Last month had a few amazing game surprises, and if anyone actually reads this and hasnt played through any of the featured games last month, go check out the voting list below. Sweet stuff. Also, last month sa the biggest voting participation this year, and a rise in thread activity, which I take as a good sign that our small thread here wont die out because of inactivity quite that soon :)

Have fun with another month of fantastic looking Indies, guys!

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Crimsonland - $13.99 (PC)
crimsonland_gameplay_5_1920x1080.png
http://store.steampowered.com/app/262830/
Thousands of aliens, giant spiders, mutant lizards, and more are on the attack - can you survive the onslaught? Crimsonland is a top-down shooter with a touch of RPG. Unlock over 30 weapons and over 50 perks from quirky to brutal. Complete the quest and show your skills in five survival modes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. Tales of Maj'Eyal - Free Basic version / $7 Deluxe Version (PC, Mac, Linux)
RycZUyF.jpg

http://te4.org/

This game is, and I am not saying this lightly, one of the best roguelikes I've ever played. I love these games, but the way the game is structured, how the mechanics come together, the incredibly satisfying loot improvement curve, the way how most characters play fundamentally different and just how much stuff there is to find and see... is mind boggling. The initial release was an older game, but its still frequently updated, so I'll just honor it by including it here again. The game is not super pretty and screenshots might not be overly convincing, but its fan-fucking-tastic.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Chronology - $9,99 (PC)
TQT3njb.png
http://store.steampowered.com/app/269330/
2D time travelling platforming puzzle game with gorgeous art, basically BraidXLimbo. These games have the tendency to have extremely easy or redundant puzzles and I am glad to report that this game actually feels refreshingly different the way it uses its mechanic during the course of the game. You can basically switch between 2 different time periods, in which small differences from the past might make a huge impact on the future. Obvious examples would be using terrain thats slightly different in the past, or moving a tree seed, so it will grow big in the future and can be used as a platform. However, those small examples do not represent the ingenuity with which some of those puzzles are created and this game definitely deserves to be looked at more thoroughly.
2. Pocket Robots Test Chamber - Free (PC, Browser)
WoYgKe8.png
http://echa.itch.io/pocket-robots-test-chamber
Pocket Robots Test Chamber has proven to be an (awesome) surprise. The basic idea is that you have a six interval programming set-up to command your robot to move left, right, and jump. And commands, Not commands, branching commands, it's quite complex and took a few levels for me to wrap my head around how the mechanics work.Don't be fooled by the simple style. This is a challenging inventive puzzle game that uses its programming mechanic in a variety of interesting ways.
2. Tobias and the Dark Sceptres - Free (PC)
Tobias_TIGSPost2.jpg
http://www.tobiasgame.co.uk/
This is incredible endearing, you probably all know the story about this game and how he developed it for 13 years, which also shows in the gameplay itself and how the gameplay mechanics and animations get gradually more intricate as the game goes on (which is incredibly interesting to watch), but the game itself is actually good, partly because it feels like it rarely relies too much on some design constraints and just runs with whatever the dev found interesting at that point in time. I didnt expect to say this after I played the game for a while, but this game doesnt only have an interesting backstory, its actually worth playing.
2. Hardline Gunner - Free alpha demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
HLGnewwalls.gif
http://lazorun.com/games/hlg/
Hardline Gunner may sport a minimalist style, but the action in the game's alpha demo is anything but. Each level offers a new challenge, from tight cramped corridors to open areas with bosses firing insane amount of projectiles to special tiles that boost you forward or slow your movement. Your small square is agile and fast, able to dash around, and quickly maneuver between bullets and missiles. Crates drop health and special weapons like homing rockets and spread shots, allowing you to change up your arsenal at the most opportune moment.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
2nd this. Great game, very likely gonna be on my game of the year list. With it coming out so close to Eidolon, I think both games compliment each other fairly well given how completely unlike the other they are but with a slightly similar art style.
Never even heard of that, but seems to be quite popular based on the fact you all shout at me to include it :p
Added it to the OP and bought it just now.
Why are you guys saying its so good? Just looks like a minimalistic shooter.
If you're into speedrun kind of stuff like Super Meat Boy, Mirror's Edge time trials, Cloudbuilt, kind of stuff, where you try to get better at replays, this is good. Has an awesome soundtrack, has cute aesthetic, and really tight levels. Strafing, jumping, twitchy, gotta go fast 60fps. It's really cheap, so can't hurt giving it a go.
Yeah, I already bought it, but just from impressions and videos I dont quite get yet why people are SO in love with it yet to call it GOTY material =p
I'll check it out eventually, but for the Meatboy comparison, the best thing about Meatboy wasnt necessarily that the levels were speedrunnable, but how snappy the gameplay and restarts were, the steam friendlist integration for speedruns and the marvellously crafted level designs which were short but challenging to make me redo these levels over and over again. Plenty of speedrun games, but rarely these games are quite as addicting.
Though to be fair, those aspects cant be judged from videos alone, so I am looking forward to check it out myself ;)
Yeah, that's what I mean to say by the Meatboy comparison with the snappy gameplay and restarts. You can complete the levels, but it's so good that you want to retry just for kicks. Hey, if people are calling it GOTY material, I can see that cause I'm into this kind of thing. There isn't something quite like this.
August 21st will be the one year anniversary of Indie Game Enthusiast. I've been thinking of how to move forward and what I could do in the next year to continue improving my blog. This whole debacle with Toucharcade had made me realize I love discussing games as much as I love spreading the word and writing about them, so I've decided that I'm going to look into starting an IGE forum.
It's been suggested a few times to me to start a forum, but I never entertained the idea, never felt like I needed to expand and really I'm not sure I have the dedication or experience to maintain a forum. But I am reconsidering the idea now. Need to do some serious research, but I think it's a worthwhile endeavor to pursue
Dont do it unless you have someone that will be dedicated to taking care of the technical side of things, meaning registration issues, server stuff, uploads etc. If you dont have someone, dont even try, it will only tarnish your reputation in the long run if you have no one to handle this, not to mention moderation. I set up a forum for my university a few years ago, and the technical side of things (even though it was a predone bulletin board), was still enough of a time waster that I spent more time on administrative issues than actual content.
I pondered that idea again and again over the years as well for Indies especially, but... its really way more work than it seems at first and I wouldnt do it unless having at least a 3-4 man team to start out with that I can fully rely on supporting the endeavor for 6 months (meaning enough time to search for more volunteers) and one of those knowing a thing or two about running the tech side of a forum.
Edit: just realized I've been posting in these threads for over a year, since July 2013. Happy to have found such a great community of friends among IndieGAF!
Also, best of luck to whatever you cook up, but spreading yourself thin across multiple communities will quickly wear on your time a LOT. Dont overwork yourself and think of your studies.
*raises hand* ... but I guess I already gave that away.
Eidolon, Day 1: discovered a small wooden tower not far from where I started, scored a pair of binoculars and used them to watch some deer in a wooded area. So far the wildlife has been docile. Gathered lots of tinder. Ate a lot of mushrooms and stared at the starry night sky for a while before catching some shut-eye.
Day 2: A compass. A map. A fishing rod. The small pond nearby afforded a few fish. After quite a hike, I managed to determine my location and make some use of the map, but at the cost of an injury. Tomorrow I head north for Bellevue and hope to find some kind of antibiotic for my wound.
I posted about We Slay Monsters last month:
I picked this game up tonight (apparently I am the first person to buy the game and won a t-shirt, do you see how much I support indies?!?) and I find it quite enjoyable. The cards all have different elements so you can light an enemy on fire to leave a burning debuff, freeze them with ice, stun them with a bowling ball (yes, a bowling ball), teleport them away with a staff attack and whatever the fuck the green ball of goo does. Combining the cards into traditional poker hands will make attacks stronger, or in some cases like a Full House, unleash a special attack for massive damage. When you combine multiple elements of cards, all of them apply to the enemy so things can combo in pretty cool ways.
The couple of levels I played tonight were small(ish) and are actually similar to Desktop Dungeons. The enemies scaled from level 1-10 with you starting at level 1 each time. You have to pick your fights appropriately to make sure you maximize XP from mobs before you outlevel them. Each dungeon has a boss at the end which have a couple different attacks not seen on the regular enemies. The boss I fought was a scarecrow that could fear me, reduce my stats and summoned crows which made for an interesting change from the regular enemies.
The Academy features upgrades in a manner you would expect given that most roguelikes are shifting toward a persistent upgrade mechanic these days. You spend the gold you pick up in dungeons on upgrading the starting gear/stats/spells/etc of your fodder adventurer.
I would say if you like poker and roguelike mechanics, check the game out for sure. Even if you aren't a huge poker fan but like card-based combat it might be fun for you! The game is currently in early access and well on the way to being Greenlit.
Just wait a while, eventually a fish will catch on. Seems entirely random so it could be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute.
Make sure the cork lands in the water... and then do what fishermen do. Wait. :) Right-click again when the time comes.
Thanks for the advice, Toma. Sounds like it's an undertaking I have neither the time nor expertise to handle, at least for now.
Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
I noticed Rime Berta wasn't in the list for indie games this month, so I thought I'd make a quick post.
Rime Berta is a Japanese SRPG developed by Next Soft+ and localized/published by Playism.
You play as Livia, a girl who ventures into a mysterious tower after her village is plagued with an incurable illness. The tower is said to hold an artifact capable of granting any wish.
Once inside, she befriends a "puppet", an artificial sentient creature that fights by her side.
The gameplay in Rime Berta is very similar to Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics. Combat takes place on a square-based grid, and each puppet you add to your army belongs to a class. As puppets level up, they can learn new skills, and you can customize which skills they bring into battle to suit your playstyle.
You can also promote puppets to more powerful classes by mastering specific skills.
Rime Berta is going to be available on Playism on August 4th for $14.99, and we're doing a 20% launch discount.
http://playism-games.com/games/rimeberta/
The RPS impressions sounded so good. The game is at the top of my wishlist but I'm going to wait till it releases. Seems like the kind of game best experienced with a complete story
Ditto for me too, as cool as it sounds right now I generally let story based games leave early access before I check them out (same reason I haven't got Wasteland yet.)
150k for something that honestly looks like any other RPGmaker project? I'm sorry but the screenshots and spritework don't look very appealing at all.
How can they make such a neat engine and then have it look so bad for the actual ingame screenshots?
Its not in the list, because we gather the games one month prior, meaning all the games released in august will be covered in the september thread, the reason for that being that I dont have time to continually add games throughout the month and then we'd end up with games only getting half of the time in the OP than the others, which also means less chance of players seeing and playing them. If you do a properly formatted post (see OP), then it will be automatically included next month :) (I have a program, Toma Bot, that searches these threads for posts that are formatted in that way and creates the next game list for me)
