So, I kinda want to get into the PC88 and PC98. Are there any games that you guys recommend? Probably Nihon Falcom games are a good bet, right?

Too bad that among the retro craze of the last 10 years we never got games made in this art style.

I've been looking at these games and loving the art for 24+ years online and even owned a few PCECD versions of the games.

Porn art from them too :3

Well a couple like VA-11 Hall-A and 2064 are sort of in that same category but obviously not as detailed or good looking. I still like them.

Pity so many of those games went untranslated. I'm a sucker for old visual novels that made you "Think" and "Search" 25 times before allowing you to move on and discovering you missed a crucial time-limited event and you're now stuck.

I'm not being facetious, I really think those games rule.

Quite a few PC98 games have been translated in the latest years.

Tuned Heart being the most recent one.

Goddamn... I love the aesthetics on display in these shots. I'm going to have to seriously look up a way to play something of this stuff if it's possible.

By fair my favorite platform of the 90s aesthetic-wise. Just takes a fair amount of homework to avoid the hentai games (or find them if that's your thing!). Luckily there are some good emulators out there to try this stuff out because without those, most of these games will just fade into the annuls of history.

That's the thing though, so many seemingly normal games just have random fan service hentai in them. Grounseed, for example, is a pretty run of the mill fantasy VN/RPG that has borderline underage unconcented sex that comes out of nowhere. Exceptional soundtrack though, so whatever. Play it for the music.

Let's not forget the PC-98 port of Prince Of Persia! That had some nice graphics.

I actually played this version. I didn't get pretty far, but I strongly recommend this game.

DavidXNewton's comment about this version in this video:
"...It has a very busy appearance that can look like a bit of an assault..."

Touhou anyone?

I can believe it. Dithering is pretty standard stuff in art with a limited palette. PM2 does a decent job at utilising those 16 colours well, but it really does look like 16 colours.

9YYN0GP.jpg

i just remembered there was this lady in PM2 who looks suspiciously similar to the girl from PM1.

i had no idea PM2 was using even less than 16 colors. wow.

hey CitizenHal,

what is your recommended setup for playing PC98 games ?
i wish i could get the real thing some day.

The pixel art on display here is incredible, but the UIs and the actual in-game screenshots rarely look like something I’d stomach to play today.

Are some of these still good to play?

There was a French computer game that caused controversy back then too and to avoid any legal issues, they revealed that the sexually suggestive girl voice was actually a robot which was allowed.

Compared to top games on other systems, PC98 games are not very good.

1. Action parts are especially annoying,
there is this weird scrolling issue caused by fixed sprite position.

2. There is no in-game explanation for what you're supposed to do in order to get good results.
You must piece things together on your own or rely on walkthroughs.

To most people today, this will NOT feel like a proper video game.

Language barrier is another serious problem, but some games have English patches.

If you are okay with this, PC98 has many games with pretty manga style graphics and good FM synth music.

This was one of the better PC88/PC98 games during early 1990's and it was ported to SuperFamicom, Mega CD, PC engine CD.
I hear there is also a windows version.

Princess Maker 1 (summer months)

personally i felt the color choice was really nice here, because PC98 games usually stick to desaturated colors.

Princess Maker 2 (one of the possible endings)

I was aiming for becoming the queen regent and ruling on behalf of the aging king
but screwed up somewhere and the girl became the king's concubine instead.

Maybe it's my own opinion, but I always think that modern games (including ADV and RPG with such elements) are too easy on puzzles and difficulty overall. A lot of "Missions" degenerate into "Fetch A from location B and Kill Monster C", with aid of auto generated maps and compass on mini maps.

I do wish to see games that absolutely offer no clues at all, with much tougher puzzles (e.g. I'd love to see more difficult types of classical cyphers built into games, and players have to read in-game booklets to crack them). But it would be too difficult to design such games.

This isn't really true. If people could do it in the past, they can do it now. The amount of resources, support and knowledge within game design is larger than it has ever been, so it isn't that making cryptic games is too difficult, it's more that the mainstream audience for games has grown and changed.

Back in the mid-90s you could have what we would consider a "AAA" game having really hard puzzles that require actual note-taking. These days, no chance. Big games need to be accessible to a large audience to make as much money as possible.

Modern indie games are another story though. 1-man passion projects like FEZ are so cryptic you literally need to solve ciphers by looking for patterns/clues and taking notes. Crypic games are still just as strong as they ever were in the past, they just aren't in the AAA catagory anymore. Look hard enough and you'll find them.
