How Are People You Know In Real Life Responding To Xbox One?

I actually made an oral presentation last friday about my opinion on audio/video medias distributed physically vs. digitally. The contracts we sign every time we update our systems or the moment we unwrap a game or a system and our consumer rights that progressively shrinks with every year passing.

Then I started talking about Microsoft wanting to take a bigger part of the cake than what they deserve, wanting to sell physical goods but actually acting as if it was digital and then started enumerating all the restrictions and security measures they applied for the Xbone.

Many people didn't know about all of this, a few bro-dudes were looking at me dead straight with no damn expression on their face, I was thinking ''Damn, I must be pissing them off because I'm bashing their brand or whatever.'' but then when I finished they started asking me ''Are they really doing this?'' and then one of them said ''Damn, they're shooting themselves in the foot, they're fucking dead! Everybody that knows this will go with the PS4''. I chuckled and went back to my place, happy I informed people.

I passed too. :)

EDIT: Many of my friends who were basically 360 this gen are jumping the boat with PS4 for next-gen as well. This is not looking good for MS at all.

I am a substitute teacher. my entire class only cared about the next COD, and they didn't care about the used games/online only because they were only going to buy the new madden/COD.

in fact, some of them boasted that they had already saved up money for the season pass. their math scores shows an interesting correlation to this.

They don't like it.

I don't think I know a single person that isn't appalled by it. (Out of about 25 people, this includes about 11 non-serious gamers)

I also just had a conversation randomly with my friends and half the employees of the Foot Locker in Mall of America 2 days ago and they all don't like it either.

My co-worker is in denial. He said all that stuff was rumored. Then when it was confirmed he ignored it. I don't bother telling him any more because its no use. He seems to be an Xbox fanboy despite only playing games like COD and sports titles. He already pre-ordered Xbox One and Ryse.

My nephew, who's 16, doesn't like the Xbone. Neither do all of his friends. They play Black Ops II daily, on 360. They are all getting PS4's.

They are a demographic that would have stuck with Xbox, but MS fucked themselves over.

Of my two friends that game and I hang with consistently. 1 is more hardcore but doesn't play much. Getting a good network connection at his house is tough so between the check in and DRM he's not getting Xone. Not sure he would have anyways.

The other guy is more casual, plays sports games, and random other stuff. He doesn't generally connect his console to the net. Told him about Xone online requirements and his response was something like "that sounds kinda stupid. Is the next Playstation doing that?" And then I told him it wasn't. So if he gets a next gen system it'll probably be PS4.

Even if some of the hardcore faithful are staying in the LIVE ecosystem, it's plain to see not all are, and this breaks the hold LIVE had on people since it's no longer going to be "the place where all my friends are"

Anecdotally: just spreading the facts to friends on FB I've opened most eyes. I only have one hold out who is buying an xbone for the first party stuff. He admits it's a terrible choice, but he's "addicted" to Halo. I told him wait until you see how many friends aren't there anymore. ;)

I've been shocked by how my friends have all sided with PS4, and preordered immediately at amazon. Not one of them used PS3 as their primary consoles - they were PC and 360 mostly.

The combination of the hardware power and price, and seeing so many must have games at E3 meant that its day one for them.

I've talked to every one of my friends about E3 as well as random people at gamestop, a few people I saw at Walmart when I went to get TLoU at midnight, some people at a party last night, and anyone else I know or suspect to be interested in games.

I have met one person who said they will be getting an XBone. Every other person is getting a PS4 with a few getting neither. More than half of these people only owned a 360 last gen.

Of the 4 people I talked to, 3 of them are going with PS4 and one is going with the Xbone. Most of them think the restrictions on the Xbone are stupid. The one guy who's getting the Xbone is a Halo/CoD fan which is why he's getting it.

My friend says he isnt fond of how it requires kinect and there isnt anything he is too interested in at the moment. He is a huge 360 fan btw. He's aware of the DRM stuff and doesnt like that either.

All of my friends that have any knowledge on video games pretty much says that Xbox One is horseshit. There are a few major Xbox fanboys I know and they are defending the console at all cost even though they look like morons with their paper thin arguments in favor of it. (someone tried to tell me that cloud computing would make Xbone more powerful than PS4 and that all the best games will be Xbone exclusive because publishers are pissed at Sony about no DRM)

My brother, who plays CoD all day on his 360, thinks it looks terrible. "Killer Instinct looked cool; too bad it's on the Shitbox, lol"

He's a younger brother, you see

Let's get some more stories about being unpaid shills for Sony. I'm finding these fascinating.

In other news, my friends who tend to game on consoles the most have mostly expressed feelings of ambivalence for next gen. One says that the majority of his current gen games had PC ports so he's thinking of just going PC. Another one said he's thinking of going Wii U only for some reason or another (I'm the only person in my group of friends who owns a Wii U and while we all like NintendoLand, I've never recommended that anyone buy one at this time).

Microsoft should be horrified of all the negative reaction due to Kinnect.

Personally that never bothered me (it was the 24 hour online check the dealbreaker, I want zero of that for offline games EVER - and even if they reverse course, they have revealed their true future intentions)

Kinnect seems to have seeped into mainstream media like the lewis black thing.

Its funny, due to the success of dance games, I thought kinnect 2 would be a big competitive advantage and worth the increased system price. Seems to have backfired horribly for microsoft

And now I think about it my wife also would veto over Kinnect. She hates skype because she has to "do her hair" etc versus phone call lol mute point as I am switching to ps4, primarily a 360 gamer current gen wise

Well, so far I've had one case of denial, "No no, I just can't believe Microsoft would do that!"

And two cases of, "Oh those greedy jerks! No way am I buying that piece of crap!"

Whats REALLY interesting actually, has been some of the reactions by non-gamers that've overheard all this while I was talking to gamers. Most of them either got this consternated expression, or asked for clarification and shook their heads when they realized they hadn't heard me wrong.

I think, this is because anybody whom regularly buys, books, CD's, and Blu-Rays, simply cannot wrap their head around a company trying to prevent them from reselling their purchases. Sure, they've been doing this on the PC side forever, but PC gaming has never been quite as mass market as console gaming. Even during the early 00's, when retail side PC gaming was fairly vibrant, places like Target regularly devoted less than half the shell space to PC games, in comparison to consoles.

(I worked at a Target at the time, and kept close tabs on that department, since I had an employee discount. This is also how I managed to snag a PS2, right in the middle of that shortage that was frustrating everyone.)

I guess my point is, that non-gamers don't seem to like this DRM much, and chances are many if not most will probably hear about it eventually. So between that and the price, if any of them decide to get their children a console, it'll probably either be the Wii U or the PS4.

At my school everyone has an xbox 360 and uses live to play cod and sports titles with one another.

However, after this disaster everyone i've talked to is getting a ps4 now. People can't believe how many things sony is doing right and microsoft is doing wrong.

Also showing them gameplay footage of Infamous Second Son doesn't hurt either ;).

Of the 4 non-gamer friends I've talked to about it, 2 had heard that the PS4 was going to be more powerful and better. After I explained the major differences in the consoles and services, they fully agreed PS4 was the way to go. The other 2 were also heavily in the PS4 camp after hearing what Microsoft was doing on their end.

I work for a electronic retail store that sells video games in us called tiger direct and we all keep talking about how we're all are not getting the xbox and how were excited about the ps4.

Everyone I know thinks it's the most rediculous thing they've ever heard of.

My middle brother who is a die-hard Xbox fanboy is buying a PS4.

My littlest brother who has only ever owned Xbox consoles is getting a PS4.

My dad who cares NOTHING about video games said to me the other day "Have you heard about this Xbox One? What kind of dummy came up with that?"

4/5 of my regular 360 gaming friends are going to the PS4, the other one is getting the One in hopes that they will make another Gears of War game.

These weren't people that I know, but I was going for a walk with a friend yesterday and we passed by this group of about 10 kids who were all <16 or so. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but I heard "... Yeah, and you can't even play offline for more than a day, how messed up is that?" followed by a lot groaning and general muttering. They then groaned about the extra $100, and how it'd be harder to get games used.

I was pretty taken aback because these guys were pretty young, and I had no idea that the general public was also so negative towards the XBone.

Not IRL friends, but I'd say that more than 70% of HaloGAF are going PS4 next gen. Halo 4 being such a mess killed off a lot of my interest, and knowing the franchise will continue on a console I don't want to support killed off the rest of it.

Let's see. I've only had a couple of talks with people I know, but here we go.

1.) One guy has already preordered it. He's not a hardcore gamer, just your regular COD-bro. He's pretty excited about all the non-game features too (cable, etc).

2.) Several other people are ditching MS for PS4. They don't like the price or the used-games fiasco.

3.) One other guy was more interested in PS4, but said he'll probably get both.

Most of the folks I know are handling X1 with derision. They feel insulted as consumers and in general their conversations on it go from laughing at it, to angry at it, to disgusted with it in that order.

Can you really expect much else? We all had hoped X1 was going to just be a beefed up version of all the good things we enjoyed about the 360...instead its one giant anticonsumer list of nightmarish policies.

Whaaaa, well I understand with Halo 4 pushing people away more so than Xbone.

I told them about the price differences and that's really all it took, used games were just a bonus. Truth be told I know alot of 360 gamers and they are mostly big bad bro gamers so things like Killer instinct still won a few over.

A dudebro on Facebook:

I'm a huge Xbox fan, loved it since I got the original Xbox. But.... I am no longer going to be apart of the Microsoft family. This always online shit and 24 hour check in, along with no used games plus the price of the box, has made me convert to Sony. Halo... I will miss you the most. Goodbye.

The Sony fanboy is buying the PS4 just because it's the new Playstation. The other three were Xbox only this gen, but due to M$ business practices this gen and the Xbone's DRM policy and always online they will either sit this gen out or buy a PS4.

I was really surprised that my friends were asking me about Sony's used game video. We rarely talk video games, yet they saw this video.

Always stayed loyal to the PlayStation, and I'm glad that I by the looks of it will never have to jump ship. Talked with and IRL friend about the MS fiasco, and we both agree that MS is out of touch with reality. Connectivity isn't really up to par throughout the world as Microsoft would like to believe, and the DRM and used games policy are truly appaling. A friend of a friend's a MS fanboy, owing a Xbox 360, but he'll be jumping ship for next gen.

I have a circle of 6 gamer friends, all of them previous 360 owners, 5 of them getting a ps4, and the one getting an xbone is getting mocked for being so stubborn and "bending over" lol

Most of my friends are really dissapointed, sad actually, by now most of them have resigned to get a PS4. I and my gamers friend are from the small group of people who prefered the 360 on the PS3 dominant market of Perù.
For my non gamer friends, they never even considered to get a 360 since it is basically no promoted here.

Mostly ambivalence. Three out of three of my gamer friends have no intention of switching from Xbox.

Most people I've talked to in work don't really know about DRM and just want to know if it'll have Halo and CoD etc.

I'm personally still on the fence, I love Microsoft's game lineup but price is completely exorbitant. I may just sit out til a price drop because I have fairly capable PC anyway.

EDIT: Should point out, I did know a guy tempted to make the switch, but he say with months to go and gamescom/tgs that it's too early to make decision.

I'm the only hardcore gamer at my work place but it seems everyone has heard about the direction Microsoft is taking the Xbone. All casuals I know are planning to go with a PS4 but not at launch.

It's the price that's put off more people, in my experience. It's just more than most people want to pay for a console, particularly when there's something similar for less money.

Two of my Xbox-only last gen (but PS2 before that) friends are getting the PS4 and we pretty much set from the PS4 reveal anyway. It helped that I showed them some of the PS exclusives they've been missing out on.

One - an Xbox fanboy - was saying 'Xbox One is a lot better, we haven't seen enough from the PS4 yet' (huh?) after the Xbone reveal but after E3 he's decided on PS4 due to price.

Another friend actually removed me on Facebook after E3 lol. He's always been an Xbox fanboy and after Microsoft's conference he was annoyed at the price but he was like 'The PS4 HAS to be more expensive, it'd make no sense for it to be cheaper'. So when the PS4 was revealed as being cheaper I said 'What was that about the price?' and he just removed me, lol.

There are 2 people at work I talked to about it. Both were kind of casual gamers compared to the people on gaf, and both were Xbox 360 last gen and had no interest in PS3. They are the kind of guys that play CoD, one told me it was the only series he buys new day 1. But both say they are getting PS4s and their friends are too. They seem to be pretty disappointed by the fact you can't sell/buy games off craigslist and such, and the price difference is a significant factor too.

Someone said to someone I know, the Xbox One is better because it dearer. Safe to say I'm not gonna be speaking to him for a while.

My brother, who only buys FIFA and maybe NHL every year, responded with "fuck Microsoft" when I told him how Xbone works. He's going for PS4 if any now.

Out of the few dozen people I know who own or have owned a 360, not a single one of them is planning on getting an Xbone. Microsoft have badly misjudged peoples tolerance of their policies.

My son took me to breakfast for fathers day this morning. He owns a 360 and LOVES it, but he plans on waiting at least a year after release to see how things flesh out.

1) Whatever the next Gears or Halo game is, I'm sure they are coming out on the 360.
2) He knows I'm getting a PS4, so he'll get to play Destiny, Killzone or NBA 2k on that
3) If TitanFall ends up being the shit he can play it on my PC.

Word of mouth...everyone I know that games I'm telling to back SONY next go round.
