February was the month of small, yet polished experiences! Plenty of smaller games that surprised us more than we thought possible, which is also reflected in the voting. March looks a bit meatier and hopefully we see more impressions to have some more people participating in the vote than last month.

Additionally, minichange in the title formatting to make a distinction to last years threads.

Other than that, the current month has 51 games in the released section and 86 in the future section, so have fun guys with another month of Indies!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure:

Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK

DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK

DESCRIPTION TEXT

Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.

If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.

If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.

Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):

1. Olympia Rising - Free Online Demo/ (PC, Mac, Linux)
Gif1_zpsa60abfcf.gif

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paleozoic/olympia-rising

The visuals are charming, the animations smooth and fluid. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect is when you build a smooth flow through an area, leaping from one enemy to the next, tripling jumping around platforms to continue your chain. It just feels satisfying and the solid responsive controls means such skill rests in the player's own ability. I think Olympia Rising is a promising title with great potential, appealing to both the fans of speedrunning and platformers who enjoy the thrill of moving through an environment with swiftness and precision, and the fans of exploration and old school challenge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Lyne - $3 (PC, Mac, Linux, IOS, Android)
screen568x568.jpeg
http://www.lynegame.com/
While LYNE is also available on PC, I'm convinced that the best way to play it is on a touchscreen. The smooth minimal interface hides a massive wealth of content. The puzzle mechanics themselves are simple - connect various paths between nodes - but the infinite levels and the increasingly challenging puzzles make it an enjoyable addictive experience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3. simian.interface - Free/PWYW (Browser, PC, Mac)
simian_6.png

http://www.vested-interest.co/simian/

An excellent month for abstract Flash games, it seems. This one is a simple, but very stylish puzzle game that plays around with perspective on a 2D field. Heavily inspired by Fez, methinks. Starts out innocently and goes to some weird and awesome places (you're trying to reboot a monkey, I think? also, drugsbananas and behaviourism?). I finished it in a single sitting. Soundtrack keeps you pumped all the way through.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3. Magnetized - Free, $2.99 (PC, Browser, IOS)
screen568x568.jpeg
http://www.cloud-macaca.com/2013/04/magnetized-available-on-gamejolt.html
Stylistically, it is very similar to a game like *ahem* Impulse (obligatory and required Impulse cameo as sacrifice to avoid any other impulsive thread havoc) . The mechanic is quickly explained: You're a little dot that floats in a straight line and you have to navigate through a level by activating the magnetic pull which influences you're trajectory. It's free to play in your browser and, well, I've kinda been going at it for for at least 45 minutes now and it simply hooks the player.
5. The Banner Saga - $24.99 (PC, Mac)
ss_8cb2ac8d54d819ef8d2d50e5aaa45e85d50ca80f.1920x1080.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/237990
An epic role-playing game inspired by Viking legend. Hand-painted landscapes portray a world eerily suspended in perpetual twilight. Cities and towns begin to crumble into chaos. Heroes abandon their hearths and homes to traverse the snowy countryside, gaining allies along the way to help battle a strange, new threat. Decisions have consequences; wise choices must be made when conversing with possible allies during intricately crafted dialogues. Turn-based strategy brings tactical challenge in hand-animated battle sequences to gamers waiting to re-experience classic adventures and tactics.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

5. Magicians & Looters - €5,49 (PC)
OxKg0M8.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/magicians-and-looters

Its an action platformer with RPG and Metroidvania elements and also actually very apt at what it does. The initial 15 minutes are really bland and I wasnt too sold on the combat itself, but past the starting area, I was very surprised to see plenty of hidden areas, metroidvania style map progression, interesting room/enemy setups that require some mildly challenging strategies, switches, shortcuts, a magic system, equipment, a level up system and 3 different characters between which you can switch to reach certain areas of the map. It might be short, but its certainly enjoyable.

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

ezzhhYL.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/271820/?cc=us

Its not the most complex of card games but it is nice and snappy to play and the overall package is full of lovely art in both the cards and the surrounding scenes as you wander across this nighttime island city, which basically seems like a halfbreed of that game on FF8 and a match 3 puzzler At less then £2, the entire game is pretty nuts with the sheer variety of different scenes and characters you come across. It feels like a product that costs 4x to 5x it's value at least.

Another month, another batch of great indie games.

How would you even know if the OP has no games yet? I mean, maybe there were no releases... or just copy pasted side scrolling adventures, because thats all what Indies are, right? :p

Did we miss Card City Nights? Because I thought it was a pretty neat little card game with deeper strategy than I would've expected. Didn't see it mentioned in the OP for February or March but it might've gotten a mention in the rest of the February thread (in which case consider this my +1!).

Also: Praise the Toma-bot.

Just to mention that again, without the program this thread would have taken me 10-15 hours instead of the 4 it took me today. So please, please, please follow the formatting in the OP ô.o

Ether One is a first person adventure that deals with the fragility of the human mind.

There are two paths in the world you can choose from. At it’s core is a story exploration path free from puzzles where you can unfold the story at your own pace.

There is also a deeper, more adventurous path in which you can complete complex puzzles to restore life changing events of the patients history in order to help the validation of their life.

The choice is left to you.

Excellent top five for last month. Check out those games, people.

Yes, I think Foul Note praised it but nobody did a post. Gimme a minute or two.

The formatting for not yet released games would be:

Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK

DESCRIPTION TEXT

Also: We dont include games that didnt release yet in the "released" section, so the way its meant to work is that you/someone else would have posted the "not yet released" formatting in the last thread, so it gets automatically picked up for the not yet released part of the march thread, but I'll add it manually now.

It was mentioned in february here:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=101181935&postcount=703

But since no one made a properly formatted post about it (see post above yours), it wasnt included. I'll include it manually now.

New thread!

Okay, continuing that discussion from the last thread. Since about 95% of the games in the OP were from my posts, do you think I should limit what games I post about? Is it too much? I mean, I could try to limit it to the most interesting games, but we're talking about indies here. They're all interesting.

Also, for your Kickstarter fans, March is going to be huge. Path of Shadows, Witchmarsh, MTBFreeride, and many many more. I'm maintaining the 2014 Kickstarter thread so drop by if you're an indie dev with an upcoming campaign or just found some promising project that needs some attention

I'll wait till page 2 to the Screenshot Saturday posts so this first page isn't too cluttered

Hey, Toma, not sure if you want to include it or not, since I'm sure it was featured already, but MTBFreeride has a new version and it's like a whole new game now. Much more polished, better controls, better optimized, new wingsuit mode, etc.

Yeah, I can highly recommend The Banner Saga. Incredible game with a unique artstyle and seriously depressing story with lots of dialogue choices that have serious consequences.

Just a heads-up that The Wild Eternal is listed twice. We definitely appreciate the link but don't need any special treatment. ;)

March 2013

Before I joined GAF, I was interested in indie games. It was more of a passing interest, spawned by my time with Facade, Nitronic Rush, and Warning Forever. I mainly played freeware games and flash games. But it was finding this thread, and this community, that turned that interest into a passion for these easily overlooked, often overshadowed, yet always intriguing games and the incredible experiences that await beneath the brightly exposed surface of AAA games and more popular critically lauded indie games.

Since my annoyingly incessant questions about game specs when I first started posting in the Indie threads, I've probably contributed in these threads more than any other forums I frequent. But it's Toma who started these threads, keeps them going month after month, and he should be congratulated for his hard work and dedication to helping and exposing these wonderful games

giphy.gif

So a year has passed and what year it was. From the colossal success of games like Rogue Legacy and Gone Home to the smaller yet no less enjoyable titles such as Outer Wilds, Factorio, Westerado, and dozens more, we've seen the incredible quality and diversity that indie gaming has to offer and continues to offer as we progress through 2014 and beyond.

So keep up the great work IndieGaf, especially Toma, and let's see where these threads stand another year from now

I mean, I could try to limit it to the most interesting games, but we're talking about indies here. They're all interesting.

It took me a bit of time, but I think the way we do it currently works still for the current amount of games. I went through some impressions/reviews and images or played them myself to judge them and simply excluded some that seemed less interesting than the others or were SO super early in Alpha that I didnt feel it made much sense to include them yet. I mean you dont need to post EVERY game here either, if you think it might not be worth including, leave it out, if you are in doubt, post it and we'll either add it or I'll omit it myself.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add the KS thread. I added a link to the KS thread at the bottom of the first post. I've been meaning to include the adventure games thread there for ages already. Need to remember doing that.

MTBFreeride - Free alpha (PC, Mac, Linux)

Nah, its still Alpha/Beta. We'll stick with "Include first for Alpha/Beta, then a second time on full release.", otherwise we'll clog up the thread with games most here already know constantly.

So keep up the great work, especially Toma, and let's see where these threads stand another year from now

Haha, thanks for the nice words. Same goes to you, otherwise we wouldnt have much content in these threads lately or I would need to put in severely more time to fill them. And here is a fun thing you might want to read about :p

Anyone have impressions? Last I heard, it was kind of lacking in content

Still sort of the case. It has lots of trade goods etc, but its still missing balanced gameplay options as currently its mostly focussed on trade instead of piracy/combat and anything to make the game more intuitive/more fun to play. Seems like a decent base, but it definitely needs some more work and at least a basic tutorial ingame to tell the player whats in and what isnt. Remind me again in a few months and I'll check it out again.

Gang Beasts is already among the top 5 games on Steam Greenlight, new build releasing Friday
- The Incinerator / Furnace stage
- The Big Wheel stage
- AI enemies (in the Sandbox stage)
- Wincing/Grimacing (e.g. Gang Beast's eyes close briefly when hurt)
- Health bars (green/red bar to show the Gang Beast's current health when hurt)
- Additional sounds
Amazing that this game is only 0.0.1. I've seen full games that aren't as promising or as fun as the Gang Beats alpha. If you haven't been following the game, some awesome things that developers have planned:
- Construction site with breakable walls and floors
- Full single player campaign with levels and bosses
- Fights in the middle of traffic and on top of trains
- Moves like headbutts, elbows, ground kicks (basically street brawling moves)
- They're considering online multiplayer

Outstanding news. Not 100% sure the game needs a health bar, (what it does need is the ability to climb,) but new levels sound fantastic. I have seen the furnace level and it looks like it might be amusing.

Also, excellent OP Toma and Toma-bot, as the usual.

Well unlike more multiplayer fightng games (I'm lookin at you, Samurai Gunn), single player sounds like it's a big part of Gang Beasts. So I think the health bars wil be most important in those levels and boss fights

The decription for Lyne is wrong. It should be:

Deceptively simple, infinitely complex, LYNE is a minimalist puzzle game that will knot your brain as it calms your soul.Connect the shapes. Fill the board. Lose yourself in the interflowing paths of LYNE

A Story About My Uncle - 2014 (PC)

I have already played this game in November 2012. The alpha might still be somewhere on the Internet.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmDxko0htS0

I might still have it somewhere on my hard-drive. The game was good but I could not finish it because of some weird bugs.

Regarding the old version

by Team Gone North | Jan 22, 2014 |

As we move towards exciting times of releasing A Story About My Uncle in it’s new and improved form, you might notice that we no longer advertise the demo that was available for download earlier here on the site.

This is because we no longer feel that the demo is an accurate representation of the game. A lot has changed since then and we have added and updated tons of things in the game: prolonged and enhanced the story and narration, optimized and added levels to the game, reworked assets and characters among other things.

If you happen to have this old demo regardless, we provide some legacy support over at this page

Glad to see the new monthly thread, but what's the deal with his Lyne description?

Another simple concept executed very well. It's one of the more innovative one-button games I've seen. You have to guide a "pixel" safely from point A to point B without hitting any walls along the way. The trick is there are "magnet pixels" you can activate by clicking (the magnet pixel nearest to the pixel is the one that gets activated). When activated, the pixel's path is altered in the direction of the magnet pixel. Such a clever concept and again, executed with a ton of polish

That's so far from what Lyne actually is that I'm wondering if this was the description for something else?

Let me provide an alternate description in case the original got lost:

Lyne is a minimalist, well-polished puzzle game. The goal is to connect the endpoints on the playing field without two lines traveling over the same path. All nodes on the board have to be used, and some have to be incorporated multiple times before the board counts as completed. It ramps up nicely, has a zen aesthetic, and has loads of puzzles (including a daily puzzle set generator).

Gangbeasts - Free alpha (PC, Mac, Linux)
directlink_BhCoXsSCAAAtJYT.jpg%3Alarge.jpg

Gang Beasts is a Local Multiplayer Co-op Party Game with puppetlike character animations and brutal mêlée fighting referencing scenes from classic arcade Beat 'em ups such as Capcom's Final Fight series, Sega's Streets of Rage, Konami's Crime Fighters, and Technōs' Double Dragon and Renegade titles.

Yeah, I accidentally added the Magnetized description to Lyne. Even when I played Lyne for more than 8 hours,these stupid mistakes happen if you have 100,000 characters in front of you to sort out for this thread :p

Already changed though right before you posted after I read Wok's post :)

OP impressions, Action Painting Pro:
Its nothing you'll play for long, but its such a refreshing and totally weird concept that I cant help but fall in love with it, especially considering the weird meta comment it tries to make about balancing money, time, art and human abilities and craziness. Jump around, collect different powerups that change your brush and colors and just see how far you can go. I am also surprised at how many of those different power ups/music bits there are. I am sure you could even tweak these mechanics a little bit so that you end up creating images that look quite decent too, but for what it is, this is still a very interesting addition to the threads.

Oh and my Mona Lisa:
rqS2635.jpg

Finally got Nuclear Throne and it's so good. I had played the early Wasteland Kings prototype, and the Early Access game is even better. The controls are so responsive and the characters play so differently due to their special abilities. My favorite is the Chicken, since going in slow motion and slicing through a hailstorm of bullets is awesome

At first I thought the game might be on the easy side, but nope, I think this is the best action roguelite I've played since Teleglitch. I know the guys at Vlambeer are very much focused at establishing game feel and tone and they nailed that Nuclear Throne. Just shooting your weapons feel so satisfying and powerful and the gameplay is just very challenging and intense as you swap out guns, maneuver to better positions, and weave between bullets and enemies.

The charming visuals, the varied mutators and perks, the sheer number of weapons, and diverse enemies makes any time with the game a joy to play. It's the kind of game you can enjoy for short 20 minute attempts or sink hours into the experience.

We are barely in march and I already find stuff for april, bah. Some games I found on FreeIndiegam.es for next month and just played:

Labyrinth of Keys - Free (PC, Browser)
A71VMLq.png

http://mattarod.com/games/KagiNoMeiro2x.html

An exploration-action-puzzle-platformer inspired by La-Mulana and just as hard. The biggest challenge doesnt come from defeating certain enemies, but from grasping the game mechanics and understanding that nothing here might be what it seems like. Solving puzzles based on vague hints, exploring the world, failing due to not understanding and finally reaching the true exit is a truly challenging and mystifying affair.

Museum of Parallel Art - Free (PC, Mac, Linux Browser)
12NfVYu.png

http://technobeanie.com/stuff/games/Museum/

Visiting the virtual Museum of Parallel Art is a very special experience you'll share with someone. You'll express your thoughts and feelings towards art with cards, or try to view the world as your peer and guess the cards he or she has played. Comparing cards will prompt conversation and is sure to connect you two.

The Way of Yiji - Free (PC, Browser)
dBmrRVo.jpg

http://tchem.itch.io/the-way-of-yiji

The Way of Yiji focus the exploration and contemplation of its visual and sound environment. You are a samurai, that after an attack on your village and the death of your beloved, must carry your child, Yiji, to the Temple of the Lively Light. Poisoned by an arrow, the samurai will die. The game is an immersion in the teachings of Light. The only enemy is time itself.

Javel-ein - Free (PC, Browser)
2iuUOV3.png

http://managore.wordpress.com/javel-ein/

Javel-ein was made by me for Ludum Dare #28, where the theme was you only get one. In Javel-ein, you only get one javelin. Using it together with your magnificent wit and skill, you must defeat all the creatures in each level before proceeding through the door. Javel-ein contains 60 levels split into four chapters. Each chapter introduces new mechanics, greater difficulty and a unique and terrible boss.

This also reminded me that Hofmann was hyping up and anticipating The Way of Yiji for like 3 months back then and now we still missed the release.

So, one of my most anticipated games, and one that I regularly think about for some reason, is Night in the Woods, which was kickstarted back in November. In KRZ-fashion, they released a 'supplemental' called The Longest Night (free on their website) which I finally got around to playing.

To cut to the chase, I think it's a marvelous appetiser that also - and this is very important - works as a self-contained intimate play. The art style is really something unique and it is paired with a wonderful soundscape that really sets the mood for the experience. The dialogue is witty, brash and provoking, thoughtful, endearing - it reminds me of a lot of things: Of KRZ, of course, and of absurdist literature, of comics like Calvin & Hobbes or Peanuts, but in spite of that, it absolutely possesses an identity of its own.

What is discussed in this episode? Well, nothing less than the mythology of this world I would say; the quirky and gritty and sad tales that are passed on time and time again in this alternate reality that feels all to familiar. And the best thing about it? Let me tell you: I'm getting all serious talking about it, but in fact, it is told effortlessly, with great playfulness, levity, but never not earnest at the same time. If the final game resonates as much with me as this little scherzo, then I have something truly special to look forward to.

OP impressions Astrovoid:
Fun and quick arcade highscore shooter. If anyone is in the mood to beat my highscore (which was 2800 on the screenshot below before the game crashed), log in as "guest" to add your scores to the official leaderboards. I have 1400 in the weekly leaderboard or something. Anyway, fun game with some well balanced mechanics, too bad it just crashed on me but recommendable none the less if you want some highscore arcade action

..and Banished:
Much has been said already, and I'll quickly repeat myself. Its a very pretty and charming city builder that works on a funamdental level and is also VERY enjoyable to play for a few hours, but severely lacks content. It is still impressive for a 1 man project, however. If this had a proper campaign and/or scenarios and more options that open up as you go along, this would be further up my recommendation list, otherwise I cant really recommend grabbing it for $20, considering what other games you can grab for those $20. Monaco syndrome.
