It was a factory in The Netherlands that was poisoning the environment with ammonia they used to make Oreos darker. Actually I don't think the ammonia is still in the cookie as it probably evaporates.

Yeah, I have had these boxes of plain chocolate biscuits. They look different, but they taste very similar to Oreos, they might even be made by Nabisco.

You might be thinking of ammonia. Big controversy in the Netherlands about it even though things like Ammonium Bicarbonate have been used for baking for a long time.

If it was "baking ammonia", it smells a bit while making the dough, but that's food grade, not poison.
