I did (and could) not bother to beat Xenoblade Chronicles. Am I in the minority?

I hope that xcx's faster traversal at least makes side quests easier to complete and exploration less cumbersome

You can sprint in X. You can also fast travel to any hexagon on the Gamepad map. You're also given the 'Follow Ball', a small little orb that, when activated, leads you to your destination. You can also apply the Follow Ball to quests.

I'm honestly surprised over the amount of hate. I thought this game was well loved around here. Either that, or it's just the title pulling out all of the haters.

Played and beat it myself. One of my favorite JRPGs.
It is, but you can still like/appreciate a game even if it burnt you out before you completed it. Not finishing a game isn't the same as hating it, especially when a game is as long as XBC.

I liked the areas, though even on dolphin it didnt exactly look great, and I enjoyed some of the characters. However the best part of the characters was what was present in heart to hearts, which required a fucking absurd amount of grinding to see them all. All the terrible MMO style grinding, the randomly smacking into orbs to hopefully get the item you need, the awful combat, and locking growth options behind more fame grinding just added up to one shit game.

I put 97 hours into it and finished it. Most of this was probably because of Xeno in the name and Xenosaga episode 1 being my second favorite game ever. By the end though, I had used dolphin to get infinite of the item that increases affection so I could see all the heart to hearts, and I put in a 1.25x EXP modifier and double the character movement speed.

Was this your first visit to prison island. Cause if so then yeah you are actually halfway there.

h

how did it take you 80 hours to get there
Some people take longer than others. I'm at 30 or 40 hours already, and I just got Sharla.

I think, so far, the things that annoy me the most are activating the sidequests, the absolutely horrid inventory management, and the low res textures.

I imported the PAL version and played quit a bit through the homebrew channel on my Wii. I finally got sick of dicking around with the homebrew channel stuff and gave up. I now have the NTSC version. I wonder if I can convert my PAL save or if I have to start over.

The last fight of the story takes so long and I kept dying at the end, never finished it yet

Xenoblade isn't really that long, though, unless you're going for 100% completion. It's length is around something like Xenogears (60-80 hours) if you just focus on getting through the main story and only doing some exploration and quests. Enough for you to stay afloat when it comes to combat.

I bought the game in April and I'm still working on it, playing on and off. It is fun but Ereth Sea and that High Entia city can be a real pain finding your way around. I can see a lot of people giving up around that point in the story. It's weird how sometimes you get an arrow pointing which way to go and other times not. Anyway I hope to finish it before XCX because I do really enjoy it.

I couldnt finish it because I was so hyped up about a Xenogears sequel and found that it was absolutely NOTHING like xenogears... it just couldnt fill the shoes

It's your fault for thinking it was Xenogears sequel when it was never once marketed as anything like that. Not once, anywhere, was it said to have anything to do with Xenogears, so I really don't know what made you come to that conclusion. A bit daft, if you ask me.

Inventory Management was annoying, I don't know why the only Nintendo RPG that got it right was Pokemon, and that wasn't until Gen IV.

But I don't know I feel like 80 hours for prison Island is a lot! Even if I take a lot of time myself in some other games, but I guess it all depends on how people want to pace themselves.

Sorry not all of us read Gaf all day long... I saw it in passing and heard it was a spiritual successor to Xenogears, that alone sold me

Played 60 hours in less then a month, took a 3-4 week break, and then played another 40 hours in the next two weeks finishing the game. Somewhere halfway the game it definitely reaches a point where you get burned out if you try to do everything but taking a break fixed that for me.

Still the bext RPG of last gen by a landslide for me. If you're not into the MMO style of combat I can see someone not liking it though.

Are the hexagons more prevalent than the fast travel locations in Xenoblade?

All areas are divided into hexagons, so yes.

However, you have to manually set up a one-time prompt per hexagon for you to be able to fast travel to it, instead of simply entering the area like in Xenoblade.

change title to any game and you will get your answer.

If you see global stats on steam, most people play a game for the first hours and never touch it again.

I remember I got it for Wii and was really set back by how awful it looked what with the no anti-aliasing or anything and didn't get very far, but then I went to play it on Dolphin and got pretty far in until suddenly it just started crashing left and right and no amount of tweaking the graphics settings was helping me, and faced with the option of having to replay all that and with way worse graphics to boot I just didn't have it in me. I told myself if it got an HD Upconvert for Wii U I'd give it another go (and the sequel) but it's pretty apparent it's not gonna happen at this point.

The way people were going on about it made it seem like it was as high quality as Xenogears. It was a surprise to me that it had an ordinary bland RPG story, a tedious crafting and inventory system and side quests that revolved around boring item collecting.

Xenoblade is high quality. To my knowledge, there's zero glitches or bugs. The rest is purely subjective, though, but I will say the there was a good amount of story quests that were pretty fun and interesting. I loved that you could explore how people went on about living their lives and getting to know their hopes and dreams. Don't get me wrong, I love Xenogears, but I can also appreciate Xenoblade, too.

I really wanted to love it but couldn't. Made it to about the sword bridge area.

Would have loved it more if it was HD so I could have appreciated the world design more.

That's such a strange thing to hear when coming from gamers on a dedicated video game forum. Say no more.

Why?

I'd rather play two 30 hour RPGs than one 60 hour one, read two 300 page books than a single 600 page one, and so on and so forth.

RPG bloat is one of the worst things about the genre.

Do people actively go for side quests in this game? That seems like maybe a bad idea. I just go where I want and kill what I want and pick up what I want, and if that fulfills a side quest I consider it a happy accident. One nice thing is at least you don't have to return them to the quest giver, very convenient if a little nonsensical.

How are side missions structured in X?

The title is pulling out all the haters there was a time even when it was years after the game came out that there was a xenoblade LTTP thread like every week and there was always praise

For me it's not length so much as the quality of the content. The Souls games are all fairly long but there isn't filler or padding. Xenoblade's side content is 100% garbage MMO filler, and I can't stand that. And for those saying "you don't have to do them", well it's either that or grinding 'cause you'll be underlevelled, and besides, the main content isn't that much more fun either.

This might be news to you, but adults do not have time to spend through 60-80 hour games.

RPGs in general have a ton of bloated content that deserve to be trimmed.

Sounds like you're just more interested in ticking off a list of video games. "If I play this 60 hour RPG, then that means I can't play these TWO 30 hour RPGs". Time is on your side, don't worry. If you're enjoying a game, why does it matter how long it is? If you're not enjoying it, then yeah, put it down and play something else. The length of a game is never something that overwhelmes or intimidates me, especially not when it's a game from my favourite video game designer.

Two 30 hour RPGs is double the cost, two 300 page books is double the cost, and so on.

The expense is already one of the worst things about games.

I played 200 hours of Xenoblade and loved it. The story goes to some crazy places and some of the later locations are breathtaking.

While I love Xenoblade, it did take me about 9 months or so to beat it. I did have to put it down during parts I didn't like, but overall it was a great experience and I recommend playing in short spurts for when it bogs down

Finished it with all skill trees unlocked for all characters, not an ounce of regret.

Took a long time and had to take a few long breaks.

Might do a NG+ playthrough in the future.

I never got out of the first city. RPGs and JRPGs especially are my favorite genre but I got so bored so quickly. I may try again since I didn't give it a real shot but man I didn't enjoy what I did play.

I played Xenoblade Chronicles for a while, and eventually quit.

About 6 months later, I went back and finished it because I was trying to clear out my backlog. I wished I never quit. The game is superb.

You make it seem as if something in the game offended you or it was disgustingly vile, or something. You should give it another go. What did you not like?

Interesting. I stopped the same moment in the game as OP. And that's right after I went on how I love the game, especially the look of the game [after seeing Eryth sea]. That's irony, I know.

It just felt like the story wasn't developing. The sidequests were too sidetracking... and the combat was not customizable enough to my liking (i wish i could've given direct commands to my partners).

However, I still plan to finish the game with a little cheating... like faster walking and more exp.

I got to the second section of the Mechonis and I realised I just wasn't enjoying myself anymore. The story was interesting enough, but the game in between was just becoming more and more boring. Plus, I found that some of the characters just didn't fit into the kind of party I wanted.

Pretty much this. I really wanted to like the game, and appreciate what it achieved both in terms of art direction and technical accomplishment, but I guess it just wasn't for me.

I just want to find another game I enjoy as much as Chrono Trigger...

I don't get this. If I don't like the game then I will just quit even if it's a 10 hours game. But if I like it, then what's wrong with spending 100 hours+ playing that game? It sounds like clearing games is a chore to you.

I beat the game but found it got worse as it went on. It also didn't help that I had extremely high expectations due to the fans swearing up and down that it was the savior of JRPGs.

Or it's... just not fun? Something doesn't need to be a "broken mess" to be boring.

I don't know, it sounds like he only made it to the first town, which is like right at the beginning of the game. Sounds more like he was just instantly turned off by something in the game rather than playing for longer and realising he wasn't finding it that fun. Seriously, Colony 9, the first town, is literally right at the start of the game, lol.

I have stopped, I guess 2/3rds of the way into the game I am in galahad fortress and have defeated 1 major (returning) boss.
I played it fairly intently, and I think I just got burned out. I can't remember what the trigger was to stop, I think I moved on to replaying witcher 2 in preparation for witcher 3.
I do intend to return to it and complete it. The thing is with difficult or long games is that if you take a break then returning can be a bit daunting. The same thing happened with dark souls where I think I stopped about 4/5ths completion.
