We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
ss_de34fe8d562d348ec75476764034e884732262d0.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/289130/
It's a 4X game made by the same developers of Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless, so it's a pretty easy game to get into the genre if you don't have any previous experience. While the universe is the same of the previous games you don't need to have played them to actually enjoy it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. Big Pharma - 19,99$ during Beta (PC)
osfFvue.jpg

http://www.bigpharmagame.com/

Part business sim, part logistics puzzle. It’s one thing to work away in the lab perfecting new formulas, but converting the ‘sciency stuff’ into cold hard cash means bringing an engineering and business mind to the problem. Factory space is expensive, and those fancy new agglomerators and centrifuges don’t always slot nicely together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4. Her Story - $5.99 (PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone)
Her-Story-Screenshot-Red-Blouse-D.jpg
http://www.herstorygame.com
<b>Her Story</b> is a crime fiction game with non-linear storytelling, starring Viva Seifert, actress and one half of the band Joe Gideon and the Shark. Sit in front of a mothballed desktop computer and explore its police database of video footage. Type search terms, watch the clips where she speaks those words and piece together her story.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. You must build a boat - £3.99 (WIN/MAC/STEAM)
ss_4360b5d43b1821603f0c96127e6a8d7cfd9fbe3d.600x338.jpg

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4. Game Over - Free (Browser)
3IhOZPol.png
http://studioblackflag.com/GameOver.html
Game Over is an abstract journey in a colorful world. It's an Escher-esque Isometric Platformer where the perspective is constantly tricking you. Game Over is a chill and simple game, yet it invites you to wear your speedrunner costume in order to find all the shortcuts hidden in it's tortuous levels. Game Over is in early beta, do not hesitate to share any bugs or feedback!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

8.-20. (Still great games here)
Guns, Gore & Cannoli
Crest
Duck Game
Into the Light
Titan Souls
Adventures of Pip
Antumbra
Derive
There is no Game
Void Vikings
Subnautica
Ronin
Dolly

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.

GAF Thread: Freeware Games
So many free games are out there and so many are just really good games that a large majority of people will never play. From developers with large portfolios of freeware games, to free alphas and betas, to the hundreds and hundreds of entries for game jams such as Seven Day Roguelike, Seven Day FPS, Ludum Dare, and others, to the talented work of Digipen students, there's just an astounding amount of quality free games to play and enjoy that this thread tries to uncover.

Where do you pick the indie games from and do they need to be finished games?

Anywhere and any game is fine as long as someone would recommend it or is genuinely interested in it. "Picking" them is a collaborative community effort, if you feel something should be included, post about it here with the 1st post guidelines in mind (there is a specific formatting that allows me to include everyones suggestion automatically with a program).

Content is in, there are most likely some errors and formatting issues. If you find anything, post about it here, and I'll get it fixed by tomorrow.

You might want to hold of the thanks below after you see my post below :( lol - cheers though happy to help out!!!!

I felt bad for not getting stuff in earlier as baddy was almost carrying this thread on his own - on his hols too!!!! - Cheers baddy!!!

Thanks again for your help :) Thread would be quite a bit more empty without your last minute help.

A couple of the free games i put up have ended in the upcoming section

Spooky's House of Jump Scares & Time Clickers

Is that because i put FREE in capitals?

Also i must have missed putting in a price and platform for choice chamber which should be £6.99 and WIN and I missed a £ for Inferno 2 - 33.99 (WIN) - so both are also in the upcoming section - sorry my bad :(

This month is going to be another big one for indies.

- Volume
- Calvino Noir
- RymdResa
- Ink (from the devs of Frog Sord and Super III)
- OlliOlli 2
- Airscape
- Duskers
- Shadowrun: Hong Kong
- Party Hard
- Fran Bow
- maybe Beyond Eyes
- GRIP Kickstarter

Got my sights set on Volume and I'm definitely backing GRIP

Simply stated, they’re not easy. Progressing will be difficult, but you have the appropriate tools at your disposal. Everything you need to proceed is — or has been — provided.
Look for clues and patterns to build on what you have learned. Remember what you have seen — for no detail is too subtle or insignificant.
As you explore deeper, you’ll begin to unravel the enigma of The Guides.

Before each battle, you assemble a group of up to four heroes, who then fight hundreds of enemies simultaneously, on a world map that contains dozens of battle fields and places waiting to be discovered

Ancestor - ????

So been playing Ink, and it's really fun. The platforming is solid, as expected from the devs of Frog Sord, and while it's a precision platformer, it had a slower, more cautious pace than the typical game in that genre.

Mainly because the levels start like this

and end up like this

My Quick Look on Unfinished - An Artist's Lament
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJdWrsjUnQo

header.jpg

I beat this game in 30 minutes. It's very short, overbearing in its delivery, initially obtuse, but there are a few moments when this game shines. I am going to post a gif of my favorite moment in the game:

ot0R1js.gif

There is this moment and a few others where everything the game is trying to do succeeds. Other times, the purpose of explaining an Artist's anxieties can become overbearing. And I'm honestly not sure if I'm supposed to be critiquing that as a fault of the game or if that is the purpose of the game's design.

I like the game. I like that it was attempted. There are parts that were inspiring and there were parts that were annoying. The very beginning of the game is the definition of obtuse. Is it obtuse on purpose? Is that frustration I'm feeling *supposed* to happen?

If it was, well then job well done! If it wasn't, well then, that part could have been done better.

Still, I like short games and Unfinished, with all of it's faults, still left a positive impression on me.

I like your review style. Also, the game itself. It looks like with a clearer control scheme early on it could be a really solid experience.

I'm kind of shocked that my preview of Bleed 2 was the first preview I could find.
---

Impressions
Caves of Qud
It's obtuse and complex and intimidating, but man, is the world compelling. This is a true roguelike, in a wonderfully unique far-future setting, with an ungodly amount of customization and depth. You can customize every aspect of your character, from head to left and right hand, and the myriad skills and mutations can result in everything from photosynthetic skin and a beetle-like carapace to the ability to use new weapons and scavenge new materials. It's just an awesome game, but requires a lot of time to invest.

Absolute Drift
I suck at this, but I really want to keep playing. The drifting takes practice, a lot of practice, and the minimalist world brings to mind the cityscapes of Mirror's Edge. There's a lot of content here, but it hinges on you mastering drifting...and that may be a big hurdle for some.

Prune
A wonderfully artistic puzzler that's a worthy addition to any mobile library. Grow a tree, lead it to the light and watch its flowers bloom: that's the core concept of Prune across the game's five chapters. Swiping on the screen lets you slice away branches and steer the growing tree towards the light, through narrow passages, and around obstacles. From red spheres that infect your tree to windswept landscapes, gates and switches, and pollination, Prune's zen veneer blossoms into a surprisingly tricky puzzler in later levels as new and interesting elements are introduced. Watching your tree sprout and reach out with twisting branches towards the light is always satisfying; combined with the shadowy landscapes with red sun and stars overhead, Prune is art in motion

Feist
At a glance, Feist may bring to mind puzzle platformers like Limbo, but this action platformer is all about desperate combat. You're a small fuzzy creature, traversing towering trees, overgrown marshes, and claustrophobic caves, using the environment to your advantage to overcome overwhelming odds. You have no means to defend yourself, no talons or tough hide, only your agility and size. Desperate is the word that describes the experience best; you're always outnumbered and overpowered, always a hair's breath away from death. The reactive environments and fast-paced combat makes for frantic, challenging, and satisfying encounters. Death can occur quite frequently; thankfully frequent checkpoints alleviate some of the frustration,

AniMa
In AniMa, you go by many names - Reborn one, Ruthless one, Devouring one - but you only have one goal. You are a disembodied specter, given the opportunity by some mysterious being to regain your life. But returning to life requires you to take life, in this ominous puzzle platformer.

In each level, you must open a portal to exit, a portal that requires blood sacrifices to unlock. As a spirit, you can't die or pass through the portal, but the inhabitants of these trap-filled levels can. Possessing them allows you to activate switches, open gates, and, most importantly...die. Each inhabitant is different - one able to jump, another equipped with a shield that can block vaporizing lightning beams, and so on - and the challenge comes from figuring how to use their abilities, which must die, and which will be used to enter the portal.

But don't worry. You're taking nothing of value, according to your otherworldly benefactor. AniMa's gloomy, grainy art style and eerie sound design completes the game's dark atmosphere.

1) Caves of Qud
2) Absolute Drift
3) Prune
4) Feist
5) AniMa

Scalebound looks surprisingly great!

So yeah...Towerclimb ain't dead
The endless struggle is coming to an end! We're super close to release and working hard to finish as soon as we can. It's been a long development process but TowerClimb has made it soooo far. We hope it's gonna blow everyone's mind with all the awesome content we've been working on and the second half of the game blows the first away in our opinion, like seriously, you guys, you'll love it if you liked chapter one, you'd love it even if you hated chapter one, it's just so great so far, there's so much mystery to discover. The fans are a large part of what keeps us going, so thanks guys for visiting our very humble forum and keeping us motivated to make what turned out to be an amazing game in our eyes. We're seriously almost DONE this time, and it wont be too much longer.
We're working on the final secrets and making sure everything in chapter 2 works right now, and that we didn't break anything (we're trying our best to properly and thoroughly test for bugs). The entire game is technically done but it's not quite ready for release, there's still some minor work left to do and polishing.

We've implemented proper settings and full screen and have settings that should fix that weird blurriness issue. 25 players are supported just cause the resolution is so small and it was easy to do, and even split-screen is supported now. And yes it saves your settings so you don't have to always reset things anymore :). We hope post release we'll be able to make a level editor available because we're only using some very raw in-house developer tools right now that wouldn't be useful to people that don't know the custom language we made for it. We figure there's enough new content in chapter 2 that the editor will be a nice update later on :). The log has been improved so you can zoom in and stuff now, and has a nice additional feature :). That's all i can say for now but be assured we're trying to get this out to you guys as soon as we can!

Here I was, thinking of picking up Crawl, and you have to go and tell me that Sheltered is finally out...

Any Crawl or Sheltered impressions?

I was tempted on Crawl but it's my understanding the game is basically designed for multiplayer?
Quite a lot of posts in the Steam discussions say the game is pretty fun against bots as well. Obviously the full experience is MP, but offline is supposed to be solid fun

Crawl is *local* multiplayer only right. If you can find friends to play with, the game is amazing. But they really need to put netcode in there.

Oh Snap! They added bots! That's pretty cool.

Crawl is excellent.

Hello, great thread, been a lurker for a long time on the Indie threads.

I'm part of an indie team that is launching a game now.

I'm wondering what, if any, protocol there is here and GAF in general to bring that kind of info to light without being crass and self promoting, etc.

PM me if you don't wanna clutter the thread. thanks so much!

My thoughts on the original release of Ink from June:

I'd been eying Ink since the last thread...Just got through playing it and enjoyed it immensely! I'd definitely be down for a more fleshed out project. I really can't get enough of the world revealing mechanics in it, The Unfinished Swan, and the upcoming Beyond Eyes. They really combine simplicity and art brilliantly.

I'll pick it up on Steam after I finish the unexpectedly-released Beyond Eyes (probably tomorrow). Really excited to see the new features, like bosses.

Wait....

What

Come on, you can't just causally drop an indie bombshell like Beyond Eyes is probably releasing tomorrow and not follow up

Any impressions?
