I am 22, and I have never had an alcoholic beverage.

I accidentally had a sip of my uncle's beer as a kid, but I otherwise have never had an alcoholic beverage.

I don't feel like I need to drink. My father's side of the family has had a bad history with alcohol.

I might want to drink on occasion, but I am concerned about its health effects. I also do not want to have a negative emotional reaction.

Am I weird?

You are thinking too much. Just get a can of beer or something. Nothing will happen to you, nor is it a bad thing.

I'm an anti-social dude, so I figure if I start drinking it would be a sad thing indeed.

Not at all. I made the decision very young to just not take any part in it since I knew of some troubling family history. I am also 22.

Considering alcohol got my brother frostbite last year I think I made a good decision.

I once accidentally drank some red wine at an awards ceremony. Was under the impression it was Vimto, but the bitter taste informed me otherwise.

It's ok to have every once in a while, you won't hurt your health as long as you don't overdue it. But it's not like your really missing much, I don't see how people can do it all the time.

There is nothing wrong about it, tons of people like this.

Just keep your drinking for social events (like work-related events, etc). Keep it to a drink or do, and you will be fine. It's a great way to socialize and there is nothing wrong with drinking as long as you keep it under control.

I don't drink either. Nothing unusual about it.

I have a similar background in my family. Simply keep drinks to special occasions to loosen up. Even then it only takes one drink to do the job. It works for me.

Don't worry about it OP. If you don't wanna drink, don't drink. If you do want to drink, don't let 'bad history' with alcohol stop you, especially if you are aware of it. Alcohol abuse has more to do with life issues than it does alcohol.

That being said, don't let alcohol scare you. Having a few drinks is fun.

You're not weird, just over-analysing it. A couple of drinks will just make you feel buzzed and jolly, there's no negative emotional reaction (other than possibly enjoying yourself so much you make a tit of yourself).

At least try it, going out and getting shitfaced is a rite of passage.

Dude, who cares? I didn't really start drinking until about that age, and I definitely do it in moderation. You don't want to drink? You'll be joining such luminaries as CM Punk, Jerry Lawler, and.....uh.....

help?

I'm 29 and have never had a drink. No particular reason, just don't want to do it...don't want to roll the dice on whether I might be the alcoholic type, don't want to compromise my own inhibitions and embarrass myself.

I tell people I'm going for the world record.

Sounds like you might already be aware but it has been shown that a higher than average predisposition to alcoholism is genetic, so bear that in mind. The health effects of moderate drinking however aren't anything to worry about, I fact there are quite a lot of studies that have shown a little wine now and then is good for you. Possibly sponsored by wine companies though, who knows...

No need to and there is evidence of alcoholics having a genetic component.

You are not weird.

I drank every day for a year and a half and all it got me was fat, laid, and in trouble.

Now I only drink once a week. Lost about 5 pounds so far (3 weeks of not drinking except on weekends.) I didn't even need to exercise.

You're not missing much OP. If you want to do it socially and have one or two, go for it, but avoid drinking as stress relief or just something to do out of boredom, it'll wreck your health.

Nope. Just be you. I personally enjoy drinking and have developed a love for great whisky but I also view drinking as a weak thing to do if you're not gaining enjoyment from it and just doing it out of habit.

You aren't missing out on anything. I drink once in a blue moon and usually in a social setting. The taste is usually acquired and honestly I would prefer alternatives.

I have a bit of a family history with alcohol so I e learned to keep things in check. The whole teen alcohol culture that I experienced from friends left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Nothing really weird about it, I would however say its one of those things you should try in order to at least have some understanding of what it is. But do it on your own terms of course. People can be assholes about drinking.

Good for you. I was on my way to full blown alcoholism at that age

Much better to just not drink much. Be open to having a single drink at parties or get togethers, though. It's probably worthwhile to know and understand booze without partaking with any regularity or in excess.

Are you?

People need to learn what this shit actually means.

He didn't say he had the disorder, he just said he was anti-social.

This is like someone saying that they consider themselves obsessive and you yell at them for claiming they have obsessive compulsive disorder.

Drinking is simultaneously the best and worst thing, depending on who you ask. I do like to drink on cold winter nights. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

I agree. I think that if I were to drink, I would rather do it in the company of people I can trust.

I have a friend whose father makes his own beer, so I could try that. I am also interested in mixed drinks and wine.

Besides some really irresponsible parenting events where I drank wine and beer once when I was like 7 or 8 (just a small glass mind you, but still...) I only started actually drinking when I was 27. Don't worry about it.

I am 24 and I love drinking. I have friends who don't drink at all though. It's really a non-issue.

I'm 29 and didn't drink for like 6 years. Now if I want a drink, I'll have one and if I dont, I won't. There are plenty of drinks that taste good or complement a meal well.

No. That's not weird. I drink on the weekends but I don't blame/judge people who don't. If you ever feel like you want to try it, try some beer or a glass of wine with friends.
