I had metal get stuck in my eye when I was a welder. You need to get it out because the metal could rust. Trust me, you don't want that.

They'll numb your eye so you won't feel a thing.

I had that happen with a speck of dirt before. Anytime I blinked I felt a bit of pain, it sucked. Went to the ER and the doctor got it out right away.

As others have said, go to an optometrist or ER. You really don't want to risk infection in the eye. Could easily lead to blindness or even death (brain infection).

Also for everyone in this thread ... WEAR EYE PROTECTION for shit like this.

On a somewhat related note - Years back I tried to one-hand a small nerf football and deflected it into my eye. Now I have two permanent specs in my field of vision :(

I kind of feel silly making this thread. I would have ended up at the ER anyway, I just wanted to know if anyone had experienced this before, and how serious it was.

Anyway I was in an out of the ER in less than 2 hours. The doctor lifted my eyelid and saw it. Got it out with some eyedrops and a q-tip. It was bigger than I expected
They scanned my eyes to make sure it didn't scratch it, and my eyes are a-ok! I also found out I have 20/20 vision :)

They even let me keep the piece of metal as a souvenir.

How much did all this cost you? Good to hear eye is in good shape.

Fucking Canada. Why is your medical system so logical?

In the US that would have been at least 350 plus extra for the eyedrops and Q-Tip. Even more if they added an aspirin.

edit: Just realized that the OP went to the ER and came back in less than 2 hours. I've had 3+ hour waits every time I went to the expensive damned ERs here

Lol.

An eye specialist would charge you $350 just to look at at it, after the ER referred you ($500) after looking at it.

Don't screw around with eyeballs, you've only got 2 of them to fuck up so get it looked at and have the crap taken out and done properly. I mean sure, it's not doing much now but if it slips and lands on your cornea? Could cause some serious damage.

EDIT- well seems you already did this but whatevs. Advice stands either way.

Well, you were lucky.
If a tiny piece of metal actually penetrates your eyeball, it can and will cause a rather nasty infection. So if anything like that happens again, don't even doubt for a second and go see a doctor.

It happened to me last year with a bit of copper thread. Get it checked. Now.

I was checked and the doc said my eye was clean and the bit of copper had been removed when I used an eye wash (it happened while at work). I was given eye drops to keep my eye moist and clean and they weren't just the regular eye drops you'd find in a store. Key point: you may not be able to see it but a professional may find something.

That's what my instinct is telling me to do. There's a walk-in clinic close to me so I'm going to go there now.
Your instincts are telling you to go to a hospital to have a piece of metal removed from your eye? Geez, they must be tack sharp.

The politicians don't want you to know this.

I know in the US, the ER in hospitals have a system for who gets seen first. People with chest pain or difficulty breathing will get taken in right away. People that take their child into the ER because they've got a cold, will usually have to wait a few hours depending how busy they are.

He wasn't alone.
Got a sliver stuck in my eye from working on a car about 6 years ago. I went fairly soon so rust build up was minimal. The eye doctor used some numbing drops on the eye then took it out with a needle and tweezers, then preceded to show it to me in a very, almost proud look at what I did, kind of way. Which I thought was a little odd. Either way, the procedure took about a minute and was pain free.

We do skull/orbit xrays on people a lot for pre-mri screening if they have a work history of welding and such. Many dont even know they have metal in their eye from it. Don't feel bad or get all doomed feeling if they say its ok. Just stay the fuck away from high powered magnets you can go blind.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I have a very small speck of metal in my right eye. I was using a very small screwdriving, and a teeny piece of it snapped and flew in my eye. I can see fine, it doesn't usually hurt, but if I move my eye around a lot or close my eyes shut very tight, I can feel a bit of pain.

Considering going to the ER, but what could they do that I couldn't do at home? I tried eye drops, but nothing so far.

Go to the hospital you fool. You want a corneal abrasion? You will get an infection.

My gf an aspiring EMed doc told me to tell you this.

I don't see the point of going to a doctor. Hospitals are a ripoff anyways. They'll leave you with some antibiotics and a $1000k+ bill. Just wait it out, I'm sure it'll work it's way out of there out eventually.

I took my brother to the ER with high level pain (as a result of stage 4 cancer), his chest and legs had begun to swell, and his skin and eyes were starting to turn yellow. We had to wait for over 4 hours before he was seen by a nurse(!) and another 3 hours before a doctor was able to see him.

After being seen by the nurse, the hospital staff spent most of the fucking time grilling him (with very pointed and disrespectful questions) about why he refused to continue chemotherapy at that hospital and instead was getting treatment with specialists out of state. This questioning went on until the doctor showed up, asked him a few questions, gave him one shot of morphine and sent him on his way. We took him to the out of state cancer hospital the next day and found out that his liver had begun to fail.

No, no, no! It's exceptionally important to get metal out of your eye ASAP. Complications can develop in less than 24 hours to waiting for nature to run its course is never in your best interest.

I'm glad the OP when to the doctor.

I dunno about where you live, but the ER here prioritizes people with emergencies. When I had something stuck in my esophagus, I got sent back immediately. Passing some 10-15 people waiting.

Yup. They don't care even if you can pay. If you have a medical emergency that requires attention now, they NEED to treat you. Least that's always been the experience here in Michigan.
