Thanks, I will check this brand out. Any recommendations for high end of air cooling spectrum?

Also a rather stupid question: do I need to change / add thermal goo when changing my cooling?

I guess Noctua is considered the high end of air cooling, but imo not as much a temp difference against Thermalright.
Noctua do have better customer service, and will provide free clips when there are new Intel/Amd sockets.

Oh yes, you need to clean off the old goo with rubbin alcohol and reapply a new one. Most heatsink will come with a free tube.

But remember to turn on your pc, runs some apps to heat up the cpu before shutting off for removal.
This makes it easier to take out your old heatsink.

Scythe Fuma 2.

Like longdi longdi said most should come with some thermal paste but if you want to buy some thermal grizzly kyronaut is good stuff.

Thanks for your recommendation. I watched below review and it seems like this cooler checks all the boxes. I hope I will be able to install it without breaking anything!

Sorry Guys, another recommendation request. I would also like to replace the square fan in the back of the case.

The quieter, the better. Price range: top level is fine. Any recommendations?

120mm I assume?

If so then Silentwings 3: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WrvZxr/be-quiet-bl066-505-cfm-120mm-fan-bl066

If you want/need RGB then Corsair LL120's are decent but be warned, they are bloody expensive.
I like some RGB but these Corsair fans look ridiculous, I will go for stealthy look of SilentWings! I need to grab centimetre and do so measurements first (yes, that's how I roll).

I also have 2 fans in the front, I guess SilentWings will fit in there as well?

Yeh as long as the spaces you have are for standard 120mm fans then they should fit.

Best thing to do is check the website page for your case, it will tell you what size fans are compatible. It's usually 120mm for case fans but sometimes they can take 140mm fans. The case I have can take either.

Speaking of cases. I got hooked with all these upgrades and now I'm thinking about buying a new case as well 😅.

GHG, you seem to be well informed, please help me to spend some more money on some quality case. 🙏🏻

Depends on what your needs are and how much you're willing to spend. What's your full list of components? In particular how many hard drives do you have?

My general case recommendations are as follows:

Ultimate showcase/aesthetic cases with good airflow capabilities:
  • Lian Li pc-o11 dynamic
  • Antec crystal p120 (the case I have)
  • Thermaltake View 51
  • Corsair crystal 680x

Reasonably priced minimalist design cases with tempered glass side panel cases:
  • Sharkoon PURE steel
  • Deepcool macube 310
  • In Win 303c (if you can find stock)
  • Nzxt H510

Other reasonably priced tempered glass cases:
  • Deepcool mattrex 55
  • Thermaltake V250 tempered glass
  • Thermaltake h200 tempered glass
  • Phanteks P400
  • Cougar Puritans RGB
  • Fractal Design R6 TG (a bit more expensive than the other options)

If you don't give a shit about looks and just want good airflow:
  • Fractal design Meshify C
  • Coolermaster masterbox Q500l
  • Be Quiet pure base 600

I don't think I'll ever understand those super flashy builds, full of rainbow leds everywhere on the case and fans. Are people looking at their computer instead of the screen or something?
I admit some of them *do* look really nice though, I just... don't look at it when I'm actually using the computer, you know?

Yeah I agree but then again I game on a OLED. Depending on your screen some kind of bias lighting can make the blacks appear deeper at night.

I've just done one for myself for the first time.

It's been a really satisfying experience overall. Planning all my parts to make sure they complement each other visually, actually putting it together and then it looking exactly how I envisioned it to look. It's also the first time my wife has approved of how my PC looks, whereas other times she has just grumbled about the "ugly box" in the corner of my office area in the spare room. Whenever people have seen the build in person it's got nothing but compliments and I've had people refer me to others to build PC's for them or their kids.

It's the knock on effect of 'Instagram generation" I guess, aesthetics are important for most things now.

We've gone beyond PC's being being seen as just for offices or the thing that gets shoved in the dusty spare room that never gets spoken of or seen. That's a good thing.

It also depends on if you're willing to (and want to) spend money on things that will just be for aesthetics.

Just like there is food porn, we now have computer porn.

avoid flashy build if you dont want to cable managed led cables, so messy.
in fact, also go all nvme ssd and use external hdd for storage, no sata cables, much clean, less dust. :messenger_peace:

Some youtube channels that do some nice content on this stuff (in particular look for the PC build videos):

Also look at the completed build section of PC part picker:

And reddit battlestations:

Trust me when I say it's a rabbit hole if you're into visual design in any way. My next build will 100% be a custom water loop build.

Yeh the cable management part is a nightmare for these types of builds if you get any case other than the Lian Li pc-o11. You 100% need to get some high quality cable extensions (or make your own if you're capable) because the cables that come with most power supplies are stiff and look like trash.

But you can have drives that require sata cables without it fucking up the look of your build, it just depends on where the ports are on your motherboard, your cases cable management and where the hard drives live in your case. You've got to plan for that stuff.

Thank you for your recent support. I successfully upgraded my CPU cooling, RAM and changed back fans. The system is so quiet now, it's kind of uneasy.

I will definitely buy more RAM and new case soon.

Speaking of aesthetics, are there any cases that have the glass panel on the opposite side? I sit with my PC to my left so the glass panel will be against the wall.

I've decided to begin buying my parts, and have chosen the i9 10900K for my processor. Unsure about the MB, can anyone recommend me one? I'm considering the Asus ROG STRIX Z490-E GAMING; my budget is $300, give or take. Also looking for some memory, 32 Gigs. I've read above that Crucial is the best?

Corsair 600c is what you're looking for.

Was going to do the same thing as you before I decided to just buy an extra small cabinet and put my PC on that to the right of my desk.

Well... for as much as I am mixed about pc gaming, I still do like it as my hobby so aside from old pc's posted earlier, I also take care of my normal pc. Updated my cable management today !

Really nice. What are you using for the desk cable management? I'm looking for a solution to clean up the wires around my desk, it's probably the only thing I have left to sort out.

Will try and post some pictures later but I need to cleanly route the wires along the right edge of my desk but it's quite exposed.

Just this
hammer every cable You can on the back of the desk.
As for the back/bottom cable management. The power strip is on the shelf under. It's there normally in this desk (ikea malm)

Ah damn, I was hoping there might be a solution that didn't involve me having to put holes in the side of my desk.

Thanks anyway.

Gaf PC Guru's; I need some guidance :messenger_heart:

I currently have:
3770k @ 4.7Ghz
1070 at 2.1Ghz
16GB DDR3 (2600Mhz)
Noctua D14
Silverstone FT02

My System is about 7 years old ( the 3770k is abit younger though). I'd like to update to the 4xxx AMD chips coming out BUT DDR5/AM5 will come next year. My CPU is really close to its last legs and I'm sure my minimum frames would be so much better with a modern CPU. My cooling + case are still top-notch ( afaik ) .

Should I update this year, which will lock me into AM4? I won't have that many upgrade paths (depending on the board I guess) or is it wiser to wait next year for AM5 + DDR5..?

Do you actually have a (measured) requirement that your system isn't able to keep up? The only reason I can think of rushing to upgrade is if you're at >60hz. Granted, upgrading now isn't the worst thing in the world. DDR5 is gonna be more like a 2022 thing and very expensive at first, and then unlikely to be all that important considering how GPU bound games still are, though I suppose games might evolve a bit more by then so as to use the CPU & RAM better.

So idk, if you plan to keep the CPU platform for >5 years then waiting for DDR5 is a safe bet as these platforms have a longer & longer lifespan. But I'd say there's no rush to upgrade necessarily, since the 3770K is still quite capable & ultimately the 1070 isn't a very strong GPU anymore so it's not like your framerate is gonna jump (though I understand the minimums will be better at least).

Not particularly, I'm just sensitive to frame drops and I'm trynna figure out the best path without breaking the bank so to speak. I game on a 1080p/ 75z with freesync. Frankly, 1080p is not enough and I do crank it up to 1440p when I can via DSR or whatever downsampling method the game can do.

There's barely any info on AM5 + DDR5 so its hard to say; one thing I have noticed though is that AMD's first releases from any new products are never that strong. Look at the 1700x to the 3700x now, completely different beasts. If AM5 was a bad launch - that would give me another year of waiting; which would be torture frankly.

Value wise you can't go wrong with buying the CPU 2nd hand tbh, I reckon the new ones will be much more costly than existing CPUs while not moving the needle much in terms of performance. That being said, I just don't think the improvements are that big between yours & Zen 2. Intel still has a significant advantage in many older titles as far as that goes, and one that's not really gonna go away due to the fundamental difference in architectures (with ringbus always offering lower latency vs chiplets), so while the difference might be more significant if you went to a let's say 10700K or so at 5 Ghz, it's gonna be lesser on AMD, but in any case hard to really recommend either in your case as it would be costly for both setups.

4790K is close enough to a 3770K for the video to still be useful

I've gone from a similar system to yours (mine was a 3570k @ 4.6, 16gb ram, 980ti) to a 3900x, 32gb ram, 2070 super and it's a night and day difference. So much smoother, much better minimum framerates and the CPU bottlenecks that I was experiencing in certain games have evaporated.

What it comes down to is whether you want to upgrade now (around the time of the new nvidia cards) or wait for later this year when the new AMD CPU's launch. Also depends on your budget of course.

I have a stupid question. I have a pair of two 8gb of ddr4 3200mhz ram (16gb total) and I was contemplating getting another pair. There's some on sale here but it's not the exact same model that I have, is it a good idea?

And is 32gb of ram worth it instead of 16gb?

If you plan on playing flight sim or do any work that requires it on your computer then yes.

As for the question, on mixing brands... can you share what the exact models are (both what you have and what you intend to buy).

Under all the external branding there are only really 3 different manufacturers of ram - hynix, samsung and micron. That is what you want to match (along with the speed of course). Also check your motherboards QVL list.

Is there a reason the i9 10900K is currently impossible to find? Has Intel ceased production due to the pandemic? I’m not paying $3-500 over MSRP for this chip.

Quick question. I can see a lot of cases don't have any space for an optical drive. Since I was figuring I would want one for certain things (rpcs3 for example) do USB optical drives actually work as well or in my case would I just be better off getting a case with a external drive bay and a regular sata optical drive? I figured I'd ask since when I looked up rpcs3 is had a list of compatible drives and I don't know if it's a deal where most drives work fine, they just list drives they know are going to work.

I really should stop following/reading this thread.

I don't need a new computer right now. Mine is 6 years old, and wasn't even great back then, but there's nothing that was released since I built it that warranted an upgrade, and nothing releasing "soon" that would, either.
Still, it's getting old, and reading all you guys' posts makes me want something new. Something powerful. Although, again - I have absolutely no need for it right now. I have a lot of money saved up thanks to the lockdown cutting down on my living expenses considerably, so "budget" doesn't even matter, just... I don't really need anything... *sobs*

Oh well, I'll just look forward to the "I need a new PC, 2021 edition" thread when I actually do need an upgrade for something I really have to play!

Yields & demand. I wouldn't normally say yields but I believe the 10850 SKU is specifically being introduced to alleviate that somewhat.
Do you need the cores or do you need the frequency?

Very much phased out now. I swear I saw one reviewed on GN recently but I can't remember the name.
USB optical drives are fine AFAIK, but for RPCS3 you would want to stick to their compatibility list or find reports online for external drives that work. A quick google mentions an ASUS drive but it isn't exactly cheap.
