Indie Games 2015 [May] Now Voting - Post 348!

Toma

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Sure. The fonts can be tweaked a bit by screwing with Windows' magnification settings but the real problem are the icons. They're far too small on my 27 inch monitor at 1440p. Their relative size also makes it tough to click them.

I have the same problem with Paradox's grand strategy games.

4K would be impossible to see but at least those monitors scale 1080p perfectly. It's not so easy with 1440p or 1600p.

I'd show a lossless screenshot but Fraps doesn't work with this game.

Hm, yeah. There doesnt seem to be a fix for that. You could make the icons differentiate themselves more with a UI mod, but the size would still be the same.

Looking to hit some of this months releases this weekend - already played a few of the Ludlum games which were quite neat.

Icy is supposed to be pretty cool, and Cavanagh's Copycat is a fun roguelike

I just started using the awesomeness that is Big Picture mode. I think I'm in love

Weird that some games say keyboard/mouse only but have gamepad support. Like Distance

I think devs don't realize how significant marking your game as full gamepad support is. There are far too many games listed with "partial controller support" and these no longer show up in the "gamepad support" section of big picture. I love big picture mode (but it still has some flaws) and really wish valve/devs would take it seriously and make sure to get full controller support listed whenever possible.

I almost made my own "controller support" category but with over 400 games it's just not feasible

Places - Free (PC)

Places are a series of 3D paintings featuring small and atmospheric places where one can walk around and spend a couple of minutes.

Well that was fast

Parallax is the current IGS deal
https://indiegamestand.com/deal/

Damn, that was quick. Not really bothered though to be honest, I had fun with it. I recommend it if you like your spacial awareness type 3D puzzles. It is a bit of a one trick pony compared to more complex games like Portal, but it does the trick well enough that I think the price is well worth it for a few hours at least.

Just to let you know, I am going to answer this. Maybe I am even making a new recommendation thread, dont know yet, but whenever I wrote whatever I can say about it, I'll let you know.

Just so much: It is MUCH easier to understand than I thought it would be, and I tried a few times with 1-2 hours each before. I just approached it in a wrong way.

Ahh, thanks if you do that. That would be top although don't feel forced to by any means. I've also working my way through Europe Universalis 4 and Crusader Kings 2 so I am not lacking in complex games I need to put time into learning.

Are their any actual previews of the gameplay feel of Rain World? I want to love it from the mad way it looks but I worry it might be similar to the experience I had with Apotheon where I never really enjoyed the way it actually controls and bounced off it pretty quick despite it looking good in gifs and the like.

Oh my goodness, I need that game.

All Things Go Boom looks awesome as well. It reminds me of a 3D Deathtank with a Worms aesthetic. Plus, destructible environments send me to my happy place.

I hope E3 has some indie presence. It's typically not a PC heavy event though.

Jeez, pricing for indie games these days is nuts.
To be fair, I'm going to assume the game wasn't doing well sales-wise so a discount like that is to gain some exposure. Most other IGS deals are older games. I can't recall any other games being featured so soon after release

http://www.tetrapulse.com/

You will meet amazingly deep two-dimensional characters and sentient light emitting objects, you will face psychotic broken bulbs, troubled celebrities and the most fearsome obstacle of all – the ordinary wall (seriously you will die if you run into walls. You are made of glass).

Hey, remember Slayin'?

It was featured on September 2013 thread, I was browsing the play store and for my surprise I discovered that is a mobile version.

Edit: Looking back on that thread, so many good games were featured.

Hey, Yonder by GAF's own taku is looking awesome. A gorgeous co-op exploration adventure game currently in development:

Indeed it's gorgeous.

Campfire - Nice novelty, need to people to play one doing the chords on the acoustic guitar and the other one playing the percussion. I had some fun with my younger brother but there's not much to it.

BitGun - The controls felt too sloppy so I didn't get so far and since you only shoot in one direction I don't know why that action was mapped to mouse.

Copycat - Cavanagh new game and a very neat idea, as mostly of his games the visuals are very simple but works well. The mechanic of killing an enemy and stealing it's ability until you kill other is interesting as you need to change your approach depending of the weapon you have.

Flail Rider - Fun game once you get the controls and it may take some time, the music is catch and the gameplay is simple just drive your car destroying everything in your way while dragging a flail.

Heavens Below - One of the best games I played this month. Regarding the controls the game is pretty simple but nails the atmosphere of an underwater place, even the store page evokes that feel and the music contrasts well with the levels.

Didn't want to make a new thread, so I thought I'd ask here: Has anyone heard anything about the next Kentucky Route Zero episode? Looked around their pages, Facebooks and Twitters but couldn't dig up any info on its status.

I understand it's a creative process and only three folks are making it but c'mon, I bought this in July 2013 and two years later there are still two episodes MIA.

Nothing more than "It's coming along, we like the direction it is headed in but we still need some time."

Ugh. I wish they'd just be a bit more open and proactive in all of this. The last update to their company's page was like a year ago. :/

They've admitted this has been a weak point for them and have sent out a few newsletters rapid-fire lately just to maintain contact with fans. They originally were being quite open with teasers and dev progress during the making of Act 2, but fans claimed they didn't want the surprises ruined so they decided to stop. They've put themselves into a bit of a hard place since, if people say they don't want the game to be talked about, what can they talk about?

Frustrating for everyone involved, but I'm more than happy to give them the time they need to keep pushing out at the level of quality and polish they've had.

Pillars of Eternity or Divinity Original Sin, which do you guys think is the better game?

Pillars. Divinity is quite fun to mess around with and a good game in its own right, but PIllars is much, much more polished and overall better in my opinion.

A Box Full of Joy is black dirty grim wtf smoky foggy adventure game. Making it was a pain in the ass. I think it’s a good tribute to David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky.

However, there is one major difference compared to other adventure games that you might be used to. In Goetia, you play the part of Abigail, the ghost of a young lady. And as a ghost, you can walk through walls and fly through ceilings, you can explore everywhere as you see fit. But… to manipulate objects, you'll have to possess them, just like a real poltergeist would.

A cyberpunk adventure game from the studio that brought you Gemini Rue and Blackwell! The year is 2087. Genetic engineering is the norm, and an omnipresent AI powers the city. Take control of three citizens of this world as they struggle to understand a deadly conspiracy.

Pillars of Eternity or Divinity Original Sin, which do you guys think is the better game?

That isn't an easy choice really which speaks to the quality of both games. Divinity is more of a new radical concept while Pillars is an existing idea with extreme levels of polish and care taken over it, so that might be something to consider. Although overall I would say Pillars of Eternity, especially since Divinity is getting a mega reboot patch sometime within the year (hopefully) so it is likely better to play that later.

Baddy what do you play your iOS games on?

I got given an Amazon gift card when I finished at my job last week and I'm thinking about picking up an iPad. Any recommendations?

iPad Mini 2. IMO an iPad is too big to hold comfortably, especially if I'm playing for an hour or two, and of course a phone is just too small. Mini is the perfect size for me

I found a decent deal for a mini but one of the more recent user reviews said it struggled a little on the new iOS which would be a real bummer. I imagine that the Mini 2 is more robust?

Yes. Better specs and supports Metal for better graphics/effects in the more visual-intensive games
The original iPad mini has a dual core 32-bit 1 GHz Apple A5 processor and 512 MB of RAM, whereas the iPad mini 2 has a much faster dual core 64-bit 1.3 GHz Apple A7 processor, M7 motion coprocessor, and 1 GB of RAM.

Holy shit that animation!

The Mini 2 was the first to feature a retina display. The Mini 1 is basically an iPad 2. If you were going to get any iPad mini, I'd suggest getting the Mini 2 at a bare minimum. The Mini 2 is a slightly lower clocked cpu of the iPad Air.

Magicka 2 - $14.99 (PC)

http://www.magicka2.com/

The world’s most irreverent co-op action adventure returns! In the next chapter of Magicka, players ascend from the ruins of Aldrheim to experience a Midgård almost wiped free of Wizards after the Wizard Wars, with the few that do remain having either gone mad or extremely hostile toward all...

Here's my Quick Look at Galacide:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlGsLVMNOKc

R9TDc3o.gif

Quick Impressions: Horizontal Shmup meets Columns. If you are unfamiliar with Columns, it was a simple match-3 game to be a competitor for Tetris. Sega bought the game from Jay Geertsen and bundled the game with the Game Gear to have their own must-have puzzle game on a handheld. It looked like this:

iphone-columns.jpg

So rotate the Columns into Rows and you have the same idea but in a shmup. Enemies drop different colored pieces that you then have to append to other structures creating 3 or more of the same color in a pattern to remove those obstacles.

You start off with three ships that have varying degrees of Health, Power, Speed and each have their own unique ability. The starting ship has a tractor beam for pulling in colored gems faster, but cannot store any colored gems. The second ship allows you to store colored gems for later use and the third ship allows you to create a clone of your ship that attracts enemies while you are now freely allowed to go through any of the blocks.

It's really interesting in that the third ship plays more like a traditional bullet hell shmup because you don't need to worry yourself about the puzzle element of the game.

Right now, the game is still in early access and the first two ships play against the meat of puzzle aspects of the game. I think it needs to be tweaked a bit. Right now, the game can slow down tremendously with very long sequences of bricks to break. I tend to prefer the third ship at higher difficulties to get a more traditional sense of the shmup genre.

Still I look forward to seeing this game progress as it's an interesting mash-up.

Quadrant - $12.99 (PC)
5426fcb1e906cc4a151fe318_Quadrant_Screenshot_1920x1080_1.png

http://store.steampowered.com/app/365320/

The year is 1979. A secret, final lunar mission has retrieved hundreds of moon rocks, carried out by order of high-level overseers at the Aether Research Facility. The more we begin to understand about our universe, the more deadly it becomes. Overtaken by curiosity, researchers delve deeper and deeper into the unknown, only to find what we think we understand about the cosmos, is terribly incorrect. The research and experiments reach a tipping point, specimens begin to escape, and researchers scramble to leave the secret base. Most leave unscathed, while others lose their lives in an attempt to flee from the deadly forces that lie within.
In the panic, fear, and confusion of countless emergency distress signal codes, help is requested.
The distress signal is unintentionally received by the government's haz-mat cleanup division. A small team of three is sent to carry out what they believe to be a simple routine clean-up. They are sorely mistaken.

Voting May!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of the month, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the last day of the month, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

Which?
Since the list got rather long, here is the complete list of games to vote for for this month.

Fathom: The game seems quite accomplished in a lot of areas but the core gameplay idea is only neat in theory. The fact that you're basically moving through molasses while having to redirect bullets (which you do a lot) lends the gameplay rhythm an irksome quality which should have been avoided. Since you're quite fragile and bullets come flying at you all the time, simultaneously giving you no real time to react, you're inclined to slow down time more often than you need. But then again you have to preempt projectiles so there's no easy solution here. While trying to look up the dev's portfolio, I read a small post-mortem on the game in which he addresses these issues so it seems he's well aware and hopefully working on a revision.

I felt the same way about Fathom but put it down to my slow reaction skills and not enough play time. Still would recommend giving it a go and keeping an eye out for an updated version!
