If you are outgoing, take the side of 'social justice' and engage with all the opportunities that present themselves and also have big titles in your portfolio (no matter if they qualify as 'good' or not, there just has to be money involved), things will just kinda fall your way.
A shitshow of a game can be blamed on managers rather than individual skill, so even if MEA for example is known to be pretty shitty, the mere fact of having worked on it will earn you a good amount of recognition. Stack that 3 times, add the fact that people don't necessarily know everything about all applicants, a sprinkle of nepotism/connections.. that's all it takes. Although this only works in fields that aren't quite verifiable. Producing, game design, writing, those are all fields where HR can't easily verify skill: track record tells you the most and even that is hardly verifiable.
