| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
5th and thread opened.
We do not actually have a voting result list this month, because nobody voted (or I oversaw it while checking). However, I assume everyone was busy playing Dark Souls 3 with its Indie mentality and game design, right? RIGHT?
:p
Anyway I promise to the Indie Lords to provide some feedback on April and May games this month.
A bunch of new releases and upcoming games posted in April missing from the OT, but I guess you could add them next month. Neon Chrome, Starship Corp, Offworld Trading Company, etc.
Stephen's Sausage Roll - $29.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
DXKiRau.jpg
http://store.steampowered.com/app/353540/
Bennett Foddy (QWOP, GIRP): "This won’t be the last time I say this: Stephen’s Sausage Roll is the Dark Souls of puzzle games"
Jonathan Blow (Braid, The Witness): "One of the best puzzle games ever made, or one of the best video games ever made”
Me: "A lock for my 2016 GOTY Top 10."
Dev: "A simple 3d puzzle game."
Excellent OP as usual, and in other fantastic news for me is I finally solved my GAF random timeout issue that was plaguing me for about half a year so being active this month should be a lot easier and doable. As for played indie games, I put some more time into Neon Chrome and I still pretty much stand by my impressions from last month. Their are a few issues that becomes less so on the later floors but overall it is still a fairly flawed game, although one that you can draw a lot of enjoyment from if you turn your brain off.
Didn't realize Halcyon 6 was out - anyone have any impressions?
In the current version there is only the first act but I feel the core gameplay is already implemented. The game is a mix of base building and turn based RPG, and it works really well. Your base is in an alien base that the humanity discovered, when you start mostly of it will just empty rooms full of debris, so you can assign a character to explore the room, the character can find resources, or random battles. When the battle starts in that place you can choose two more character to fight alongside you, be it random NPC or other character you promote to command a spaceship.
Both kind of battles work similarly, you have many attacks and some of them can debuff the enemy/you, and it's a huge part of the combat because some other attacks will deal more damage if the enemy has a specific debuff, and the same applies to enemy attacks against you.
Besides the base building and the battles, you also have to manage the planets/asteroids belts/black holes that produces resources to you, if an enemy stay for a certain amount of the in the system it gets destroyed and will stop producing the resources you may need.
I still haven't played much of the game to offer a deeper opinion.
I saw this at PAX East. The battle scenes felt a bit .. off? Static? It just doesn't have the feeling I'm expecting I suppose. But it's still early days yet so I'm keeping an eye on it.
Finally got a chance to play Human Resource Machine since it was in that recent bundle. That good old World of Goo charm, with abstracted programming puzzles that should interest fans of SpaceChem and the like
The battle part is static and doesn't have too much movement except for some attacks, think it as the old Final Fantasy games.
More_Badass I need your help.
I've beaten Dark Souls 3 several times now and I need a pallet cleanser.
I'm looking for something light with either a simplified or pixel art style. Top down with adventure or rpg elements. Maybe lighter combat.
I'm also open to obscure 'walking simulators'.
I graduate this week and I'm just ready to kick back and relax. Figured I'd tap into your immense indie knowledge. Thanks for any help.
Secrets of Grindea or, like Panda said, Stardew Valley sound like good fits. One Way Heroics is pretty great once you get into the zone with it, and you can't argue with that price. You just missed Crypt of the Necrodancer on sale, unfortunately.
Am I the only person who sucks at playing Rogue Legacy on KB/M? I know it's controller recommended but man that sucks if KB/M controls are terrible.
Also does anyone know what the developers of Rogue Legacy are up to nowadays?
I think most of the people preferência the controller than Kb/M to play these kind of games, though I finished it playing with a keyboard and imo it controles just fine.
I'm really enjoying Mini Metro - came with the most recent Humble Bundle. You'll end up guesstimating optimal railroads and figure out the best ways to distribute the passenger loads. Controls are as intuitive as they come. The only question is how much longevity does a game like this have. It's easy to gloss over the subtle complexities that the game presents and see it as nothing more than a fun but short distraction.
This is a good one, had a lot of fun with Grow Home.
Dunno about anyone else but I really like tall open world games. Their are so many huge wide open world games that the magic of seeing an object in the distance and knowing I can reach it has kinda lost its splendor. But their is still a childlike glee that I find comes from looking straight up and knowing that if I work it I can one day stand on top of those floating islands, and hurl myself back down at the floor. Grow Home is all about that which makes me kinda love it.
For obscure walking simulators, I'd recommend:
Novelist2.jpg
The Novelist where you play as a ghost spying on a family that is having a rough time, and it's more about the dilemma between work and life.
3.jpg
The Beginner's Guide is an hour-long emotional trek about the struggles in the creative process of making videogames.
lifeless-town.jpg
Lifeless Planet is a thirdperson astronaut game with light platforming that evokes Solaris and 2001.
The Path is an unnerving, lonely, and sometimes sweet experience. It's all about getting lost and girls' experiences through life (playfulness, romance, abuse...). You play as many variations of Red Riding Hood, trying to get to your grandma's house but are encouraged to get off the beaten path. You can collect flowers, then come across certain characters or "wolves" for each playable character, basically different short-stories with lots of playthroughs.
Beyond Eyes is a thirdperson game where you play as a young blind girl in search of a cat, it's an emotional and sometimes scary journey.
Orchids To Dusk (free) is 5min long where you play as an astronaut on a new planet and that's all I will say on it.
off_peak_game_status_quo_by_digi_matrix-d9nczdq.gif
Off-Peak (free) 30min surrealist and funny walk through a train station with quirky characters. Reminded me of Richard Linklater films.
thatdragoncancer5.jpg
That Dragon, Cancer is a surreal and empathic journey with a family coping with their dying son.
I never finished Ether One but heard good things about it, talks about dementia while set in a sleepy seaside town and has sci-fi elements like Eternal Sunshine.
Speaking of walking simulators, I need to get started on POLLEN.
Can't think of many off the top of my head. Although the demo for Against the Wall had a lovely bit of tall wonder (still fingers crossed for a 2016 release.)
Wait, is that 2016 release based on recent news? Last I looked, the dev had put the game on hold
Edit: oh nice, he posted an update last month. He's still working on it
I've recently redone the game's state system, weather, biomes, brick generation, props, saving system, settings, you name it.
Devolver Digital sale on Steam...tempted to pick up Titan Souls and maybe some others. Suggestions?
Looking down the list the games I would say are totally tops are:
Gungeon (although this close to release it isn't much off)
Broforce
Hotline Miami
Talos Principle
Shadow Warrior
Serious Sam Second Encounter
Luftrausers
and Foul Play is okay too.
Titan Souls is not for everyone. I personally ended up loving the game after I gave ot a sexond chance. But it is surprisingly short for a game that makes you walk for quite a while after each death and you can expect to die a lot.
Speaking of the DD sale on Steam (and this seems like the place to ask), how is Dropsy for someone that's not played a lot of adventure games? I'd like to give the genre a shot and I like the presentation.
Is it a good entry point for a newcomer?
Thanks!
I do own a good number of those. I might just get Titans I was on the fence and at the price...why not.
Hey hey hey don't forget about Downwell.
I haven't played it but from the impressions I heard the game was really good and didn't seem to have a lot of non-sense puzzles.
Edit: Looking through the Devolver published games I was surprised to find Cosmic DJ, I was pretty sure it was published by Adult Swim Games.
I really enjoyed Ultraworld. It's got a great art style, is peaceful, and has an existentialist slant to its narrative. Granted it got mixed reviews and some people apparently find it a bit pretentious. It's also got an free add-on coming sometime soon.
I'll also second the FRACT OSC reccomendation, especially if you're a music junkie. In addition to being a great puzzle game, you can synthesize your own beats in it.
Anything worth playing that runs on a chromebook (4gb of ram, for what it's worth)?
I know this thing isn't made for gaming, but I figure there must be some indie titles that run in browser that are worth checking out, hopefully ones I could keep coming back to.
Some browser games I enjoyed:
Candy Box
Candy Box 2
Canabalt
Minimetro - need to be able to run Unity on your browser
There are a lot of browser games on the older threads, you may want to look there. I have such a bad memory to remember games
What other specs do you have? Processor and Graphics? I'm on a regular laptop (Intel i5, Intel HD 5500) and can run most indies and some AAA games
