Look at this madness

This is something that looks straight out of a Metroid game. Or some undiscovered planet or something. But it was in my neighborhood all along, growing on some guy's fence... and there were plenty of them.

Any plant/flower expert here can tell me what that is and if humanity is in danger?

Isn't this just a passion flower (Passiflora)? Some variety of it are pretty common here (Italy) but I think it is originally from south America. It has been named after the Passion of Christ

They should name it after some theme park ride instead. That construction with the small leafs in the center looks like a carousel with boats of some sort.

That looks like the flower equivalent of a sci-fi planet death ray weapon.

That particular Passion Flower (Passiflora caerulea) produces edible fruit. There was one in my garden when I was a kid. The flesh is a bit tasteless if I remember correctly but the seeds are sweet. Only eat when fully ripe, when they're a deep orange colour.

I used to have this growing all along my fence as a kid. The neighbours would pick the fruit off and throw it though our open windows.. ahh.. London <3

I had these in my garden until aphid's absolutely destroyed them last year. Beautiful flower, and easy as fuck to grow too.

There's an app you can get for your phone called PlantNet in which you can take a picture of a plant and it'll tell you what it is.

I took a picture of your picture and can confirm that it's a "Blue Passionflower" or "Passiflora caerulea L."
