• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

I think I'm done with gaming now, and so are you!

Could be worse. I agree that there are less and less interesting games released (for me at least) but every now and then even I'm getting a banger. There are still a few games I look forward to this year (nothing from Sony though, their first party output is unsalvageable at this point).

Look lower down the gaming pyramid imo. AAA budgets have become so big that it has become very risk averse and samey at this level.

I can't figure out if these threads are 100% trolling or not, but gaming is as good or better than ever.
2026 is a amazing year, and i've played some absolutely bangers this year. A lot more to come too.

Games like Resident Evil 9, Saros and Mina the hollower to name a few. Absolutely peak gaming experiences.

Most years since 1990 have been amazing for gaming, and I'm sure the next 10 years will be as well.

After Sony's last State of Play, I didn't see one game I wanted to play. Not buy; play. There was nothing interesting, nothing new that stood out.
You could say the same about the Xbox and Nintendo side as well.
At that point, then we have others say, come to the indie side. The problem is that the indie side is really rough, asking low or high prices for products that aren't polished to a nice shine. Or gamers are asking developers who aren't in big groups and expecting too much from them.

I didn't bring up a lot of issues that people have had with gaming lately, but let me give you one more.

Price.
Do you want to spend 70+ dollars on a game or 1000+ on hardware (like a Steam handheld or box?) that you might hate now, from developers who actively hate you? Indie or AA or AAA.
Indie isn't going to save us. It's too flooded and not properly sifted to find the diamonds to make it properly fair for everyone.

I declare gaming (for now) to be over. We're just gasping for the last breath, and I've not been convinced by the posts I've seen before. So please, try to convince me otherwise.
Go retro and be happy again.

I swear to god, retro is THE answer to 99% of all your problems.

Super Mario Galaxy on the Steam Deck is just too good to be true!

I see you haven't played the GOTY Mina the Hollower. I pity you OP, but you can still make this right.

I can still cherry pick a few good modern games like KCD2, Talos Principle 2, Robocop, the RE games, Assetto Corsa Rally, etc.

They are very few but they exist. Plus i have a massive backlog of older games to play.

You can abandon modern AAA slop without abandoning gaming altogether.

Im not so dramatic, but for many years ive been pretty over the hype and excitement.

Buy games later for dirt cheap.

Then all these 5s and 7s getting passed off as 9s and 10s arent so bad

Games arent exciting for their price point anymore.

Theres plenty of other things I can do with that money

That being said, I rarely buy things day one but I did pragmata and it 100% worth it. So there are diamonds in the rough

You can have zero interest in everything Sony show during their conference (first party games suck anyway, at that applies to all consoles), and still find games that you are actually going to enjoy.

This year I have two games pre-ordered for now : Brigandine and Steins Gate. So that's a pretty good year !

Also pretty optimistic about Tomb Raider, which is great because rarely do Western AAA get my interest.

Sony games have been the same open world action/adventure type for the last 10 years. What made you think that'd change?

Taking the red pill like you would be the day where I build an expensive setup both laptop and desktop and another for Apple, Nvidia and anything interesting like what we see now, it's not the end of the world if you really care about the hobby and you could even push it to the next level if you really aim for that.

Damn I saw this thread and got excited that it was the weekend. But sadly it's only Wednesday. :(
Well, at least here in .fi, Wednesday is known as "little Saturday". If you want to get hammered during a work week, that is the day.

Great list but you forgot:

Mouse P.I
Monster Hunter Stories 3
Tides of Annihilation (hopefully)
Phantom Blade Zero
Beast of Reincarnation

And a shitton of indie games as well. Bro sounds like one of those guys who literally only plays sports/COD games every year lol.

Nintendo and GTAVI are the only exciting things to me these days.

Everything else is just meh or feminized.

Thankfully we are in the middle of a golden age for retro gaming

My "next gen" is the Superstation One and the Neo Geo AES+

Fourty plus years of gaming means what the fuck are you talking about?

Just play something from the various of decades till something comes along you like.

Posts like these just make you seem like a junky that must have the new hit 🤷‍♂️

And if nothing comes out you like, play older stuff. I haven't personally giving a shit about any AAA coming out apart from a very few odd titles that haven't been squeezed through the weird filter we've seen indoctrinate studios

Buy that Steam Deck, have access to fourty plus years of gaming. What's bad about that?

If your buying one for dragon age veilguard, well that's a you problem :messenger_beermugs:

I play max like 5-6 games a year and it's been like that for about 10 years now.

I play just the ones that excite me rather than look for something to play for the sake of it.

This year I haven't played a single game so far. Last year I think I only played Clair Obscure and P3 Reload. 2024 was just FF7 Rebirth and Metaphor.

Towards the end of the year I'll be playing GTA6, Stranger than Heaven and one more game, either Onimusha or that other PS5 action game by the Chinese devs.

Next year I'm buzzing for FF7R-3 and a few others JRPGs if they come, such as P6.

Anyway point being the older I've gotten the more selective I've become and I've realized what I like and just ignore all the dross that look nothing like wasted hours or I know wont give me the experience I'm looking for in a great game. Which is a memorable story, great characters, music, combat and art direction all coming together.

I just really think developers are making games for them and not for players.

Its always been that way!

Who the hell wants to work on a project for literally years of their working life that they don't believe in, its always been a chance not a certainty that the ever fickle "gamer" public is going to like it!

And the more reactionary and influencer-led the scene becomes, the more impossible it becomes not to take that approach.

The real change comes as different generations of people become the majority of the workforce.

See the reality is that most people don't stick around long in the business, because its hard work, and ultimately if you don't enjoy what you're doing not particularly rewarding.

After reflecting for a couple of days about the PlayStation Showcase, I have come to the conclusion that I am mostly tired of modern games.

There are a few exceptions like Capcom games, but games from PlayStation Studios really exemplify everything wrong with modern gaming. Not even because they put a gay woman in everything, but mainly because of the linear gameplay and bombastic cinematics for which you barely need to enter any input. It is all so busy and hectic with terrible millennial humor and dialogue. It's not even just Sony. Now, it could just be the trailer, but even the remake of Tomb Raider was guilty of this. I remember the original mostly because of it calm atmosphere and puzzle solving.

The feeling that has been predominating for me, and which is confirmed once again, is: "I need to play more older games". Retro games, games from last-gen that I missed, remasters instead of remakes. I'm playing The Witcher 3 now, and it's so so so good. This is my adult Zelda game that I am only discovering properly after 10 years. Saving a lot of money this way is an added bonus.

Not really hyped for anything that is coming out the rest of the year except maybe Onimusha and the Dave the Diver In the Jungle DLC. Even have my doubts about GTA VI.

But that's okay. I'm old. I realize that. And just like books, movies and manga's there are different games for different people. I don't have to like and play everything. Not judging people who keep consuming the slop that Sony and other companies keeps serving them every other week accompanied with artifical hype.

I can understand not liking the show, I didn't. But if there wasn't a single game shown you wanted to play you definitely are done with gaming.

There was a lot of variety. If none of Ace Combat, Stuntdriver, ill, Rayman, Wolverine, Ominusha, TOKON, Tomb Raider or Until Dawn 2 interest you then uh.... Every one of those is a different genre lol.

I can't say that I'm done if every month or so we can have a new game that gets my attention

While you leave, I'm having a blast with Mario Kart World and a few friends

Yes I do. I have expendable income and gaming is my hobby.
I'm having the (gaming) time of my life. What a time to be a gamer. Bring on the future and bring on more powerful hardware

If there is nothing in gaming you are looking forward to or want to play than the problem, quite frankly, is you.

So far this year:

- Mina the Hollower
- Forza Horizon 6
- Saros
- Pragmata
- 007 First light
- Pokémon Pokopia
- Resident Evil Requiem
- Mewgenics
- Nioh 3
- Screamer
- LEGO Batman
- Dragon Quest VII Reimagined
- Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred
- Tomodachi Life
- Subnautica 2
- Crimson Desert

And probably another billion indies I didn't mention.

Upcoming this year:

- Wolverine
- GTA 6
- Gothic Remake
- Star Fox
- Splatoon Raiders
- The Blood of Dawnwalker
- Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve
- Phantom Blade Zero
- Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced
- Dawn of War 4
- Control Resonant
- Star Wars: Galactic Racer
- Planet Zoo 2
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
- Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter

Probably more I missed. Sure you don't need to like all, or even most of them, but nothing? Come on.

A lot of those games are unnecessary remakes or sequels to games that are dirt cheap and still hold up if you've never played them (Ace Combat 7 and the Tomb Raider I-III Remaster collection have been in my backlog forever for exemple). So it's a bit difficult for me to get excited about those games.

What a fucking cry baby. Indie gaming is great, it's not the developers fault that you're too fucking lazy to go and do a bit of research on games you might find interesting.

Another one for the ignore list.
