PC it would be a different story.

The biggest reason I want to stop investing in consoles and go all pc is the guaranteed backwards compatibility.

I have no way of knowing 100% that my ps4/5 games will play on a ps6. On PC, I am.

Simple as that.

You are missing the… get more PC gamers having also a PS5 side. That is the goal if you know you have better ROI of game sales on PS5 (hello octiny octiny is there a problem with the concept of PS5 titles and subscriptions generating more revenue indicating that one platform is acquiring users and trying to migrate them to the other ;)?)… problems is manufacturing.

The chip shortage affects consoles you are selling not computers already in the homes.

And that’s why we still have last gen next gen games
And sadly, thanks to the huge success of Sony games on pc we will never see a future title be developed that can't run on a majority of PCs.

Verny sold us a dream then the business world combined with a worldwide pandemic to a big turn on the possibility of games, atleast in the first 3 to 5 years being able to use the ps5s custom IO.

I think you will find that Sony has changed the way they design HW to guarantee BC. Look at PS4 Pro, PS5, etc… digital libraries are incredibly important and I think you are being a bit dramatic and not giving Sony their credit here.

Historically only the PS3 to PS4 transition was problematic BC wise. On PC you are guaranteed BC if either the game is big enough that MS will keep BC hacks in their code or Sony keeps updating the games, it is not magic there either… ask Apple devs and the transition to 64 bits 😂.

(oh hello again octiny octiny I have my Stan I guess :))

The most profits Sony get are from PSN+ subscription (they would lose that huge income if people move from Playstation platform to Steam), and third party royalties (physical and digital). So 120m consoles always will be better for Sony that 100 million consoles (20 moving to PC) to sell their first party games on PC.

This move is super dumb because they are not releasing their own store on PC, they are using the competence. They are not competence? so its not steam deck a portable console? what will release after steam deck from Valve or even third party vendors? Sony is trying a short-term growth at expense of the future of the brand (5-7 years in the future). This will affect PS5, but will kill a future PS6.

PC’s have the advantage of having a LOT more RAM available and SSD’s albeit slower ones on average. With a longer initial load PC’s can have a similar setup thanks to that. It is true that not all PC’s have much more than 16 GB of RAM and an SSD too.

I still think you are being a bit dramatic as true PS5 exclusives are still being made. Sony cannot possibly be selling more than they are making right now and that is the problem: their current strategy slows some extra sales on PC and PS4 (albeit it must be clear to them that PS5 drives the bulk of those sales so it is clear where gamers want to buy those new titles on I think)… pushing ALL games to be PS5 only would not make PS5 sell any faster.

So it doesn't matter to release them on both. They might lose a bit of money on the PS5 side, but gain a lot more on the PC side.
Like I mentioned I don't think the PC sales number will be so different if they sell 1 or 2 years after the playstation launch. And even if someone is a PC player, that doesn't mean he cannot buy a console. Do you think it is a coincidence that they release Horizon on PC while the sequel is already announced or also God of War. No, they hope that some PC players get into these franchises and are forced to buy a PS5 if they want to play the sequel anytime soon.

Releasing games on PC so shortly after the PC launch is a bad business idea and the main reason, why it took even so long, that Sony started to port older games to PC.

Guys, seriously, in an age where game streaming is coming faster and faster and the Cloud is going wild ... there are still people so stupidly blind that they don't want to see Is the era of consoles as we have known them coming to an end? If Sony does not hurry to make room in a platform (owned by Ms) that does have its own rules and players (Steam, Ms, Epic etc. etc.), and who will surely see others arrive in the future in force (Amazon and Google) could miss the train to lay the foundations for a business without suffering from false starts, since the competition has been waging war for a few years. The slowdown of the chip production made it clear how much generational changes and the abandonment of old platforms (for example from PS3 to PS4 or PS4 to PS5) with exclusives games it is unsustainable today and fundamentally a wrong model. It could have worked in the past when the production time of games and their development cost were half (or less) and therefore the investment risk could have made sense today unfortunately the limit of this model is immediately apparent. Sony knows that for instance Demon Souls remake sold little and did it because there are too few PS5 consoles out there, and even if there was no chip shortage it would have sold infinitely more if released on PC + Console. Here we talking of millions of dollars of difference in a world, that of consoles, where manufacturers have a physical limit in producing a number of hardware that will be every gen more or less always the same (due to production limits, sales timing and generation duration).
All this without counting the other problems brought by the competition, it could happen that you do not have the best performing hardware (as happened this gen to Sony and the last to Microsoft) or that the competition takes 3rd party exclusives leaving you in a bitter mouth. In short, people would do better to wake up and abandon the old mentality because these people will anyway left in the past. Sony's way is evident at this point

Stop trying to draw figures and models that don't make sense and practically only bring less money It's all very simple Pana. Sony will release the games on PC. period .Soon will do it on day one too. period. ...And I am convinced that when it happens everyone will hurry to say in their defense "but it was clear we all expected it". It will obviously continue to produce home consoles in the meantime (at least up to PS6)
