one of the worse things I hear, this hurts the actual devs, but peeps use this as a weapon. Don't like something? buy it used, enjoy the game, it could be your GOTY but because it may have been for a short time PS4/Xbox exclusive, buy used. like this is total dumb shit. We should be above this dumb drama.

Do you have a problem with people buying used games in general, or just people who buy used games when they would've otherwise bought them new to spite a developer?

If a game is used, that means someone bought it new at some point. They got their support. They aren't entitled to any more than that sale (besides DLC).

It's your choice as the consumer to purchase the media in the form you want. Used, new, digital, physical, doesn't matter.

It's not dumb drama, it's a matter of choice.

It does come across as kinda spiteful sometimes. Like "I'm gonna play your game, but only when you won't make any money from it!"

It's called voting with your wallet. Don't like how the vote shakes out? Tough.

Or.... could be that every other version of the game, including the PC version will be dirt cheap at the time of launch. It's just good fiscal sense NOT to throw your money down the drain.

I'm totally cool with people buying used games (although I've never purchased a game second-hand in my life*), but I agree with you...when it's used as a weapon towards a developer, it comes off as incredibly childish and it's really disappointing to see on this forum.

*Edit - Wait! I take it back/! I bought a handful of used NES games in the early 90's. And if I ever start collecting NES games in the future (which I'm heavily considering), obviously I'll be doing that again.

I don't know man. If your budget conscience buying used makes a while lot more sense. I typically buy a handful of games new when they come out of its something I'm really looking forward to. Otherwise if you wait a couple months you can usually get it for less than half of what it would be new. I'd rather wait on some games and be able to play more.

I mean, that's the point. It is meant to be spiteful.

Typically it is said about games where the publisher is doing something questionable, so someone will say that. They want to say, play MGSV, but not support the microtransactions or development practices of Konami directly.

This is literally the only reason I ever see it used on GAF. It's so condescending and annoying. And you can be guaranteed that the majority of people who say it have no plans on buying it all.

I like buying used because there tends to be a good return period if I don't like it. shrug

No, voting with your wallet is not buying or playing the game. By buying it used you're still contributing to the publisher indirectly, you're just doing so while also being very childish about it on the internet.

I cringe when I look at most used or rented discs. I can't bring myself to buy used most of the time.

If I don't buy it new, or get it as a gift or something, I usually wait until it's on sale or try to be the first one to borrow it from the library.

I don't think OP meant it as buying used is bad. I think he meant it as buying used because it was exclusive on another platform and in the minds of some people, use "buying it used" as a "fuck you" to the developer.

What fantasy land do you live in where developers share your bank account? Voting with your wallet means making the best purchasing decision for your needs.

If it saves me money, i'll buy used. I wouldn't buy used as an act of defiance, I just buy what's best for me as a consumer.

Me and my friends borrow each other's games instead of buying our own copies. We are literally stealing from the developers.

They're businesses. Not your friends.

If I'm interested in playing a game but don't want to pay full price for it, either because I don't think it's worth the value the developers are asking for it, or - if for whatever reason - I don't want to give the publisher money, I'll buy used.

Sure, if I was doing it for all the niche games from small studios I claim to love, I'd be worthy of criticism, but I usually get games like that on day one.

If I could go back in time and buy Just Cause 3 (PS4) used, for example, I would.

I'll take a hefty assumption that it won't be hurting the developers bottom line if they are using it in that context. Since they probably wouldn't buy the game to begin with. While at the same time, giving the initial buyer more dosh to purchase another new title.

Is this about Tomb Raider 2?
I wouldn't do that, but I understand why others would. A year is not a short time when you really want something.

Personally I liked the first, I bought it on PS3 and again on PS4 both times for full price, but no way in hell am I paying full price for this one. I'm picking it up once it's under $25 on PSN. That's my own personal limit that I'd feel comfortable with. I've waited a year, I can wait longer.
The money will go to the right places, but they won't get what they would have gotten had they not made such a shitty deal with MS.
I can only assume that MS' money can recoup some of it. If it didn't - Square Enix fucked up. Their fault.

In the end no matter how vindictive or petty or stupid - people can and will do whatever they want with their money. Let 'em.

In the instance where a customer is trying to send a clear message to a company that they feel is taking them for granted, is it fairer to say that they will wait for it to be on sale, or to show up for free with some subscription service, but not buy it used which means that the game most likely was sold already and returned?

Voting with your wallet usually means you abstain from something to make a point. But if you want to keep thinking you're not helping publishers by buying their game used, which keeps their prices up, please go ahead. Also make sure to discuss it a lot with your friends after you play that used copy, that doesn't help the game at all.

I rarely buy used unless I'm horribly LTTP on a game or get an amazing deal on a used copy. I might break that rule for color splash since I can't fairly shit on it until I play it but I can't justify helping fund another one of these sticker star abominations I got fooled last time.

I only hate it when it's used as some sort of obnoxious "protest" to spite devs. "FUCKING LAZY DEVS, I'm not going to give them money for their SHITTY game... but I def want to waste money want to play it tho." Otherwise, if it's people just saying that they don't think it'll be quality for it's price or to their liking, then more power to them. With digital prices getting cheaper nowadays, I think most people would prefer to buy things that go on sale.

It's petty vindictive bullshit. That people do it isn't even the wurst part (pbviously can buy/not buy as they choose, for whatever reason), it's that they'll present it to you in the form of some righteous protest or grand proclamation.

Yes, you're a petty teen that holds grudges. Congrats.

Interesting, as I just stopped by the local game store to check out their used selection. And I'm starting to think it's a dying prospect for one simple reason - if you wait a couple months the games you want are probably going to be on sale for less than you'd pay for a physical used copy. For example I recently grabbed AC Brotherhood digitally during a PS store sale and FC Primal during the Amazon Prime sale - both were there used for more than I paid for new/digital games. Granted this is just one store but the situation is probably similar elsewhere. Just waiting and checking for PS Store and Amazon sales seems a much better strategy than buying used these days.

I don't see an issue with it if you're financially challenged ( I know families where the only way they can afford the hobby is to buy everything second hand, which made the online pass period particularly fucked up), other wise you're being provided a service that isn't owed to you that people pour years of effort into, pay up and stop being cheap. Personally if I can help it I wouldn't buy anything used be it a game, a car or whatever. I find it utterly discusting as a neat freak borderline OCD person. People don't take care of their stuff at least not in a manner that is up to my standards.

I've bought 95% used games over the past 21 years as an "adult" (17+)

Companies have kept making better and more impressive games over that time so I'm not particularly worried.

The "I'll wait for a sale" and "I won't preorder" are worse in most cases.

Used sales can be turned into new sales with lack of traded copies, or sequels and DLC if available. Plus an used copy was a new copy at some point.

Not preordering makes for ordering less games, less interest from retailers (if Gamestop barely orders, Best Buy will order less or none), less orders in general; of which some smaller publishers end sonetimes not having their games carried by some retailers.

Waiting for sales mixes that on top or waiting for retailers to lower price, which in most cases is the result of not selling initial stock and they for sure won't order more.

Again, these companies don't share my back account. They aren't calling around on my behalf to hook me up with sweet jobs or get me into social circles. They don't owe me squat, and I certainly do not owe them squat either. I am not responsible for their progression. I personally buy all of my games new (quite a few on sale if I can), but I have friends who don't make the kind of disposable cash that they can just blow their loads on corporate greed schemes.

Buying used is a bad way to send the message. How would the dev even know how mad you are? Have to find those questionable CD keys to really rub it in their awful dev faces.

I don't have a problem with buying used stuff. It is more cost effective for the consumer. If you want people to pay for new copies, you can try to sell new copies cheaper over time to combat it a bit. Nintendo keeps their first party titles crazy high, in many cases the same full retail year(s) after release. I can't fault anyone that buys Nintendo games used due to that. If the item you are selling isn't a consumable, you should expect it will end up being sold and resold. Vehicles, Furniture, Guns, Boats, DVD's etc.
