How would you end The Simpsons?

How would you end The Simpsons? After 10 seasons of near sitcom comedic perfection, some of the greatest comedy tv bits ever, and then its been a steady down hill slope from there. No the show isn't horrible and unwatchable now, but its so soulless and cynical compared to S1-10, its just awful.

So, how would you end it, what would be an appropriate send off? It's well known they did plan to end it on a christmas episode like how it started, or one of those episodes set in the future (I think)

I'd personally go for another film, either a christmas one or the kamp krusty one like they originally planned for the film (the new kamp krusty episode in the new seasons is awful as well) and just let it play out.

I don't think it's possible, at this point the show is continuing itself. I'm pretty sure it's self aware by now.

*Cut to Kang and Kodos8

Kang: Ok I think we've collected enough data from these helpless humans

Kodos: Begin phase 2: world domination!

Kang/Kodos: *Evil laughter, dying slowly, and then to a stop*

Kang: Or we can just go get some galactic ice cream

Kodos: Sounds good to me!

Modern day Simpsons is always about grasping for attention as much as possible. It'll either be a massive nostalgia trip referencing as much of the previous stories and characters as possible, or it'll be the most depressing possible thing it could be and end on an incredibly low note. Both of those would grab ratings like nothing else.

I'd set the first episode of the season in 1989, and each successive episode would progress a year in their lives, with all the changes it brings, until it's the current year, and that would be the final episode.

I think the best way to end it would to do a Christmas episode in the future. The family all meet up for Xmas and remember past glories. So we get to see where they've been and where they are now. I think I may cry if done well. Could hit me right in the member berries.

Santa's Little Helper gets sick and Bart has to take him to the vet and put him to sleep.

It's an analogy for the show getting too old and needing to die.

It's not great. Retcons the original, incidentally.

Okay, I googled it. Literally even the very first line from the Wiki summary has me curious:

The story is set right after the events of "Kamp Krusty."

We've had this thread before I'm sure and I can't remember the source but someone posted a fucking genius conceit where it ties into the intro and them all rushing home. It was genuinely very emotional

In a bar currently, someone must remember it

Have the episode start off like any other episode, but have very poor quality animation. If you've seen the original animation for Some Enchanted Evening, like that, but less stable. The first act is fairly normal, but the way the characters act is a little off. Homer seems angrier, Marge seems depressed, Lisa seems anxious, Bart seems to have genuine anger and hate for his parents.

This episode is about the Simpsons going on a plane trip, near the end of the first act, the plane starts taking off. Bart is fooling around, as you'd expect. However, as the plane is about 50 feet off the ground, Bart breaks a window on the plane and gets sucked out.

Act one ends with the shot of Bart's corpse. When act two starts, Homer, Marge, and Lisa are sitting at their table, crying. The crying goes on and on, it gets more pained, and sounds more realistic, better acting than you would think possible. The animation starts to decay even more as they cried, and you can hear murmuring in the background. The characters can barely be made out, they were stretching and blurring, they looked like deformed shadows with random bright colors thrown on them.

There are faces looking in the window, flashing in and out so you were never sure what they looked like.

This crying goes on for all of act two.

Act three opens with a title card saying one year had passed. Homer, Marge, and Lisa are skeletally thin, and still sitting at the table. There is no sign of Maggie or the pets.

They decide to visit Bart's grave. Springfield is completely deserted, and as they walk to the cemetery the houses became more and more decrepit. They all looked abandoned. When they get to the grave, Bart's body is just lying in front of his tombstone, looking just like it did at the end of act one.

The family starts crying again. Eventually they stop, and just stare at Bart's body. The camera zooms in on Homer's face.

The view zooms out as the episode came to a close. The tombstones in the background had the names of every Simpsons guest star on them. For guests who have died, like Michael Jackson and George Harrison, the dates were when they would die. The credits are completely silent, and seemed handwritten. The final image is the Simpson family on their couch, like in the intros, but all drawn in hyper realistic, lifeless style of Bart's corpse.

This one:

"The show begins with the family watching Itchy and Scratchy. They announce that the show is coming to an end and the entire family gasps in horror. They then announce that the last episode will be aired in a years time, and until then, a contest will be running; this contest will offer the winner the chance to write what will happen in the finale. The entire Simpson family applies. Krusty is in charge of choosing the winner. He falls in love with one of the Simpson's idea and puts it in winners box. He makes a mistake though, he puts all five of their ideas in the box by accident. He goes on his show to announce the winner and pulls out five cards out of the box. Stumped, he reads all five names out, "Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie." Flash forward a year later and Bart is in class describing his take on the Itchy and Scratchy finale to Milhouse, while showing us Itchy and Scratchy with Bart's voice-over. He finishes and the class is silent, Edna Krabappel is staring at him and says, "After-school detention." The scene then cuts to the power plant and Homer is describing his finale to Lenny and Carl. He finishes, a bell rings and he gets in a radiation suit. The scene cuts to a supermarket and Marge is describing her take to Helen Lovejoy, she finishes and strolls Maggie in the trolley to another aisle. Here, Maggie sees the unibrow baby and starts describing her take via waving and motioning. She finishes and the scene cuts to Lisa, she begins describing her take to Sherri and Terri. She finishes and picks up her saxophone to go to music practice. She walks in the music room sits down and then sees the time. She realises the show is going to be on in ten minutes. She plays the Itchy and Scratchy melody on her sax and bolts out. It cuts to Bart, he's writing on the black board: "I will not talk in class ever again" he hears a bell, realises the time and runs out. Cut to Homer holding some plutonium at a conveyor belt when a bell rings at the plant and he too realises the time and runs off, dropping some plutonium. Cut to the supermarket and we see Marge and Maggie checking out and running through the exit doors. Cut to a birds eye view of their home and we see everyone rushing to take a seat in the couch. They look at each other, they smile, the Itchy and Scratchy music plays, and it cuts to credits."

End it with a crazy last season multi episode story arc that ends ambiguously with the final shot with something akin to a perpetually spinning top, parodying Inception.

Just rerun a slightly edited version Barthood that removes the awkward dated "future" jokes.

It would end mid-season with several episodes not yet aired and no sense of closure. There would be no announcement.

"Holidays of Future Passed" from Season 23 was intended to be this, since it was the last episode produced before the cast went on strike and it looked like the show was doomed.

It's actually a fantastic episode....that they pretty much ruined by doing a sequel.

A season worth of them aging. Kids growing, Pet's dying, grandpa dying, Homer and Marge getting old. Final episode is scrapbook like of old Homer and Marge looking back at their lives.

Homer gets his dream job as head of quality control at the Duff Brewery's new plant in Springfield (a different one).

Before moving away, they have a going away party to say goodbye to everyone in town.

-Bart pulls Homer aside and tells him he knows he hasn't been the best son, but he promises to make a new start in (new) Springfield. Homer tells him he's proud of him no matter what and that he'll do the same as his dad. They embrace.

-Lisa tells Milhouse once and for all that she'll never like him in that way. Milhouse says he understands, but tells her that he only liked her because of how intelligent, beautiful and talented she is. He wishes her the best and hopes she finds someone worthy of her heart, while giving her a present: The sheet music to "Moon Dreams" off the album "Birth of the Cool" by Miles Davis. Lisa, in tears, kisses him on the cheek and thanks him for his kind words.

-Patty and Selma confront Marge and tell her moving away would be the biggest mistake of her life next to marrying Homer. Marge tells them off saying that while Homer may not be perfect, he's her soulmate. They proceed to rattle off a bunch of stupid/horrible things he's done, which Marge counters with her own list of good things, which she admits is "a little front-loaded." She ends the conversation by saying she'd rather make a mistake and be happy than be right and miserable.

The party ends. House is a mess. Moving boxes everywhere. The power goes out after Barney hits a transformer backing out of their driveway. Marge lights candles while Homer pulls out a portable radio...which starts playing "Close To You" by The Carpenters. They slow dance as the camera pulls out and shows Springfield at night, stars twinkling.

I commented on this last time. This is so good, that they're not going to do it or something similar.
