Ok, this is the situation:

I hate Chris Martin and Coldplay, but then I listened to their hit-single "Talk" and I liked it pretty much because of this catchy guitar-riff.

Now I found out that they are just DIRTY THIEVES!!

Because today I listened through some stuff of the German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. Among other things I listened to their song "Computer Liebe" from the record "Computerwelt" from 1981. And I suddenly recognized the tune they played:

Now I can stop liking Coldplay and hate them again for being thieves and making shitty whiny music.

Welcome to 2.5 years ago or so. :p It was pretty common knowledge they sampled Kraftwerk on Talk.

I'm seeing Klaxons in a few weeks btw.. SHITDISCO supporting.

In my eyes they are thieves. Or at least they have disfigured it. :(

Then you may need to recheck your definition of stealing. If they got permission for it, then its completely fair game. Its not their fault that you didn't know that they were sampling the song, and its kinda unfair to hate them for respecting other artists.

They not only got permission to use it, they credited the members of Kraftwerk as co-writers of the song.

Liner notes FTW.

I kinda like Coldplay. I don't own any of their albums, but the songs I've seen on TV or heard on radio aren't bad. Don't know why so many people seem to hate them.

This is standard-issue musical elitist reply. It's even used on entire genres of music (all rap sounds the same!!1!!). Every artist/band has a style/sound, so in a sense, all the bands out there have music that sounds the same. If you hate the band, you can just use that against them.

Maybe the "thieves"-thing?

The thing is that I was wondering why such a shitty band has such a catchy tune. Now I know where they got it from.

Cool. I like them though, and I had no idea about the bands apparent "reputation" on these boards. So I thought you were serious. I've seen someone seriously claim this before. But yeah, whatever.

COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN was inspired by German 1970s electronic pioneers KRAFTWERK when he composed the band's new album X+Y.

The YELLOW singer confesses he is hooked on the legend's unique melodies - and new track TALK even includes a Kraftwerk sample.

Martin says, "To begin with, they were a band I didn't quite get. Then suddenly one day it clicked and it was the best music I'd ever heard. They've totally influenced us on this record.

"I think if we're going to do anything after X+Y we're going to have to retreat behind a mask. I love the idea that they're Kraftwerk but nobody really knows who they are. They're like the original GORILLAZ. Or the electronic BEATLES."

COLDPLAY frontman CHRIS MARTIN was so desperate to use a riff by German rockers KRAFTWERK - he wrote them a pleading letter in childish German.

The YELLOW singer recently admitted he was hooked on the electronic band's melodies, and that his new single TALK includes a Kraftwerk sample.

But he was only able to obtain the riff by writing to frontman RALF HUTTER and begging him to let Coldplay use it.

He admits, "The only thing I could think of was the pen pal letters I learnt in German lessons at school. I had no idea if they knew who Coldplay were so had to explain myself like a 15 year-old school-boy.

"Dear Ralf, I sing in a band called Coldplay, blah, blah. I drew a little picture. Everyone says it's extraordinary that they said yes.'

You have to realize, that everything Chris Martin says, he says jokingly. I've never seen him take himself seriously in an interview.

I think in this context it's not funny at all. Joke or not.

Fair enough, he's not a comedian. In terms of an arena rock frontman, I'd say he's doing pretty well though. I thought he was funny in Extras and in the other stuff he's done with Ricky Gervais.

Is it the "Scientist" where the guy wails for a little bit, because I hate that, not only because it's a bit grating, but also because of one time I went to a lan party, a guy grabbed the guitar and did that for what felt like an hour. I've never hated a person more.

D'oh, i thought it was a new album or single on the way etc. Screw you 2005.

...but yeah, X&Y is worse than AROBTTH which is worse than Parachutes. I still like them despite people trying to put that to shame.

It's as much stealing as Radiohead's "Idiotque" is (the main hook/rift/whatever is a sample from what I believe is the very first electronic song ever made.)

But yeah, some Rush of Blood's songs needed better obedience and X&Y sounded like they wanted to do something special but jumped out halfway because they were afraid of pissing off their fans. And overall the songwriting begs for improvement.

I do try to follow their albums because Chris Martin is interesting. He is an unlucky git who ran out of ideas since Parachutes and somehow managed to become one of the world's most popular bands. While Chris Martin has this "nice happy guy" attitude to him he is aware of his (lack of?) creativity/talent and is very pessimistic and worried towards it: Chris had absolutely no idea what to write in A Rush of Blood and at the end of making it he thought the songs were amateurish and swore that the album was going to bury their band. For X&Y, well, I'll just put in the quote he said a week before it's release:
Chris Martin said:
"You're fucked. I knew we should have stopped. Or someone should have shot me. I think that's the best thing that could have happened to us, if someone shot me in the head. Death is guaranteed to make your last work seem good, you know?"
But Rush of Blood became their "Landmark" album that turned them into U2 status, and X&Y ended up selling millions. All the while when critics and music fans are shitting on it.

Millions love him and yet the very artists that inspired him to be a musician hates his guts, and fans all over claim Coldplay's albums are some of the best and yet vast armies of critics bash his work to no end and he knows it. Heck, at some award show when they won an award for "Best British Band" for X&Y he said "People are fed up with us and so are we." and said how he wanted to disappear for many years.

So yeah, it's soccer dad music, but deep inside me I try to cheer for them to make something with real actual quality and merit. Their 4th album actually looks pretty optimistic because Brian Eno is now working with them as a producer and collaborator, and from what they talked about he is making a big difference with how they were organized before and how they use to handle their music. The next album is now a short 42 minutes of the music they made, avoiding the fatness that plagued a lot of their music before.

And with this post, I have lost all musical credibility.

For what it's worth, I still think Parachutes is a good album, and A Rush Of Blood To The Head had its moments. X & Y was awful, but I still have hope that they can create something great in the future.
