I think Tekken 4 was the last visually pleasing title in the series, costume wise

"D"

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo
Everything up to Tekken 4, most characters got new costumes or got some pretty dope ass upgrades to their returning outfits (like Kazuya's updated look) or new threads altogether (King w/hair, Jin's hoodie/open chested gi, etc.) but I feel like after T4, Namco got a bit lazy and everyone pretty much has gotten locked into in "default" look, with us having to rely on customization or their alternate look for any sort of new variety

This was one of the things, albeit small and probably considered nonsensical to some, that made me appreciate the Soul Calibur series so much cause each game, everyone got a fresh new look and even changes to their physical appearance to represent age or just a new "look" altogether.

I hope that for the upcoming Tekken 7, there is maybe a old school or nostalgia DLC pack that allows you to download all the previous Tekken games costumes for each character or at least make them up to look exactly like the originals did, even adding a color palette option. T4 karate gi Jin in blue or T3 Yoshimitsu would have been TOO live

I never got the "we want iconic looks" to character designs, especially fighting game characters. The base character isn't going to change if you add other elements like different clothes and facial/hair features.

The base clothes set of the returning characters hasn't changed since T5, that's about 10 years ago now. Its very tired.

Yep, that is correct. Tekken 4 was the worst Tekken when it comes to gameplay, but the new costumes were really great.

Loved the Kazuya's player 2 outfit.

Oh, and :

I agree. Some nostalgia folks might flame me but I wouldn't have minded if Street Fighter changed it up some, I think the franchise desperately needs it which is why SFV looks that much MORE appealing to me for certain characters besides new gameplay elements and such. I don't seem to recall folks tripping over Chun Li's spandex and sneakers look in the Alpha games but I could be wrong

Ay, Diaper Heihachi had them HANDS, yo

Not to mention a pretty badass stage and BGM

I'd say a better way to phrase it is it was tops on style/presentation.

The voice over plus illustration plus the use of purples was damn amazing. Still stands as something greatly distinctive.

I agree 100%. Jin had the two best costumes in the series, and Tekken 4 introduced cloth physics (for example the pants that characters wore moved around in the wind) that weren't present in Tekken 5, or even the newest Tekkens.

It had some damn good cutscenes too (the intro is forever on my fave intros list), I think it was also the last Tekken that somewhat took its "story" seriously, especially the ending fights/cutscenes for Jin and Kazuya.

"Bahahahaha! Hate me! Curse me!"

Namco designs got way too weird post Tekken 4....Soul Calibur and Tekken have kind of ridiculous theatrical costumes that just look kinda bad. The fights just look like a very confusing mishmash of costume flourishes

Man especially Tekken 7, I mean what the hell is up with Claudio and Katarina? Man I miss the "simpler" designs of the older games.

KOF is the KING of "simple yet effective" costumes though I'll give them that. Shirtless Geese, MoTW Terry and KOF 99 Kyo were hella live too

Different not better. Tekken 5 designs are way better overall but that's all we've seen for the past 10 years so people are sick of that. There are tons of terrible costumes in Tekken 4.

-All of King's
-Nina Pink Biker Oufit
-Daiper Heihachi
-Fluffy Blouse Lee/Violet
-Long Hair No Care Hwoarang

Fluffy Blouse Lee fits his flamboyant character though lol, and I personally digged Hwoarang's long hair look. To be technical if he removed the biker goggles and let his hair down I'm sure he'd look like this now.

I kinda thought Diaper Heihachi might've been some sort of special Japanese ritualistic outfit for him going into battle or something, kinda like how Sumos wear whatever it is they wear when they wrestle but that's a wide, reaching assumption on my part.

All of those are good what are you talking about and y'all must be sleep if Tekken 4 has the worst gameplay. That is without a doubt Tekken 1 or Tekken Advance.

I don't know, I really liked Jin's Tekken 6/Tag 2 design.

And his Tekken 7 design is a pretty nice mix of his 6/Tag 2 & 4 designs.

Not sure if Army Hwoarang, Hood Jin or Diaper Heihachi are considered great design.

Hwoarang and Heihachi are subjective but Hooded Jin?

Them's fightin' words, breh

Something about Jin's gloves didn't sit right with me, like they clash with the outfit cause they look like goddamned GAUNTLETS compared to the rest of the ensemble which is supposed to capture a simple martial artist design. I miss the old regular gloves from T3, hell I've have even took the gloves from T4 withe the swirl on them.

That T7 outfit though is an abomination, I'm sorry.

Think of them as fleshy Jax arms. Makes them seem funny.
Warmed up to it but didn't like it at first.

There were some cool ones, but the customization makes the costumes whatever you want them to be in later games. Asuka's hakama outfit in 5 is also really cool, I've customized her in Tag 2 to have as similar an outfit to that as I can.

They grew on me, but man if I could have T3 gloves I'd switch them sumbitches in a New York minute

I thought these were pretty nice for Paul, although in game his hair for the P2 outfit was animated like shit.

Agreed 100% with you OP. They got real lazy after Tekken 4.

Tekken 4 had plenty of great fresh things about it, and to a point Tekken 5 did reasonably well on top of being balanced. But afterward they just dropped the ball on pretty much all fronts except character balance.

Tekken 7 looks so damn boring, it literally has nothing better over what Tekken 5 had 10 years ago. I've been a Tekken fan since day one, but I feel like I'm done with it.

I dont know about you, but im really hoping for a Soul Calibur revival right about now.

Cause you absolutely right, ive been watching gameplay for Tekken 7 and unlike TTT2, its doing nothing for me. Which is weird, but then again I've always been partial to Mitsurugi anyway.

I agree with yall. I been a fan of Tekken since 3, and bought all of them since then but this one just feels like its missing something. It feels...how can I put it....generic?

The music is dubsteppish and doesn't really fit the stages, character designs are either the same stuff, too over the top or just plain bad, and the new Rage Art mechanic doesn't feel like Tekken at ALL....like they threw that in for oooo's and ahhhh's for casual fans. It's good they are getting back into "story focus" cause the last few games, some of those endings were just wacky and out of place.

Idiotic part about it is I might still pick it up anyway cause my love for the series is that deep, and also cause they have never really put out a truly "bad on all fronts" Tekken game.

Not counting the handhelds of course.

Tekken 5 was the last game that Harada and co tried to do something new with. They've just been rehashing the same shit for 10 years now.

Maybe FGC peeps don't mind, but the series is just getting super stale for me at this point. T1-5 all felt very fresh at release, but the stagnation started ever since T6.

It's a shame since Tekken was one of my favorite series growing up.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the franchise.

It used to be my second favorite fighter next to Street Fighter. Now, even the prospect of getting a potential PC version isn't enough to get me excited about the next iteration. It doesn't look like it brings anything exciting to the table.

is tekken 6/tag 2/7 really that close to tekken 5?

Heartily agree with OP. T4 is probably my favorite of the series in terms of aesthetics. The mood of the game and the clothes were a big part of that.

I LOVED what they did with characters like Hwoarang, Julia, Xiaoyu, Jin, even the infamous Heihachi diaper look.

If only Namco followed their examples, even up to this point as I'd argue most SNK characters often changed clothes every game but stayed stylish. I think after 5 or 6, they just left it to create your own outfit. Most of the time I found myself trying to get as close to their T4 looks as possible.

i loved the Tekken 4 outfits, i wish that some of them would make a return.
however, i've never been a fan of hooded jin. i mean, the whole hooded concept is cool and all, but the actual flame design on the jacket & pants are waaay too much for me.

I personally thought T5 had great costumes too.

The problem is that after T5, they stopped changing the costumes. And it really makes it feel stale.

It was the early 2000s. Flames were the number one indication of cool dude bad boy

do you feel cool yet?
