I think Tekken 4 was the last visually pleasing title in the series, costume wise

Enough said

Are you suggesting that this hoodie isn't just as well designed??

My eyes. Pls stahp. Lol

I dunno what the fuck Harada was thinking with this shit. To each his own though..*secretly hopes customization is more robust*

Nah fuck that. We need REAL ass customization options..not no silly crap where you can fight with a damn wok or salmon magically taped to your back or maybe even a usable machine gun in combos but I can't get T3 military vest/camo pants w/knee guards Bryan Fury or T3 Hwoarang?? Da fuck???

Gonna need a major update for that to happen. Where it's at in the Arcades right now is the same as it was in Tag 2, minus decals.

Seriously though, they had a great base with Tekken 6, and now not only have they not built off of that base, they slipped over the edge and have yet to climb back up to meet its level. The additions to Tekken Tag 2 (free color changing, jillions of item moves, mostly generic customs) did as much harm as they did good. Maybe even more harm. And they've chosen to use that as the base for Tekken 7's system.

Agreed. Tekken 4 has the best aesthetic in the series.

Tekken 5 introduced customization items and that was the point at which the developers gave characters their "iconic" look and thought the customization items would cover any sort of changing up that players wanted to do to the characters.

But I think they failed to (and still fail to) realize that custom items can't replace the quality you get with default costumes and a lot of people are looking for breathtaking new visual quality.

Customizations in fact are very distracting now and completely RUIN the visual appeal of the game, which is why I want the option to disable customs online.

It doesn't help they're recycling the majority of customs from Tag 2 for Tekken 7. I understand budgeting can be tight for HD titles but I would be fine if they removed customizations altogether if it meant we'd get two decent, new default costumes for each character.

So harada did a good job, or the character artist. They updated it gave him skinnies and hightops.

I also want customization yes. Hopefully "the special things we are putting in console tekkem 7" harada spoke of includes that, muigel and the beach home stage in summer lesson as a stage.

To me they are.

Though I suck at fighting games, and lack any fundamentals in them. So there's that.

And here in lies the problem and decline of Tekken's mainstream popularity. None of those games play a like but aesthetically they look a like so casual see no difference. The reason for that is because Tekken Team believed with the addition of customization in Tekken 5 there was no need to change the characters default appearances because you yourself could change them to fit what you liked. It's a huge oversight in marketing by the developers that has hurt the franchise.

Lol, and in the background you can see the Summer Lessons blonde girl, and...

well you're not alone in thinking that. it is a popular opinion. i suppose i agree with that as well, but how different would they've had to make tekken 6+ in order for it to not feel like it is stuck in the tekken 5 bubble?

I found this to be the case as well with Tekken 4. It may likely be the most frowned down upon of the series, but you cannot dismiss the character designs, stages, and the ost. Thanks to this topic, I'm gonna play my copy tonight.

Tekken 4's costume design is definitely a high point in the series. (I won't say the high point, because Tekken 3 happened.) I forgot how much I love the concept art people have been posting. Bring back army brat Hwoarang.

Tekken 7 has that great Yoshi design, at least. And Jun's redesign for TTT2 is one of the all time greatest fighting game costumes.

What a superbly balanced outfit. So gorgeous.

Tekken 5 was the last game that Harada and co tried to do something new with. They've just been rehashing the same shit for 10 years now.

Maybe FGC peeps don't mind, but the series is just getting super stale for me at this point. T1-5 all felt very fresh at release, but the stagnation started ever since T6.

It's a shame since Tekken was one of my favorite series growing up.

is tekken 6/tag 2/7 really that close to tekken 5?

IMO, Tekken 5 plays very differently from Tekken 6 & Tekken Tag 2.I think what throws everyone off (including me at first, admittedly) is the fact that the characters have the same damn costumes in Tekken 5/6/Tag 2, and also the overall aesthetic is very similar between the mentioned games.

I agree wholeheartedly. Jun's outfit is hella dope, not even gonna lie

and judging by your avatar, you are someone who's played tekken since the mid 90s PlayStation days

Tekken 4 felt darker in some ways. Tekken 5 was on that same path, but the new cast members were too uplifting. You had light hearted Bob, Raven came out of nowhere, and nothing felt the same. T6 was just the same thing. I didn't feel like there was a Devil gene like I did with Tekken Tag Tournament and so forth.

Jin switching from Mishima style to Karate was weird. He was fun for a while, but T3/TTT Jin > Devil Jin.

What was horrible about T4 was the d/b to block and side stepping was holding down or up. I didn't like that at all. T4 is fun to watch and at times is fun to play.

I really felt like the moves got better along the way to TTT2, but the game as a whole just got larger for no reason at all. The characters are great, but T5 and T6 just did its own thing.

T3 and TTT stood out when I played it in the arcade. When T4 came out, my old ex BFF who played it, hated it a lot. It didn't feel like Tekken. T5/T6 just kept pushing onward. I guess it feels like they added so much content that went away from the good old days. It's still a lot of fun, but the ways in which I saw it originally feel long gone. T7 might be very good. I just wish they'd get an announcer that doesn't sound so arena ish.

Costumes were great in T3-T4. They went away from that for a while. Lots of customization and so forth. Printable cards for the arcade. You didn't have a genuine look for the series. Kazuya might. I liked Hworang's military outfit.

Not speaking about standard outfits but the alternative costumes in Tekken Tag 2 are amazing.

You have the special collaboration costumes like Squid Anna and Spider Jaycee. Swimsuits for everyone. Then you have all the customization options that include unique outfits for each character in addition to their standard ones.

Also on Wii U in addition to the great Nintendo costumes you had half the roster be able to wear random Snoop Lion tracksuits for some reason. You could also draw on characters and clothing with the Gamepad.

I agree that Tekken 4 had the most interesting outfits because the other games after look really dated stuck in the 90s and it somewhat looks conflicting when some newer characters get some modern looks. It would be nice to see some visual consistency and it wont affect the characters to get some outfit changes to modernize it while still keeping the essence of the character.

Problem is, Tekken 6's customization had several unique outfits for each character. Tekken Tag 2 had something like one unique outfit, then 5 generic customization sets that often look doo-doo on certain characters. It also had collaboration costumes (a thing since Tekken 5 I think). It lacked free color customization and decal editing, but the colors that were available made for more cohesive outfits, instead of the neon pink power rangers you see online and... big sigh... in the game's own built-in ghost battles.

Tekken 4 is my favorite in terms of presentation/design. It has my favorite Opening, favorite character costumes.
It feels like because of Tekken 4's big failure, they don't want to associate with this game ever again. They could have brought some of these costume designs as alternate outfits but never really did.....
And because Tekken 5 was a big success, they have been playing safe and are sticking with the design concept from Tekken 5 until now (with exception of Yoshimitsu who is constantly changing). I don't really mind that much since I like T5's designs as well, but I do wish they would bring T4's design back in some way.

What a superbly balanced outfit. So gorgeous.

And that's some real-ass high fashion. No, I'm not joking: http://www.dsquared2.com/us/jeans_cod36680806xe.html

There's also a matching shirt to complete your Jun transformation. I actually did a double take after seeing that character design.

Bob didn't show up until Tekken 6.

I played quite of a bit of T5 from the arcade, to the PS2, to the PSP. I wasn't thinking. I still think I lost touch with the heart of the series with the new cast. All the tournament players and core fans seemed to enjoy it. I still can't really get into them.

Which is weird because I enjoyed Steve Fox. Steve Fox was Tekken in someways more than others. Bob is OP for some people, Evo winning character. I just didn't get into him or even Alisa. I guess it's just me.

I did play and like Miguel quite a bit. In T6 he was pretty good.

Lars looks awesome, but I just can't play as him.

Steve looks threatening if you ask me.

I... I want to wear those and be cool.

But I'm no Kanye West.

Where have you been?

He changes every single game. That's not even going into the alternate costumes or weird customizations

I love that blue one. He's so weird.

Yoshimitsu's Tekken 3 mushroom head style is the best though. I think of it as his default look for some reason:

Can you even handle all this swag?

Aesthetically Tekken 4 was the best of both worlds because it had really good designs and no character customization to ruin them with.

I thought Tekken 5 had good costumes. Then again, Tekken 5 was my first Tekken game (though I played a fair amount included arcade editions of Tekken 1-3; and have played a small bit of Tekken 4).

I never really took notice of Tekken 6's costumes, because I felt the game in general was a step down compared to Tekken 5.

word.
I started at tekken 3/tag :P
I can kind of understand what people mean when they say tekken hasn't changed since tekken 5 but how different can you make it until it is not even tekken anymore, you know?

I can guarantee you that a great fewer people would say that if the series had continued changing everyone's costumes with every installment.

I'm allowed to guarantee things that are impossible to prove.

I do think you have a point though. other than yoshimitsu and jin's leather jacket, there wasn't a huge difference in costumes other than color iirc.

I LOVED Tekken 4's stage design in terms of aesthetics and art direction, character art design, and most of all...MUSIC! Tekken 4 easily has one of the best fighting game soundtracks.

Though some of the gameplay design decisions were questionable, I applaud the Tekken dev team to this day for really trying to evolve the Tekken franchise in a new direction. It stinks that it backfired. I actually had high hopes of a Tekken game that took more gameplay design queues from Virtua Fighter.

tekken 4 was the best game in the series in every aspect except the actual fighting. :P

the scene where jin struggles to speak with hwoarang in broken english is to me emblematic of how much more they cared about the presentation and consistency back then.

I miss new/unique/evolved art in this series. Tag 2 had the opportunity to add classic skins/costumes and dropped the ball.

It's probably my biggest disappointment with this series and I've run my complaints into the ground long ago. It went from semi-realistic fiction with a bend towards the fantastical to absurd anime.

Getting new artbooks with each new iteration has become a fucking joke.

Namco has lost the plot when it comes to art direction when they used to be one of the best..either someone left or got lazy the difference is astonishing.
Man especially Tekken 7, I mean what the hell is up with Claudio and Katarina? Man I miss the "simpler" designs of the older games.

KOF is the KING of "simple yet effective" costumes though I'll give them that. Shirtless Geese, MoTW Terry and KOF 99 Kyo were hella live too
Agreed about KOF they took style and function and made it work. At least until Falcoon touched it..i really hope they use the older designs and characters for the newest kof
