I LOVE 2D Platformers! (56Kers Beware?)

NES Classics Metroid, Metroid Zero Mission, and unlockable Metroid in Metroid Zero Mission didn't stop that game from coming to VC.

I think/hope we'll see Kirby Super Star (AKA Best Nintendo Sidescroller Ever) show up on VC eventually--just not for a good 14-20 months after the DS game.
Metroid Zero Mission came out like 3 years before the Wii

Great game. Unlocking the original Pitfall added a couple more hours of gameplay.
Hah, well I played it on my 32X so I guess we were both a bit behind :p

Now, we both know that you and I agree on a lot of things, but I take issue with this statement.

As awesome as Kirby Super Star is, it's still second - a very close second, mind you - but still second to the masterpiece that is Super Metroid.

Though I give Kirby Super Star full credit for its multiplayer component.

Klonoa >>> all of your favourite platformers

I don't know...I picked up Klonoa 2 for GBA used a few days ago (it was six bucks, why not?) and...I'm not feeling it yet. It seems solid enough - good controls, vibrant graphics...but so far the game has just had this slow-paced, pedestrian feeling for me. I appreciate that it has elements of a puzzle game, but the game is almost painfully easy, even in spite of the often clever puzzle elements. Please tell me it picks up in later worlds.

That, and Klonoa's voice sample annoys the ever living heck out of me.

No, that's DKC2. The DKC3 levels that look like it have mountains in the background.

I will gladly sing the praises of Commander Keen, especially 4-6. Wonderful atmosphere, addictive non-linear gameplay, good music, and the best EGA art that ever was. I'd love to see Tom Hall design another platformer one day.

2D platformers are my favourite genre as well. If you are a big fan and started gaming in the 90s, you missed out on the true hey day of the genre, the 80s.

Some of my favourite games:

Super Metroid:
supermetroid.gif

Turrican 2:

Donkey Kong Country:

Wonderboy in Monster Land:

Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins:

Super Castlevania 4:

Sonic CD:

Bubble Bobble:

And if you're a fan of 2D and you haven't played Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins. Then you are part of the problem. It's not only one of the best 2D platformers to come out in years, but one of the best ever made.

djtiesto

I absolutely love this genre too, with Super Mario World being my #1... shame that it's all but dead :(

The GBA Klonoa games were decent but they can't hold a candle to the console versions. Try to find Klonoa 2 for PS2, it's the best in the series and last I checked it didn't cost too much to buy it on eBay (unlike Klonoa 1).

Umihara Kawase and Skull Monkeys are so fucking awesome.

Going more recent, Super Princess Peach is one I think deserves a bit more respect in general.

Tremis

This man does his research.
I dunno, but its rare that a game can make me feel depressed while playing it. I was one of my most anticipated games when I heard it was coming out for 64. What a squandered opportunity and I've hated yoshi ever since. I'm gonna enjoy kicking his ass again in Brawl. :D

Tremis said:
In Yoshi Story's defense. Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64 were incredibly tough acts to follow, and it's biggest flaw was how criminally easy it was. A flaw remedied by trying to beat the game with 31 melons in every stage.

The first screenshot is of Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose for SNES. The second shot below it is Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure for Genesis. They're both pretty fun. Buster's Hidden Treasure has absurdly long passwords, though... but of course Buster Busts Loose has no saving, so I don't know which is worse... anyway, both are pretty good games. The one you are thinking of, though, is Tiny Toon Adventures: Wacky Sports Challenge for SNES, which took the sprites and graphics from Buster Busts Loose and used them in an awesome minigame/olympic sports style title. It was indeed a pretty great game, but it's not a platformer. It is definitely a game worth recognition, but it's more like something between Track & Field and Mario Party than anything else... (and it has 4-player support! Awesome with a multitap!)

Tremis said:

I played Yoshi's Story recently, it's actually somewhat under-rated... the graphics are great, it's a lot of fun, the difficulty's not bad (it seems to have Star Fox's save system, but it silently autosaves between levels, so just reset the system and you can restart the level... :)), and it's fun. It is all about collecting, and if you really want to beat it you do have to complete some pretty frustrating melon collection quests (that make the "reset to try again" thing absolutely essential, as it's easy to permanently fail to get some melons), but you don't HAVE to do all of that.

Yes! Easily some of the best platformers ever! After Mario and Sonic, Keen is probably my third-favorite platformer series... the first trilogy was best, really, but the second set of three games is great too (Keen Dreams isn't that good, though). I think Keen 3 was my favorite one... awesome, awesome game. Interesting twist ending for a game of its type. Good graphics and gameplay. Great sense of humor. Yorps. :)

Keen 1... back when I got it I didn't have any consoles, just PC. I'd played console and arcade games of course, but didn't have them... so Keen was one of the most amazing experiences ever. You really can't match nostalgia value like that... and it's held up amazingly well too! Keen 3 might be better overall, but the first one is special.

AWESOME thread. I'm so glad I just bought a SNES. Now I just need to get some games other than SMW and DKC.

The 16-bit era really were the glory days of gaming...

Game was fucking awesome for a free game. Played the shit out of it.

Then I got to the end and found out it had the most terrible/abrupt ending in gaming history.

You do all this work and go through all this story and you're building up to the final climactic end and you're like "YES MY QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED!" and then it's all like "The End. <lame cutscene>"

And I was all like "THE FUCK?"

But for a free game it was alright.

Oh, I don't know. It has some flaws, but I think people would generally like it a lot more if it just had the pogo. I liked it, anyway. If nothing else it's interesting to see how their engine development progressed between the two styles.

No pogo ruins it!

The weapon was also kind of lame, the graphics were the worst in the series style and design wise... but it's the lack of pogo that's the worst part of it. It is interesting to see an engine halfway in between the two others, but other than that... it's easily the worst of the seven. It's not a bad game (all of the Keen games are good), but it's the worst of them.
