This is a dumb question but one I've never had to consider before.

My monitor doesn't arrive until Wednesday, but I need to test my build/motherboard specifically before then. Once everything's connected and wired up, will a simple power on + attention to fans + beeps etc. let me know things are working okay? What would I NOT be able to tell without a monitor, if something goes wrong?

-EDIT- Oh great top of the page with a stupid question haha... Well, whilst I'm here, what makes this monitor HDR exactly?

You could only hear a beep if you have an internal speaker connected. Fans usually spin at full speed for a second or so, then spin down to their normal low noise level. The computer will check the memory and beep again if it finds none (this is a good check to know if the motherboard itself is working: remove the RAM and turn it on). Depending on how the BIOS is set, the drives (floppy, CD, HDD) will blink once trying to boot. If you don't have a bootable disc, the process will stop here with a warning on the screen. If the OS you have on your bootable disc can emit sounds, then you will hear them.

Weird that it should market HDR as one of the defining features yet list 99% sRGB/16.7 Mil colours as the range...

That and I've just discovered it's 6bit, not 8bit.

Seeing as this is intended for art/design use, I'm starting to wonder if this was a bad choice...? Or is 6bit+FRC ok? -EDIT- Turns out this is pretty normal actually...?

I think i am gonnna buy 8gb of DDR4 before it gets even more expensive, here in chile the price has increased over 50% in the last few months. I read it is a worldwide shortage. Anyone knows when the prices are thought to come down?

Bought my PC with them 6 years ago, still going strong today. So unless something changed in the last half decade they're great to me. I want to actually build my next PC to get a better understanding of how everything works, plus that sense of accomplishment, but if I wanted a custom build I'd use these guys again.

Would love to have the confidence to build my own PC. Feels like I would need to put a lot more research into it than I'm willing to do :)

The names of motherboards are too much for me already.

Newegg has many warehouses and not all the warehouses have the same thing. I've been ordering from Newegg since 2003 and when your order splits up, it always because your items are in different warehouses. It's the same with many other online retailers, including Amazon.

So guys, while I decide what cpu to upgrade to, I was thinking to sell my current setup (complete or only some parts of it) and I was looking for an estimate.

Here's the config:

- i5 4670k
- Asus z-87a motherboard
- noctua nh-d15
- corsair ax860
- samsung evo 840 ssd 265gb
- 2x8gb ddr3
- Titan Xp
- fractal Define R4

I naturally want to keep the PSU and the GPU (plus the noctua if it's compatible with whatever I'll end up buying); but if it's more convenient to actually sell them all I could think about it.

What do you guys think I could ask for this?

Let me just reiterate I love the P5 case; if you're looking for an open air, it's a great option. I got for $99 after Newegg rebate and I think that deal goes until 31st.

D5 pump is awesome. I can't believe how quiet it actually is considering it's size and power.

HW labs makes beautiful rads. Good choice


My friend is looking for a good cheap CPU heatsink. Anything out there besides the coolermaster hyper 212 evo?

Without the GPU and PSU I'd say about 300, max 350. CPU 100, Mobo 70, d15 50, ram 40, case 40. Unless you can find someone willing to pay 700 for it now you're probably better off keeping the gpu for a little while longer since it's value already fell off a cliff. Get some use out of it and sell afew weeks before the 11 series is released and the value takes another nosedive.

Yeah, that's how I felt before so I just focused on learning which parts I needed and had those guys build it for me. I later added some fans and customized the airflow, as well as upgraded the GPU, so this time I feel ready to try learning the whole thing myself.

I'm vaguely interested in upgrading from 6700k to 7700k, just to get the 4.5Ghz turbo (please don't mention overclocking to me...), plus I can drop it in the same mobo I presume.

However, just wondering if this will increase temps?

Well if I'm going to drop money on a new monitor now. Probably won't be till November, December at the earliest. Right now I'm running a 970.

Right now just Overwatch and Mass Effect, but I still got Witcher 3 and a bunch of other AAA gorgeous games in my backlog. Would love to go back to Witcher 3 and downsample it from 4k to 1440p.

I guess the better question to ask...

Is IPS worth spending the money over TN? I have a non gaming TN monitor right now. If I go with the Acer Predator 1440p TN I'll save over about $200 if I don't go with the Asus 1440p IPS one.

Seems pretty pointless to upgrade, depends of course how much you have to pay to get that tiny boost.
Do you mean by "dont mention OC" that you will not OC?

Well, 300/350 (maybe more since I'm in Europe) is not bad after all, it will cover my new cpu,one way or another.

Titan X pascal is still an incredible gpu, of course I will be getting more use out of it. After all, the 1080ti is only marginally faster.

I'll see if I can sell cpu-mobo-ram combo, otherwise I'll just pass the system along to my wife upgrading the office.

My PSU has suddenly started to get quite loud when I play Overwatch. I'm not sure I'd ever really heard the fan on it before above any other part, but now it's very noticeable and I can feel a lot of hot air at the exhaust when it spins up.

This is my PSU - Seasonic G-550

Is there anything I could try before I just go ahead and replace it? I've thoroughly blown the dust out of it (there honestly wasn't much at all) and it's still loud.

The fan may have gone out of alignment. You could try replacing it if you got a spare one, though it might not be financially judicious.

You can pick up the Acer version in IPS form right now for $600 at both Best Buy and Costco. Spec wise it is virtually identical to the Asus PG279Q at a 25% discount. And the stand isn't nearly as garish as pictures make it look.

I'm 99% that Acer for $600 is a misprint. There's no way it's that cheap. It must be the TN panel not IPS.

No doubt TXP is still an awesome GPU, its just NVidia destroyed the value of it with the 1080ti, that's all I'm saying. Best to hold on to it for now, enjoy it, then reconsider when Volta leaks pick up steam.

My estimate was based on prices of used parts I can find around my area in the US. Things may be more scarce where you are from, so you can price your parts accordingly.

Is it still under warranty? I would try to RMA it and sell the replacement to cover some of the cost of a new one.

Why does he wear the mask!?
Getting a weird bug with my g-sync monitor, when I play a game it flickers black and to the game constantly, saying display port no signal?

Its seems to fix itself in certain games like FIFA, but not others? Tried unplugging plug etc as that was a "fix" on Google

Only does this for games too, not chrome or steam etc

EDIT: Seem to have fixed it

Yeah, these ram prices are out of control right now and I'm trying to be as cheap as possible. Are there any major differences between 3000mhz compared to 3200mhz? I want the corsair leds but the 3200 variants is pretty expensive. I was really hoping to pay less than $100 on ram tbh

Thinking of upgrading my system and finally retire my old i5-2500k.

I see three options right now.

1. Go for an i7-7700k Intel z270 build - €805
2. Go for a ryzen 7 1700 AMD x370 build - €813
or
3. Wait a couple of weeks and go for a ryzen 5 1600 AMD B350 build - €550

The i7-7700k and the ryzen 7 build are about the same price while the i7 gives me more performance for gaming at the moment. The ryzen though might be the better pick in the long run. It has double the cores and will therefore make it more future proof (I had my sandy bridge i5-2500k for about 6 years).

If simulated ryzen 5 tests are to be believed the 1600 will perform similarity to the 1700 at €100 less while also giving me more cores than the i7 which makes it at least a bit more future proof.

I think the performance of the r5 1400 will not be able to compete with the three choices above. But maybe I am wrong. Also I don't think going i5 will be a good choice. I see at least 8 threads minimum for the future.

What should I opt for?

tl;dr
i7-7700k offers best performance
r7 1700 offers best core count and thus (maybe) future proofing
r5 1600 offers a middle ground and the best price but maybe not enough future proofing?

Seems intimidating and certainly takes some research but ultimately not that complicated. Most importantly, you don't need to start researching from scratch. It is hard to wade through all the information out there but you don't need to. There's plenty of resources in this thread and you can feel free to PM me for guidance.

You can do it bruh. Once you do, you'll never buy a pre-built PC again, save money and I bet you'll really enjoy the building process itself.

Old PC is gone. :( I got legit a little sad when I was taking it apart earlier. What a glorious piece of hardware the 2600k was. Still is. May it run for another 6 years in someone else's machine. :bigbosssalute:

Ordered pretty much all the new parts from Mindfactory.de, except the case, which I bought locally. Pretty much the best prices around & great customer service (according to the forum posting majority). I still haven't decided what to do regarding the new monitor. I'm slowly warming up to the idea of getting a relatively cheap 27" 1440p IPS screen to carry me over until the end of the year, see what the landscape looks like then. Will see.

Your motherboard supported that CPU out of the box? Generally the Z170 boards would need recent BIOS updates to support the kaby lake cpus. Just curious, maybe you got a recently produced one.

Nice build by the way. 2x4GB ram or 1x8? I'd be looking to go to 16GB probably.

I've gone ahead and got a new PSU and I've got a question about the PCI-E connectors.

My GPU (gtx 1080) has one 8 pin connection and one 6 pin. The cables that came with the PSU have one 6+2 connector and another 6+2 that splits off from the end of the cable.

Should I use both ends of one cable or should I plug in a second PCI-E cable and use one end of each when hooking up my GPU?
