We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
1. Deadbolt - Free alpha (PC)
tumblr_nk79636jNt1s1t3oyo1_540.gif
http://hopoo.itch.io/deadbolt
Deadbolt is a side-view action shooter made by the same developers of Risk of Rain. The best comparison that I have heard is a mix between Hotline Miami's twitch shooting and over-the-top gore along with Gunpoint's tactical traversing. You just run around and shoot thingsThe plan is that the more you play, the better arsenal of weapons you have. While you start with a fully loaded gun, the bullets are never enough to clear the whole building; therefore, you have to scavenge the weapons of other enemies, resulting in an almost puzzle-like gameplay of bouncing between different enemies to get ammo to kill the next.
2. Pillars of Eternity - $44.99 (Win, Mac, Lin)
So gather your party, venture forth, and embrace adventure as you delve into a realm of wonder, nostalgia, and the excitement of classic RPGs with Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity!
3. Mussel - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
6KGxqs3.png
http://brilliantblueg.com
Change the world around you with your unique Style Changing powers and get your cupcakes back in this retelling of a classic tale. Or something like that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

5. Hotline Miami 2 - $14.99 (PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, PS3, PS Vita)
GtAGdM4.jpg

http://www.devolverdigital.com/games/view/hotline-miami-2-wrong-number

A brutal conclusion to the gruesome saga, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number follows the escalating level of violence through multiple factions born from the events of the original game and driven by uncertain motivations. Step into the murderous mind of several distinct characters - each with their own motivations and methods of execution – as storylines intersect and reality slips away into a haze of neon and carnage. Blistering combat, an unmistakable visual style, and a powerfully intense soundtrack will once again push you to the limit and questioning your own thirst for blood.

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

Kiai Resonance looks really cool, like a samurai Nidhogg. Tempted to get it after seeing this video by ExistentialEgg.

Noticed there's now a handful of samurai fighting games. Dawn of the Ronin, Samurai Gunn, Samurai Blitz, BitUp, and a couple more but can't remember the names.

Is it not possible to link directly to Ludum Dare entries? The links just seem to lead me to the main page. Also, surprised to not see entries for Chroma Squad and Asher Vollmer's Royals.

Ok, enough nagging! Really strong month so I'm going for an early start on OP impressions:

Crayon Poke: Very likeable platformer with a neat mechanic that could be transplanted into a bigger project. Even in its brevity, the game manages to show off interesting and challenging jump puzzles that could be expanded upon, especially considering the metroidvania nature of the game.

Crypt of the NecroDancer: Probably the best and smartest roguelike in months, combining two concepts that, on paper, make for an unlikely combination. The game flat out proves how well they interact, conflating them seemingly with ease and delivering an absolutely worthwhile experience. We'll be revisiting this game when the year ends, I reckon.

Theropods: Very short sequence of tacit point & click gameplay that makes for a solid experience. Doesn't really rely on a very tight string of logic or heavy item management since the telling of narrative takes precedence.

Westerado: Double Barrelled: It's a more polished and expanded Westerado. Been lauding the game for months, the last time in December, so I'm not gonna add anything here. It remains the beautifully realised evolution of Law of the West you always wanted.

There was a load of steam games released in the last ten days after there being a pretty lean first 2/3 weeks. I posted the list as i knew i was never going to get the time to stick them all up.

Chroma Squad, Guns, Gore & Cannoli, Shadowrun Chronicles - Boston Lockdown, Cosmochoria, Kerbal Space Program, in Space, Jump/Boxer, Siralim, Crypt of the NecroDancer, The Indie Mixtape, Uncanny Valley, Everything is Black and White

I added some that were released up to about the 25th and was going to put the others up this month - if no-one else adds the likes of Chroma i will stick it up!!!

I recently moved from console gaming to Steam and PC/Mac gaming, and good god, I cannot wrap my mind around all these indie games.

Loved Gunpoint. Loved the demo of Ronin, which I CANNOT wait for. I'm really into 2d metroidvania platformers, and isometric sprite, or top down sprite games. And in this thread there are sooooo many.

Lots of these games look like they could be great. Also, I know this might come across as a little bit dumb, but what does rogue or roguelike mean exactly?

Welcome to the thread and wonderful world of indie games!

I'll put it this way. I literally discover something new every day.

As for roguelikes, the Wikipedia definition is "a subgenre of role-playing video games, characterized by procedural level generation, turn-based gameplay, tile-based graphics, permanent death, and typically based on a high fantasy narrative setting." The game that established the genre was Rogue, thus "rogue-like". The genre has expanded greatly over the years, so you have "rogue-lites" (follow the basic structure but may only have some of the elements like procedural generation or permadeath), action roguelikes, roguelike platformers, FPS roguelikes, etc.

Some examples would be Rogue, The Binding of Isaac, FTL, Tales of Maj'Eyal, Dungeons of Dredmor, Spelunky, Catacomb Kids, and more

Played through a couple things last month, but never commented on them:

Remembering: A short, beautiful experience with a tranquil atmosphere that combines abstract visuals and audio well. Reminds me of my experiences listening to post-rock. Loved it, and would love to see more like it.

The Stranger: A solid game, with a nice art style and witty dialogue. Enjoyed it.

The demo of Ronin, a turn based kinda gunpoint type game, I had SO much fun with. Been having fun with Broforce a bit, very cool.

Intrusion 2, is just the kinda game I was hoping to find on steam, and I probably had more fun with this game than any on a console in the last ten years. Final boss is brutally hard though! I wish there was a save point right before it.

Also got like 10 other games. IMO, there is so much more fun here than on consoles. But going through this page and testing those games out would take me a week!

Some of these indie games are a bit too hard though! Not like on the consoles. I am playing Volgarr the Viking, a 2d sprite, good looking game, that is just up my alley, but its just too hard for me!

And the other thing I love is how fantastic and present MP is on Steam. Can always find ppl on Broforce or SpeedRunners. Too bad Classic Street Fighter 2 isn't on Steam.

I guess I should go through that thread for best indie games of 2014 too. So far I've only been using Steam itself to find games, and the Steam platform, how smooth and videos and discussion of every game is amazing. Tough to go back to PSN ever now.

Wow, that game looks extremely extremely cool. Just two people also. Man, this does look fantastic. A little bit of decision anxiety is creeping in with all the games available, all the games to check out. But I should try and clear out some of my newly created backlog.

Also have Supertime Force and Ori. But I think I am going to waste a few hours trying some of those Alphas out. It's quite exciting what a couple of people can make nowadays.

I put in a 105 hours in Intrusion 2, and still didn't beat the final boss yet. But I love it. I got a decent backlog because some games were just too cheap to pass up. I do still wonder though, does the cream always rise to the top with indie games?

It probably isn't that long and hard; I think I'm just a bit crap at hard games, and I tend to listen to podcasts and I like to lay back in bed, with my keyboard and mouse and also my controller. I do need to situp for the harder bits in Intrusion though.

Yea man, that new game, following that link, wow. Looks so cool.

Even Intrusion 2, you get crazy weapons, get into Mechs, ride giant Wolves! fight crazy bosses, it has cool physics, I mean its just a badass game.

Oh, I it took me that long because I did use my controller for long stretches of the game, and the one issue I had with the game is, on the controller your character will not jump if he is leaning against something, a problem that does not persist on the key and mouse. Obvs, mouse is more accurate too.

1. Deadbolt - Free alpha (PC)

http://hopoo.itch.io/deadbolt

Deadbolt is a side-view action shooter made by the same developers of Risk of Rain. The best comparison that I have heard is a mix between Hotline Miami's twitch shooting and over-the-top gore along with Gunpoint's tactical traversing. You just run around and shoot thingsThe plan is that the more you play, the better arsenal of weapons you have. While you start with a fully loaded gun, the bullets are never enough to clear the whole building; therefore, you have to scavenge the weapons of other enemies, resulting in an almost puzzle-like gameplay of bouncing between different enemies to get ammo to kill the next.

Okay, so I flat out effing love this Alpha. THe gameplay is amazing. It's like Gunpoint mixed with hotline miami, it is bloody and it has cool physics. You can blow off a guys face, and keep on shooting the body.

This game is sooooooo cool. The story aspect, is not really there yet, there is some stuff, but its all weird and I didn't quite get it, only beat a couple levels though.

Only played a bit, but guys this game is baller. I wonder how much more there is. First time I played an Alpha.

From the dev of Risk of Rain, so it's only going to get better.

Don't expect all alphas to be so top-notch though. Sometimes you get stuff like the Broforce prototype and Catacomb Kids and Factorio, and sometimes you get a tiny tech demo. Of course the cool part is seeing a game progress and evolve from an alpha to release

If you want to keep on-top of indie games and releases, the sites I follow are:

GAF also has a very active indie dev community:

Any genres you prefer? Could probably help narrow down some recommendations; the indie scene can be very overwhelming

Thanks again Toma!!!!

Wasn't able to buy it myself but quite surprised cities skylines missed out on getting a mention!!!!

The more expensive entries rarely manage to get top spots, but yeah, I would have given it one of my votes last month but I barely played any games at all in April.

Speaking of which, catch up on march:
Midboss (Beta)
That game was surprisingly fun. Rather simple roots (based on a Ludum Dare entry), but the level up system (taking over enemies, learning their skills, equipping enemy skills) is really damn fun and rewarding to figure out. Still missing a bit long term engagement, but very well worth checking out.

0hn0
Smart puzzle game, though it took me a while to wrap my head around the logic.

One by One
Very cool concept that needs quite a bit more polish, though. You see the boss enemy acting out his attack pattern and afterwards, you go back in time to set the actions of up to 3 characters that need to align with each other and the boss patterns to succesfully evade, block and attack.

Rock Bottom
Platformer about reaching higher heights, by falling down gaps and reaching the power to jump higher. Not very interesting.

The Deer God
Very cool art style and setting, but the gameplay and level design are just too bland and simplistic for what the game is trying to be.

Wings of Vi
Interesting 2D platformer, but doesnt feel as responsive or mechanically intriguing enough to make me want to continue playing past the demo.

The best game I apparently missed out in March is the Midboss Beta, very engaging stuff. Anyone bought Reassembly? There are quite a few of those "Build your own ship to fight" games now, and I cant judge what the game is containing, 15$ is a bit steep for a blind plunge.

Yeah i enjoyed midboss too - the graphics were a bit sparse but it was the concept that i really got into.

I picked up wings of vi - think it was in a humble bundle a few weeks back - haven't got round to playing it much tbh. If i ever do i will post an update.

Shame about the deer god though graphically it looks fantastic.

Glad it didnt take me too long to play the games I was still missing from March. Already feared I would never catch up to play the May games :p

Well, lets see how long it will take me to get through April. And yeah, I was rather surprised that Deer God is not anything interesting actually, I faintly remember seeing some good impressions.

Drat, my tab crashed, when I tried to reply. Thnx a lot for those resources! I wanna keep on top of these games, haven't had this much fun with videogames in years.

You know I think Only don't take to sims mainly. I like my games to be 2d mostly, isometric, sidescrolling, top down, platformers, action adventures games, and many rpgs, but not all. A good metroidvania type shooter, or a hotline miami, or this deadbolt game, is right up my alley.

I need to investigate roguelike games, to know how I feel of this genre but I suspect, some I will love, and others not as much. Risk of Rain eh? I hadn't heard of that game.

I highly recommend starting with games you havent heard about on our GOTY 2013 & 2014 voting lists:

Oh, man, you are so set. You hit the jackpot getting into indies if those are your favorite kinds of games

Just a few awesome 2D games in development
Megasphere; Death's Gambit; Rain World

Ghost Song is an atmospheric 2D sci-fi metroidvania, being made by a GAFfer

A Knife Made Of Whispers - Another game made by Daniel Linssen, and as his previous games it's explore a simple mechanic, in this case you can olny attack the enemies with you're inside the lanters light. A minor downside is the jumping it felt strange.

Crayon Poke - It's a result from a gaming jam so it's very short but competent. The controls are tight and simple working very well along the game.

Dagdrom - This one is pretty interesting platformer puzzle game, you can use paint to colour some parts of the levels to create platformers or use it to propel you between jumps

Ultra Hat Dimension - It's a short puzzle game that hooked me in a way that I finished it in one sitting, you use hats to pass as one of the monsters wearing the same hat, if you have a matching hat they will not attack you and you can ask to them to get out of your way or make them fight the other rival hat factions. Also, there is a mention to SirTapTap on the credits

Oh my. They look so cool and exciting. That one where you're jumping from area to area on a giant looks insane. Ghost Song longs dope too. These are the exact types of games that excite me.

I am still playing deadbolt and loving it. Its quite hard, but pretty amazing. I dunno if I should try and beat the game if all the case files are there. Its an Alpha, but theoretically it could basically be the full game right?

You cannot save yet, which is maybe why I shouldn't continue, but I can easily keep that window open. I also like that we can keep these games in a digital locker forever.

No, the Deadbolt alpha isn't the full game. I believe it's only taking out the Zombie gang.

Here's a look at some of the other planned gangs

Also the plan for the full game is that choosing what lieutenant to take out up the chain of command will weaken the main boss when you get to him. Fewer reinforcements, etc.

That is really cute, but these games improve a LOT during their development. Trust us when we tell you that there is plenty more great things where that came from. Dont be afraid to hop around and dont cling to a particular game, there are probably at least 10 more similar, highly great games, contained in the GOTY lists alone, not to mention more in progress stuff from Baddys links.

Oh wow, does'nt come out until September, but I played the alpha of Jotun, it's really impressive. Great art, very desolate world, great atmosphere. It feels shadow of the colossus-y, big open fields you explore where the only real enemy is the environment, then huge boss fights. Slow deliberate combat with the bosses, really cool environments. Can't wait for this one. Animation is great too.

Seriously. The gap between an alpha and a released game can be gargantuan. Or just one alpha version to a new updated version

This was the Ronin alpha a year ago

I meant that in the general feel and empty areas + large boss fights sense, not the fanatical "best game evar" sense. I don't actually particularly idolize SotC or Ico...wish I played them in the PS2 days. I see what they're trying to do and it's really cool. But trying to play is urg. Though apparently the PS3 version is allegedly harder than the PS2 one.
