| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
So Dead Star is getting some pretty good impressions:
So anyone else playing this?
I'm really enjoying the dog fighting and the way the different ship classes play together. Outmaneuvering another players frigate in a scout ship is really exiting because you know that at any moment a single weapons burst can kill you.
The Razor ship that has the blink move and the damage aura is my favorite ship right now. Jukeing enemies out with the blink is awesome.
The MOBAish structure was kind of surprising to me. I'm not sure if I'll enjoy playing it with randoms for the long run. I do like that you can still significantly help your team out if you just try and avoid combat and mine ore.
Played about 4 hours last night when I really didn't expect to. I was also pleasantly surprised by the depth of this game. The dog fighting is really fun but also not so punishing that you cannot escape when truly outclassed. With the mining mechanic, much like Splatoon, you can still be useful to your team while trying to learn the complexities of the game.
I'm bummed to see less discussion about this game, but I guess I understand it. Other then the character art, the game looks and sounds pretty generic, especially since there are so many twin stick shooters and MOBA's on the market.
I know people like to dog on PS+ but this game is genuinely one I would have never tried and enjoyed without it. I rank this up there with Grow Home and Helldivers as games I ended up truly loving as a result of the curation.
It's surprisingly a lot of fun. Not really my type of game long term I don't think, but it's a lot more entertaining than I would have expected. Honestly didn't know anything about it and almost uninstalled it finding that it was multiplayer only, but I'm very glad I gave it a shot.
It's definitely a much more valuable free multiplayer experience than Hardware was IMO.
I played for about 2 hours last nite, and I am pleasantly surprised and impressed by Dead Star. I love the top down shooter and MOBA aspect of it, as well as the upgrading system of the ships. I hope this can catch some fire like Rocket League.
So I just got back from EGX Rezzed - managed to see and play a few cool things...
Tokyo 42 - Massive surprise. It's gorgeous, runs flawlessly and is a LOAD of fun to play. VERY excited for the release.
House of Many Doors - This is the game that's being incubated by Failbetter. It's like Sunless Sea; top down exploration, narrative heavy - but has a much more detailed combat system akin to FTL. My biggest gripe, though, is it's room based rather than one big map. One to keep an eye on.
Gang Beasts VR - This has single handedly justified the existence of the Rift. I had never seen one before, let alone used one - but in Gang Beasts the Rift is the camera. So if you lean left, lean forward etc you can zoom and rotate. Made a hilarious game even more fun.
Banner Saga 2 - Yep. It's beautiful, it's a sequel to Banner Saga, I'm going to buy it.
Dark Souls 3 - They had a challenge to see who could beat the first boss - anyone that did got a t shirt. I'm currently wearing that t shirt.
FROZEN. FUCKING. SYNAPSE. 2. - Ok so it's super early BUT, having said that, I'm in love. The soundtrack is amazing AGAIN, the look of it now is so crisp as well - this is going to be phenomenal. I didn't get to ask too many questions though because it was only on one unit and I didn't want to be a dick.
I saw a bunch of stuff too; played the new Devolver game for mobile (it's great and very funny), saw a load of cool stuff in The Leftfield Collection, Expedition: Vikings is looking good too.
A really great vibe at Rezzed each year - the lack of AAA games means it's a much smaller crowd and not quite as young either.
Back up, wait a second. Any more details on the mobile game?
It's called.... Reigns.
So it's an RPG but the mechanic is Tinder. So you're a King and you might, say, get asked to build a church for the people to worship in. You swipe left or right to make the decision and as you do so it tells you what effect that might have; extra faith points, lose a bit of money etc
There's 4 values across the top - Money, Faith, People and Military - and you have to prevent them hitting 0.
So some choices you make then come back later, or they have unknown values so it's not as easy to make a judgement call.
So I ran out of money and was exiled, then when you die you unlock a load of new stuff for your next king. It's like Rogue Legacy with a timeline of your past kings and what they've done.
Really fun, super fast, you're gonna like it.
Not long got back from EGX Rezzed 2016, thought I'd start a post for anyone who went there to keep it all in one place for the interesting stuff. Haven't included the general stuff like DSIII and Just Cause 3. Only listed the platform I played it on.
TTR // PS4
Personal highlight for me was coming across TTR (releases PS4 next month). Honestly hadn't heard anything of this game before going the convention so it was a real nice surprise. Had a nice space in the venue and the devs were really nice guys. Speaking of the devs a few of them were from studio Liverpool and had a hand in Wipeout and also micro machines. So, TTR is basically an acronym for Tabletop racing. Learned it originally started out life as a mobile game (I've not played any version of these so can't give any sort of comment on it).
The game was surprisingly challenging and reminded me a little nostalgically of micro machines on the Genesis (obviously in 3D though). There are a few different modes like elimination or grand prix. Got to see a few of the weapons in action like the ice blast, rockets and boost. It also has that challenge factor that was apparent in the early micro machines games, where you'd skim blocks to shave milliseconds off your time. I've compared it a couple of times to micro machines but I don't want that to diminish the good work on this title alone. The course has obstacles on it that are free moving, so the track changes dynamically. Probably not a massive scale but for example a pool ball might roll across the track on your second lap because it was knocked earlier by someone else. Have a feeling this will be a really good arcade-type title that fills that 'karting' gap.
Everspace // Xbox One
Probably one of the most beautiful games at Rezzed in my opinion. Really disappointed this won't be on the PS4 before some exclusivity deal but it looks immense and I'd be encouraging everyone who owns an Xbox One to check it out. Was literally blown away by how good it looked. Didn;t really get to see any storytelling in the demo. Got to visit a few systems, get some resources and engage in a couple of battles. Probably my second favourite game there.
Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-mpm_47k6Q
Goetia // PC
This was in the Square Enix section. Speaking to the devs they were going for a gothic point and click adventure. The game looks beautiful. From the little time I had with it, it appears your the spirit (white orb) of someone who used to live in the mansion with their family some years prior. So you guide yourself round the house piecing together the story and keeping a journal of your findings to solve the various puzzles. A couple example puzzles early on was to possess some powder which brought out ink on blank parchment, leading you to a clue to find the birth year of the 'eldest family member' which wasn't as obvious as was first presented. Runes scattered amongst the mansion provide an obstacle for areas you can transition to, so you might have to find creative ways into other rooms. Was fun to play, would have liked to have the time to do a full playthrough but was aware people were waiting for a go.
Coffin Dodgers // Xbox One
Yeah, I have a kart gap in my life :) Unfortunately I don't have an Xbox One but tried this out anyway. Again, huge fun especially timing the melee hits right. The way the folks fall off their scooters ensure proper hilarious moments. We only played the two player battle split screen, but it was really fun in a zany old skool type of way.
Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sImyK7hflok
The Black Death // PC
Still in alpha, though the devs were very enthusiastic about it. Really nice bunch of guys. Obviously things look a little janky in sections but the ideas for this game sound excellent. It was unclear whether it will be an MMO or sandboxed to smaller instances at the moment. What was interesting was the mo-cap was done with two Kinects on a PC and some software. Obviously set during the plague and what's interesting is the devs are really trying to push the idea of a non combat based experience. It's basically about survival so if you want to be a peasant you can farm the land and sell your produce to other players (e.g merchants who can then make other items and craft something else from that). It is a perma-death game but you get to keep your skill trees and proficiencies for the next character so it's kind of balanced. Whereas Militia will focus more on hunting. While it doesn't lock out skills or progress routes (e.g. a Militia can still farm), the intention is to 'gimp' the efficiency between classes to keep that choice relevant.
Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0d1VaJiI_s
Tokyo 42 // PC
Another nice little surprise. I went to the Rezzed session for this and was amazed to learn it was a Unity game being made by two guys. There's a lot going on under the hood of this game and it is real fun. It has the option of stealth and also the guns blazing approach. Was interesting listening to the devs as they spoke about the younger audience who had been playing it. Basically they settled on one uniform approach - kill everything. I just thought was a good indication of how difficult and risky it must be to try something a bit different or new in the gamespace.
Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo_K8xkFx70
Postal:Redux // PC
Had a go of this just because of the nostalgia factor of Postal 2. So it's been completely re-imagined in UE4. It's now a formulaic twin stick shooter but it actually works surprising well. I think the art design and scale works really well with the format and obviously the violence. Only managed to see a small selection of the weaponry and level advancement was done by killing 90% of enemies on the level. Only got to play the first three levels and they were quite easy honestly but I take it that's because it's early on and it's an expo.
Super Hot // Xbox One
Very interesting change up on the FPS formula. Basically time only moves when you move. Can see this being a highly replayable game as you try to perfect each section in the most creative and efficient way. The prototype link probably does more to explain than clumsy words
That stuff from Rezzed sounds like it is coming out pretty top. The thought of being able to turn Gang Beats from a 2D screen to a 3D diarama hosting violent jellybaby men is a mega appealing one. And Tokyo is looking pretty cool too.
