How do you feel about city smoking bans?

My city just passed one. All bars, restaurants, and private clubs can no longer allow smoking. Only 1 business is exempt - the local casino and the only reason they got an exemption is because they provide about $5 million in tax revenue a year to the city.

I'm not a smoker. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke. My nose is so sensitive to it, that I can tell if the car in front of me in traffic has someone smoking in it and I have to click the button the recirculates air inside of my vehicle instead of bringing fresh air in from the outside.

With that said, I find smoking bans forced onto businesses by the government to be the ultimate in hypocrisy.

You allow people to go into bars, restaurants, and clubs, and consume a product - alcohol, that can fuck up and end innocent people's lives hours after consuming it, but you can't allow smoking. The act of people smoking cigarettes typically doesn't start bar fights, cause property damage, or cause someone to hit someone head on in a vehicle.

Yeah and they can go to jail for these things. So much like smoking in a bar it's, not advisable.

I support the smoking bans. It's pretty offensive to go to bar/club and leave smelling like an ashtray.

Love it, no smoking indoors has been in effect here for a while. Would never want it to go back as it was prior to that.

The push is because of data that shows no second hand smoke is okay. It puts you at risk for cancer, asthma. Even the smell on your clothes can trigger an asthma event in a kid. Smokers should realize that.

It's not hypocrisy when seen from that viewpoint. The alcohol you drink will not get me drunk. Just the roophies. lol

And the government does protect people when that alcohol consumption puts the public in danger (ie 2am closing, drunk driving laws, encouraging services that provide cab rides to people who are drunk).

I don't smoke so I'm very happy about it. Delirious in fact.

And I couldn't give a fuck how it effects smokers or how they feel about it.

Good.

When I was a kid and me and my parents went into pubs we'd be shepherded into the corner of the pub which would be the 'non-smoking area'. After the smoking ban me and my parents ate out way more at pubs.

I'm not breathing in your alcohol

I am actually okay with it, at least when it comes to restaurants. I have asthma so cigarette smoke and I don't get along too well. It's nice to be able to sit down and not have smoke moving my way as I am trying to eat.

I don't really go into bars often, if at all. When I used to go in, I hated coming home smelling like an ashtray. However, it was such an isolated thing for me to do that I wouldn't have a problem if it were a one off thing and bars continued to allowed smoking in them.

So, yay for restaurant bans. Bars are iffy. I, for one, couldn't care less.

Licensees should have been given the choice, rather than a blanket ban.

Nice to see this subject gets the usual rational approach.

i support it. been going to bars for 4 years now, and theres been a smoking ban in place for like... 10? anyways im ridiculously happy that those numbers arent reversed.

smokers ruin public areas for non-smokers, its a fact.. nothing wrong with his opinion imo

If we are going to use the alcohol logic in the OP we should probably ban beans too. They may induce flatulence. Actually any high fiber foods should be banned.

This. Also, one glass of wine is not detrimental to health. One single cigarette is.

Pro-ban.

Even when I was a smoker I agreed with it. I mean maybe I would miss it at bars and places like that, but at restaurants, etc? I don't want to smell your Pall Mall while I'm eating my steak.

I think they're great. I like being able to go places without being subjected to smoke.

I think it's a reasonable compromise that a bar can allow a smoking area if it's a separate closed-off room, but the whole smoking section/non-smoking section in the same room thing just doesn't work. The smoke is gonna drift over to the non-smokers.

When I wind up in a city or state that doesn't have that ban, and I have to deal with smoke while I'm trying to have a nice meal, I feel like I've traveled back in time to a less civilized era.

So you propose we also get a public alcohol ban. I agree. Because going back and allowing public smoking, would be foolish. It is a major health concern and shouldn't be allowed. It would be even better to make it completely illegal although I can understand why that isn't done.

we've had smoking bans for years where i live. you cant smoke anywhere inside unless it's your house or car(although you cant smoke with kids in the car).

a handful of chain smokers bitched when the change came but a vast majority either didnt care or were happy it happened.

imo the less i have to be around smokers the better. people that smoke smell and taste like shit.

I grew up among smokers. We used to fly on airplanes where you could be seated in the non-smoking section and be one row in back of the smoking section. I had a ton of ear infections and strep throats as a child -- and I'd like to think otherwise, but I'm pretty sure inhaling a lot of second-hand smoke either caused or exacerbated the problems.

I'm really glad for the bans. And I can accept the hypocritical notion that I am for freedom of choice but also for the right to enjoy food in a smoke-free environment.

I have zero problem with it at a city level. If people don't like it, it doesn't take much to get things changed but smoking bans tend to be one of those things that most people are in favor of.

And there are plenty of cities and counties in the US that are dry and don't allow alcohol sales. There's nothing stopping you from getting that kind of law passed in your town if you can convince the majority it's a good idea.

Bump that, it's putting my life at risk. I support a blanket national ban in public places. Some hospitals, they don't even want you near the door. You have to be a certain amount of distance from the building. It's telling that the aroma stays in the air outside. There is a reason the cancer rate is high; we allow chemicals (all chemicals) to bombard us constantly.
National ban would be bullshit. If people in a city want to let you smoke anywhere, that's up to them. If they don't want you smoking, also up to them. The great thing is that you can go live in a city that fits your personal criteria if it's that important to you. If it's not that important to you, then just go along with what everyone else wants to do.

What parent takes their kid to a casino, dance club, tavern, or titty bar? In my state, kids aren't even allowed in those places, although I know some states are different and will allow kids into bars as long as they're accompanied by a parent.

I can see maybe a ban in restaurants. The big hypocrisy for me, at least in my city, was allowing the casino an exemption because of the tax revenue they provide. That's a slap in the face to every small business owner in the city. If the city valued people's health over tax revenue, the casino wouldn't have received an exemption.

It's amazing. Nothing worse then going out and coming home smelling like stale smoke. I always had to put my clothes out in the garage since they smelled disgusting.

I support them. Don't need to be sucking up your cancer, just because you are craving a cig.

Even as a smoker I can live with it. But imo the best solution would be for bar owners to decide if you are allowed to smoke or not. But whatever it has one great advantage: I smoke less when I'm out drinking, so the hangover on the next day isn't so severe like before the ban :D

Well, I'm all for screwing casinos. They generate a lot of revenue but it's off the backs of people. BTW, I was referring to people who smoke in the home or even outside the house. Ever smell your clothes days later after being in a bar? Kids can be exposed no matter where they are. And I wouldn't feel so bad if cigarettes were not addicting but the tobacco companies are full of crap. They hook you and keep selling it to ya for profits. To the detriment of everyone around you.

So, casinos or tabacco companies? Can both die in a fire and we'll inhale their screams.

Good. The less second hand smoke people breath the better. I actually hold my breat every time I'm near a smoker. No smoke gets into my lungs!

I love it, I get to go home smelling like myself instead of smelling like a smoker.

that shit goes everywhere, the worst is when cigaret smoke gets stuck on a girl's skin or hair, that is such an erection remover

+ it encourages non-smokers to go out without fear of stinking

yeah, I love that restaurants no longer have a smoking section to deal with here in Montreal.

I know that's selfish but I don't really give a crap. the second hand smoke I would frequently get sitting across the aisle from a smoking section would drive me bonkers.

BS detector is tingling.

Anyway, as a smoker I don't mind at all having to go out for a smoke. It's actually better. Well most of the time. Here it sucks because of the constant shitty weather.

Love them. We got one like 2 months ago, but no one followed it and no one enforced it. Fuck Alabama.

Actually, I can do that when a smoker is in a car in front of me. Granted, I have a very sensitive nose, and I'm allergic to smoke. It causes my throat to swell a little bit and eyes to get itchy and watery.

Not to mention the poor wait staff that has to inhale all that crap in the course of doing their job...

Thumbs up to public smoking bans.
