Early PS4 adopters could feel slighted and burned by Sony. That could affect their goodwill and future console purchases.

First of all they will continue to get the games.. It is not like Horizon, Sony Bend's new game, TLG are not coming to PS4 nor will Multiplats stop coming to PS4. Okay let us assume they get slighted and do not purchase PS5 as a result.. Which console can they purchase since all consoles will get all the multiplats?

The only scenario where it could affect Sony is if everyone is like fk it.. PC gaming is where its at I am done with consoles scenario... and yeah that is not happening anytime soon.

They can't let Sony proceed with their PS4K plans without something to counter it. There is no doubt in my mind a new Xbox One will go head to head with the PS4K but as Spencer suggests this needs to be quite an upgrade over the existing model.

I disagree, if they stick with Xbox One as it is now (slim models and all that are fine too so long as its the same capabilities) for a minimum of 5 years total while Sony starts this incremental upgrade cycle most people don't seem to be fans of....then many people might jump right back to Microsoft for the fourth Xbox's launch in 2018 or 2019.

Ditch the terrible name, forget about having the lower number than PlayStation and just name it the Xbox 3.

Make it twice as fast with double the memory, no Kinect, 500GB SSD for $499 or less.

Totally sounds like back-pedaling after seeing the reactions to the PS4K rumors. MS was the first one to talk about smaller upgrades and now they're suddenly talking about no 1.5 and proper generational shifts instead.

3. PS4K slow uptake, Xbox 2 release and promise it will be the only Xbox 2 for whole generation, people who like traditional console buy Xbox two instead

Xbox 2 wont exist in a bubble - The scope of the games it gets will still be determined by PS4.5 and PS5 So MS not updating their console changes nothing.

So Microsoft will take Nintendo's route. Kill the box in 4 years and release another one and hopes it does better.

Again...people seem to be skimming the actual quote if they think that. Read the last line of the quote in the OP.

He hasn't said no to a mid-gen upgrade. Unless I'm reading it wrong, he thinks it'll be more of a substantial upgrade than what he thinks Sony has planned.

Yeah, I think it's just opportune wording. Given the current specs of the consoles, if they bring up the hardware from the Xbone to equaling the PS4.5, they will technically have added more than Sony did. It's a nice PR spin like what Sega did way back when.

My guess they don't want to associate with the Xbox One name. Naming it something else would allow them to restart. Games will come to the new console and Xbox One just like at the beginning we got 360 and Xbox One games.

I would not be surprised if the next Xbox is Occulus ready and will play their library. To get above the min specs that would be more than a 1.5 upgrade, plus you could make it 4k ready.

Hang on. If people are sticking with Xbox One for five years what games will they play on it that is not on PS4? If they are getting the same games as PS4 where is the question of people thinking MS is supporting the console better and switching?

After reading the quote again I guess he just saying that their upgrade will be bigger than the ps4 upgrade. But this Gen sure is confusing I do not know what think about any if this anymore.

I have no idea why Sony needs a PS4k and the more Spencer speaks the less I understand about Xboxone.

C'mon Phil, full babyface turn, save console gaming.

It's just going to be a bigger jump than PS4 to PS4K and it'll be called Xbox Two or something. Really hope I'm wrong though.

I think he's actually just saying he hates the "1.5" moniker because it makes it sound like a half measure.

My guess is MS will let Sony move first with ps4k and see if they get any negative fallout from it.

Pretty much.

This is taken way out of context, combined with the click title, people are reading way too much into this.

Game Informer said:
I prefer Spencer's take on the matter. The advantage of consoles is they don't require frequent upgrading, and it seems Spencer feels the same way.

Phil Spencer said:
We see on other platforms whether it be mobile or PC that you get a continuous innovation that you rarely see on console. Consoles lock the hardware and the software platforms together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out for seven or so years, while other ecosystems are getting better, faster, stronger. And then you wait for the next big step function.

When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation.

Did I miss a recent development or is the Game Informer guy not caught up on recent events?

It's astonishing how much people hear what they want to hear. The head of the division basically just said there won't be an upgraded Xbox One.

Those people in the other thread who suggested Microsoft was ahead in their plans were making their own speculation into fact – wonder what their motivation was?

Xbone needs more a upgrade than PS4 but I guess the PS4 arch is easy to upgrade than Xbone arch.

Good point.

Im thinking MS is trying to put eyes on Sony and letting them take the lead with their iteration... which is the smartest move they could make. A PS4K would lock Sony into 8th gen (ish) for at minimum another 3 years, so if MS pumps the brakes and reassess after PS4K launches, they could put out an XB2 a bit more powerful a year or so later. They are obviously well aware they dont want to lose out on horsepower again, but I will be very interested to see what they do with their ESRAM situation, assuming they are going for full backwards compatibility with XB1

I can see myself doing that. Microsoft is trying to earn back goodwill at least.

As I pointed out earlier, they could easily go through with the plan and easily brand it as Xbox 2 then do another half jump in 3 years and call it Xbox 3.

For all intents and purposes, calling the console x.5 is terrible branding. They might as well take a cue from Apple and call it Xbox 1s and PS4s, instead of calling it Xbox 1.5 and PS 4.5.

So the plan is to be left even further behind than they already are ? Who can think this is a good idea. The idea of what the console space should be is evolving, for good.
I can't see Microsoft not responding.

They have to and this could be their chance to be on equal terms hardware wise. I'm fully aware this could be more expensive considering they are starting from further back but in my opinion this would be worth it.

They could always introduce a trade-in program to sweeten the deal.

No matter how hard I think about mid-gen refreshes I can only get behind that idea.

I took the push for UWP as a clear sign that iterative upgrades were the path forward.

That's just so sales don't plummet now.
They wouldn't have said jack in the first place if they were undecided.

Good point, could be damage control to avoid scaring possible buyers. Sony hasn't said a peep one way or another, but he has.

Sounds like they are still undecided about what the next console is even going to be.

So when he says "big numbers" he literally just means "big numbers". That would be amazingly funny.

Phil: "this is our upgrade Xbox1MILLION!"
"but Phil is the processor bigger?"
Phil:"the number is bigger!"

Sounds like marketing and semantics to me. Calling it Xbox 2 or with 'Xbox 1.5 internals'

They can't beat physics. They'll have access to the same tech as Sony do - 14/16nm isn't mature enough for big dies, so they cant leapfrog easily, unless they go balls out with CPU/GPU setup which would be really expensive (but lovely)

Yeah, I can't see Microsoft waiting out another 2 1/2 years while their 2 direct competitors have exciting new hardware on the market. If they were the market leader maybe, but definitely not in their current position.

"It performs" is such a weird statement. I exist. Yes. It performs. HOW it performs? (Btw, I am not saying it performs badly or well. I am just saying that it seems to me that its an incomplete sentence.

No, he did not. They certainly will never make a "new gen" box. They are all in on making their software and games carry forward. Whether they release this year or next or the year after, it will be an upgrade to what they have now, with current games being playable on it and the same OS.

wouldn't Xbox still be the weaker hardware at the end of that scenario? PS5 comes along as the 9th gen console and we're back at a power disparity.

can software developers even keep up with these rapid console upgrades? We are 3 years into this gen and developers are still strugling to deliver proper AAA games.
