IGN: Vita is destined to sell better than 3DS

The name of the article is actually "The PlayStation Vita Is Set to Succeed". Quoting the most controversial parts. Sorry if old.

For better or for worse, Vita will be pitted against the Nintendo 3DS. But the comparison doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and even if you were to pit them against each other, Vita is still destined to sell better. That's because in addition to games (which Nintendo 3DS is still sorely lacking), it's also a much more powerful machine capable of doing a whole lot more than 3DS.

...

Nintendo isn't the primary competition for Sony this time around. The major complaint against something like Vita is that its space is being encroached upon by the phone and tablet market, and hence the real competition for Vita will come from Apple and Android devices. There's certainly something to be said about that. People are playing games on iOS in insane amounts. Hell, 30 million people play Angry Birds everyday. That poses a real problem for Sony.

...

When you combine everything the PlayStation Vita can do, it could easily make you wonder why it's been short-changed by many people in the gaming community. The Nintendo 3DS is certainly not going to take the Vita out with N64 ports and tired, worn series. The iPhone and Android phones are in everyone's pockets, but who's going to play a competent first-person shooter or action-heavy games like Arkham City on them any time soon? The Vita seems to be the best of both worlds – a technologically-advanced and connected handheld that's tailor-made for gamers.

You could have said the same thing about the DS compared to the PSP.

N64 ports? Tired franchises?

Well all right.

Why does this read like an old PSP/DS article from when both those systems debuted?

Because it IS an old PSP/DS article from when they both debuted.
Just the names have been changed.

I guess people are still in denial about the 21 million copies NSMB sold. Tired, worn, and inherently successful.

OPs avatar is perfect for this article.

I love this argument. I imagine in 2005 IGN probably wrote the same exact paragraph only writing PSP instead of Vita and DS instead of 3DS.

Man, IGN stepped up their game. Now they're starting to write off even the iPhone and Android despite their clear domination of marketshare. Love this sort of cognitive dissonance that goes on with Sony fanboys.

Yeah OP, didn't you know that each Vita purchase is worth twice as many points as a 3DS purchase?

IGN are just doing the math.

It's always possible. I guess we'll see. It would be nice if both systems had been released before making such claims though.

Why are they underestimating Nintendo? I think they're going to come back with sales and a better game library next year.

LOL, nobody gives a shit about Vita outside GAF. The system will quickly die like the Go.
Actually there have been many polls/survey's in Japan where it consistently comes out as the most anticipated item over the 3DS and other competition in general. Japan definitely wants it and I think it'll be big there, it remains to be seen the rest of the world though.

No, they actually did:

and even if you were to pit them against each other, Vita is still destined to sell better.

This sounds like something they would have said about PSP vs DS.

It is. Word for word actually. If you replaced the system names, it would be the exact same thing.

In my opinion the Ps3 should be the top seller. Amazing exclusives, great PSN downloads, free online play with a lot of bells and whistles, a chargeable controller, and a ton of options for music, movies, and media. It's also a a blu-ray player! It really is the best system out there.

What happened?

Japanese Polls don't really mean a whole lot....

I really like the PS Vita but I'm much more concerned for its success in the long term than I am for the 3DS. It's a beautiful piece of hardware but, I don't know, I think it will be mostly overlooked by publishers. I'll still be there day one though...

This was said about the PSP actually back in the day, and the same rings true for Vita. If 300 dollars didn't work for the 3DS, it sure as hell won't work for the Vita.

Except for Japan they'll buy it

Does the PSP have a touch screen interface similar to the iPod Touch?

Seriously folks. As I've said before, the competition for the Vita is going to come from the iPod Touch more than anything. Disagree all you want.

$250 didn't stop the Ipod Touch from selling.

This is one of those articles that's just stupid whether it's right or wrong. And yes, it does read like PSP vs DS.

Anyway, this thread is destined to turn into a fanboy war, so I better go make some popcorn. *runs*

So you're saying the Vita is REALLY going to bomb?

I always found it weird whenever I looked at IGN that the sony and microsoft sections were obviously ran / managed by massive Sony / Microsoft fanboys (this article coming from the Sony section is no surprise) but the Nintendo section of IGN seemed to actively hate Nintendo.

Gaming is better off if Vita sells more. Then we have games for a platform that is not only technically superior, but also offers better game play possibilities on a much stronger network backbone. Best of all worlds. I still don't think the Vita will outsell the 3DS though.

You can say they said the same thing with the PSP vs DS, but this time Vita actually has a bunch of advantages over the 3DS.

Big One said:
No but neither does Vita

Vita is arguably better. It has a multi touch front and back panel.

3DS is not going to take down the Vita with N64 ports, but phones are going to take over the industry with 16-bit knockoffs and flash game ports!
