Opinion I dig Sony's "marketing" around the PS5.

I prefer marketing where things are clearly said and easy to understand. I am a consumer, I need to know what to expect, otherwise I am not buying.

Series X is 12 TFlops.
Series X is 100% BC with Xbox one.
Here is Series X, here is the controller.

Everything has not been revealed yet, but what has been revealed is clear as water.

To be fair... they simply dropped am image of their controller, barely said a word and ended up as headlines across the world for a week straight with everyone making mock ups of their ideal color scheme of the controller.

Thats a different kind and level of marketing.
That's not marketing, that's just a reflection of the standard we hold Sony too. They don't even have to try, bare minimum is considered good marketing and greeted with endless fanfare.

I see what your saying I just think no company is trust worthy in absolute terms. Things change, leadership changes. If we didnt as consumers call out things we didnt like games would be full of loot boxes now for one quick example.

I hope WWS ethos will affect the decision making at Sony rather than the other way around. I still think it always pays to be cautious. If you accept anything then companys do take advantage.

Oh of course never follow a company blindly I agree but they've given us a good gen thus far and there's no reason or real sign that won't be the same next time around .. and with ms shaping up nicely after a bad gen competition will be getting stiff at some point so playstation can hardly rest on there laurels no matter how big of a fanbase they have , hope your happy whatever choice you make 👍

Whhhat would you think is more likely.. from a non biased perspective.. that a hysterically successful game console company would actually employ a few buildings full of chimpanzees who basically sit back and say "you know what, fuck advertising", or that they would have weighed up their options and decided that this would be an effective way of marketing their console?

And if from the above you conclude that they are likely not morons, and mix that conclusion with the world record that tweet set, can you not also concluded that a) they knew what they were doing and b) it worked?

Just spitballing here i mean [my username] after all~

Sorry no. This is a strange take and reads more like you're trying to convince yourself how great a "plan" is that would otherwise piss you off in every other facet of your life.

Did the mortgage loan go through? Do you have cancer? Are you having a boy or a girl?

Welllll sorry not sorry, you'll just have to be patient... we kind of haven't made up our minds here and we're trying to figure out the best possible way to tell you what you need to know in the most cold and vague ways possible. Don't worry, you should have your answers when we feel ready in i dunno.... maybe a year? We're just too busy rolling around in all our current gen profits like scrooge mc'fuckin' duck

You called an event FULL of developers cardboard cutouts! You know...some of the most intelligent, hardworking people in the tech industry!?!?!?

You're soooooo salty of the success of the Playstation brand that you can't think logically.

So yes, leave the grown ups to talk!

TL - DR: I like that they're not telling us much, forcing PS fans to fill the topic vacuum with optimistic speculation and defensive positivty.
I've mostly seen PS fans grasping at straws and downplay the importance of teraflops.

I admit, I'll probably buy PS5 myself (unless it's a jet engine like the PS4), but I'm not going to lie to myself - based on current information the X box Series X is a more powerful console.

Sony has a history of getting lazy once they're at the top. I definitely don't think they're morons or anything but I think ppl allow them to get away with doing the least possible. They're supposed to be outdoing their competition but they act like they don't even have competition and to make matters worse, we reward them for it. The mere fact that they had the most likes on a post about a controller (im pretty sure the reaction was similar to them announcing a logo) just says that ppl will buy anything their selling regardless of marketing effort. I don't consider that good marketing, that's just blind fandom. If you really want to see good marketing just look at the year the PS4 was being launched, this is a far far cry from that.

Post like this I find hilarious. Your post is trying so hard to seem like a middle of the road customer, but it's obvious where you stand.

You are a fan boy; It's okay to admit it, we all have our biases.

The thing xbox fans seem to forget is that games are the most important factor in buying a console.

The only marketing they've had thus far is the controller.

If you're confused about it, I assure you that when the marketing team starts, you will know it whether you want to or not.

I agree that games are important. That's why I bought a PS4 because I wanted to play Bloodborne and Last of Us (skipped PS3/Xbox 360 era).

I'm not a middle of the road customer. I'm being realistic. I don't favour PlayStation or Xbox. I'll buy whichever product is appealing for me. My base PS4 was loud and my Pro is also quite loud. It's manageable with headphones, but I don't want to always play with headphones. So this will be a big factor with next gen consoles.

If it's skipping out on PS5 exclusives because I bought an Xbox series X, then it's fine. My time is limited and there are enough multiplat games that I can enjoy.

It's been pretty meh, imo. Dripping various information just makes my hype level never really reach a big level. It also makes you fail at selling the overall package of the console.

I think both Microsoft and Sony have both failed in different aspects. Microsoft has been a bit too forthcoming, which I think partially is a mistake. I think having a smaller window with big events revealing things as it moves closer to the release date is better for keepin' up the hype. While Sony has been dripping things in formats that just don't really get me excited. And they both feel way too early, unless they are releasing holiday 2020, and even if it's so, their choice of spacing and presenting the information feels weird.
Playstation 4 on the other hand had a brilliant marketing campaign. You had the february reveal (9 months before release), which was frickin' awesome. But it still left some things for people to speculate about. Allowing that hype at a good level until more was revealed at E3 (5 or so months before release), with more games, pricing and design. Then you had a bit less exciting Gamescom (3 months before launch), but which still brought some hype as well, with the release date being announced. That and they nailed the overall selling point of the console, while also having amazing ad campaigns that hyped people up.

Never forget, fall 2017. It can happen again
Sony's 'marketing' the last few years has been abysmal. Nothing like the PS4 which was focused and surefooted. Ps5 thus far feels half baked with their messaging.
Hopefully they actually start putting in some effort soon to fix their messaging

I think PS5 "marketing" can be summed up in 6 parts so far (unless I missed some):

1. Last year. Spiderman SSD video

2. Last year. Cerny talks vaguely about PS5 to Wired.com

3. I think November 2019. Sony releases some more vague info (the same day some Sony people got fired)

4. VGA awards. Godfall announced for PS5

5. Cerny does his GDC stage show

6. PS5 controller officially announced

I think it’s brilliant !!
They have 7 months to release information and there doing it in tiny piece. And every time something little is released they get free press for a couple weeks!
Just look at what showing a picture of there controller did!!

Frankly, their "marketing" seems pretty complacent with their marketing knowing hordes of thirsty fans will drink up whatever they are serving.

The Cerny reveal wasnt great. I'm fine with a tech talk...and I like Cerny, but he's not Mr. Excitement. Sony's message also made it appear to be more than it was ever gonna be. The controller looks sweet, but we've only seen a pic.

I know they'll ramp up very soon, and I'm fine with that. Comparatively, Microsoft has been knocking it out of the park. Prolimarily because they have to. I wouldn't praise Sony's marketing at all....but theres more to come, and I'm sure they'll do great.

I think they're being way too conservative. Sure, they get a ton of hype over the smallest things, but that's because past consoles have built a huge following. They aren't doing enough to build that base further imo.

A strong happy article for Sony on some of the worst console marketing ever?
This forum is pro Sony sometimes its ridiculous. Might was well just rename it to sonyneogaf.com.
Did you actually read between the lines of the OP? He's basically saying that Sony is manipulating people while MS is being upfront and honest and although both methods seem to work obviously Sony is the "evil" one for being so cunningly deceptive and they are gaining free marketing by their "rabid fanboys" and the "sites that cater to them" (these are OP's words). I don't know but that sounds very "pro-MS" to me in a passive-aggresive style. Maybe read the OP once more and it will make you feel better about your favorite company promoting "good and honest" marketing unlike the "manipulative" marketing Sony is using.

Looking at the list of members who pressed the like button at the OP also confirms it.

I think this is exactly is, people claiming that they failed because they want more information and because things are not clear and so on and so forth are just not getting it.
This is exactly how you got Trump in office.
This is how social media and news work now, might not be the most honest approach but it is undoubtedly the most effective and efficient.

somewhere i felt they are lacking something or have no confidence in ps5. The marketing strategy is somewhat confusing to me. They even came short on annoucements. All feel like forced reveals.

No the marketing has been awful.

On the other hand I don't even know if they need to market the PS5 for it to be successful.

If we look at social media metrics, they have 2 record posts in gaming history (console logo and DS announcement) in Instagram and Twitter. So they are very successful with their marketing.

I'd prefer to see the console box and the remaining hardware details, like which type of wifi, bluetooth, etc. in addition to OS features and apps. But I assume that they prefer to spread the announcements over time to keep the hype and increase the communication providing by protagonism to each one of these parts.

The other elephant in the room are the games. I assume that, as happened in recent years, due to downgrade controversies we saw in the past Sony prefers to wait until they are pretty close to the announcement to make sure they show pretty final in-engine stuff running on the console that looks as close to the final game as possible.

This is pretty difficult specially in an unreleased console since not only the devkits but also SDKs and engines keep evolving and changing over time and it's pretty difficult to plan until which point they will be optimized, which means that certain visual effects or other stuff may need to be changed or removed in the future maybe because they sometimes work in some part of the game but causes issues in another one, or that they made some memory or horsepower budgets that in the final version they are pretty smaller. So knowing that many people won't understand this, and even if it doesn't happen many fanboys will be spreading FUD, it's normal that they wait for as long as possible before showing their games.

I expect them to reveal the console in May (more focused in the box form factor, additional secondary hardware specs and OS features) with also maybe some game teased. But I think they will do a separate event after that focused on showcasing launch window games, maybe in June or July. Then in September or so they may announce release date, price, extra OS features, to showcase launch window games and to announce release dates of them, specially the games being released the same day than the console.

And well, due to the current record PS4 success in both hardware, games and services they don't need to invest a lot on marketing. Many people is already hyped because they trust them for their consoles, its games and services and want more of these. I mean, people will preorder the console when possible even before knowing games announced for it. Or preordered game like TLOU2 and decided to skip any gameplay video or related info because they trust that the game will be great and prefer to don't be spoiled.

That not marketing at all and they do that show every console launch.

See here's the PS4 one

It's just people went ape shit expecting the same as the Xbox Series X
Like the PS5 one, this talk is focused to devs in a dev focused conference. They aren't marketing focused to consumers.

For now seems pretty good the marketing.

- PS5 tech talk at Wired (focused Tech magazine) 1
- PS5 tech talk at Wired (focused Tech magazine) 2
- TGA GodFall trailer.
- Public PS5 logo reveal at CES

- PS5 tech talk at GDC time (coronavirus affect)
- Public DualSense revel (coronavirus affect)

Now they just need to do the Public PS5 reveal and show games.

Seems pretty ok marketing.

Only the bold are reveal aimed to general public (the actual marketing).
The others are aimed to Devs and hardcore speculation forum users like GAF.

BTW the hype and buzz around these three reveal are working amazing well.

One Big Room, Full Of Bad Bitches
If you have to start a thread to say it’s not about my box vs your box then there’s gonna be trouble.
.

I kinda wish people would stop starting threads with that line. If you have to claim a thread isn't a console war thread, something is wrong. Don't say your thread isn't about warring, just write a thread that actually isn't about warring. Kinda like people saying "I'm not an asshole." Don't say you're not an asshole, just don't be an asshole. Prove it.

The replies will remain the same regardless. There will always be low effort drive-by's by derailing shitposters for either side.

I think Sony will deliver the goods further down the line and that will be the only thing people will end up talking about.

I'm curious, are there any specifics you are anticipating? I am not sure what else they can unveal that MS can't also match. We know about the SSD/storage bandwidth already,

While I wish we had seen more from Sony at this point, I can't argue with their social media tidal waves. The DualSense reveal won the internet, for sure. I just wish we knew what the system looked like, but I suppose that will come in the next couple months and will be enormous, get insane views/reactions

Reason he/she have to say it because every thread about PS5 gets filled by some people whom are having a psychotic breakdown and they have to come to spam some xbox comparisons and "bbbbut xbox can do this too... bbbbut 12 tflops!!". So yeah, it is fine to state that this is just about PS5 if OP wants to talk about PS5 and not to listen the never ending choir of parrots repeating same stuff. Some people are just too stupid to understand that we can talk about thing A without talking about thing B. Like we can talk about Honda specs without dragging every othe

Except how many of those replies/comparisons you mention are actually replying to someone who said something equating to PS5 > XsX? Not all of them, but a lot are. It happens on both ends in every thread. If someone is going to claim the PS5 or XsX is better than the other, it is fair for people to counter those claims. Plenty of people write about the PS5 without bringing up the XsX and vice-versa but plenty others throw out little petty jabs and poorly concealed shots while they are at it, ala thelastword thelastword

It works both ways

Who's Mark Carney? Cardboard cutouts? Moron go and play with dollies and let the big people continue to have rational discussion.
.....because only Xbox create gaming hardware!?!?!? I concur...complete moron!!!

I feel like you are heading down a dark path, my friend

you are in the acceptance stage.

I for one feel that they are on track with all their console releases. Microsoft is the one acting weird, revealing way ahead of launch, so they tried to set a different bar and sony went nah.
so im cool with it.
I would love to have more info, but I know it will arrive no later than july

3. same
4. Well. Godfall wasn't very good example of next-gen game tbh
5. GDC talk was GDC talk, that Sony marketed like console reveal and it backfired pretty badly
6. Dualsense reveal which was put together at last minute, because Sony feared it would leak to the public

I don't know what OP is talking about, but that doesn't sound like "good marketing"
Sony never marketed GDC talk as console reveal lol

It was marketed like Road of PS4... just to talk about the tech aspects of the console for developers.
They pretty much nailed it.

It's true though. I'm considering going X Box and I never would have if Sony this last year hadn't happened.
All polls (that include GAF pools) disagree with you.

Only Xbox users trend to buy new Xbox.
Everybody else is planning to go PS5.... that is what 60% or more of the users will do.
