The last RTS games that I really enjoyed...? Think it has to go way as back as Red Alert and Warcraft 2. Perhaps only outmatched by the fighting genre, RTS seems to have become the most overcrowded-not-enough-new-genre and it sickens me...
Is it just me or has RTS improvement over the years just been crap? And not just RTS.. Any sort of PC strategy games! I love PC gaming, and it's my prefered platform, but god there is a lack of diversity...
I gotta say though, that I recently decided to buy Medieval 2: Total War, and holy crap, it's pretty damn fantastic. It's like risk meets scrabble meets.. well... Total War. Taking Richard Lionheart + 10,000 english foot knights during the the crusades, to the holy lands for the taking of jerusalem and acre against Saladins forces = for the ultimate win. the fighting animations on each man on each individual unit(max 10,000 on screen at once) is more detailed than most ps2 and xbox games that I have played.
Im just stunned at this game. Im currently playing the campaign. Decided to go offensive. I have gone to war with almost every force(I am england). Killed the scots... and the Irish. Then the entire UK was mine. Then I got heat from the french, venice, Spain, Portugal, even Turks and the Mongols.
The campaign is massive. 5 centuries of epic warfare. I am war with so many nations that its almost not funny. I have plauge in most of my towns. Edinburg is a mess. I got no guvenor, and the people are rioting. I have the black plauge in dublin, and english rebels are wrecking havoc on our coastguard.
And then all of the sudden, the pope decides to launch a crusade against the muslim nations. and then they launch a holy jihad. Great... Like I had enough soldiers in my underwhelmed armies to give away. I got to much land. Almost all of denmark is mine now.
Italy almost... conqured rome today. Ony Sicaly is left. Got spain. Moved into marocco. And now im getting heat from Egypt. I have to many cities and outposts and castles all over europe. I have a good income though. Have managed many of them with tons of farms, trade rutes, roads and trade by sea. but its hard... Defecting commanders. death in the royal families. Both my king William, and his son Rufus are dead, in sieges.
Anyway, im rambling on.. great game. Company of Heroes was decent and all that, but this is really great I think. If you like history, I think you will find allot to like about this game.
