42 games in the released part, 44 games in the future part. Last months thread saw the most post and views of any Indie thread so far and we saw our small community grow by a few people that share their experiences and game finds with us. Really awesome to see this thing growing bit by bit. Agains thanks to everyone participating! Also while you are here, grab some awesome electronica/videogamey music while you are here: Pyramid - Lost in Space

We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!

Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):

1. Gods Will Be Watching (12 votes) - Free (PC, Browser)
tumblr_mm28gshU5o1rt6u7do3_r1_400.gif

http://www.deconstructeam.com/games/gods-will-be-watching/
Simple, yet very cool and engaging survival management game with that distinctive tall 2D model aesthetic (Sword and Sworcery, Riot). Disturbing yet addictive (the can't stop until you succeed type), it draws you into its world in which you are tasked to help a small group to survive. The announced remake/sequel looks VERY ambitious and definitely deserves a spot on our most anticipated Indie games list.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2. Defenders Quest (6 votes) - Free Demo/ $14,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
defenders-quest-gold-3-540x404.png
http://www.defendersquest.com/
DQ is probably the best, straight-up Tower Defense game I've played in a while. Seems like this past year or so, having your game be "tower defense" like is the new, hip thing (that and rogue-likes.) DQ is the developer's love letter to the old-fashioned, restart-until-you-perfect-the-stage, TD goodness.
2. A Dark Room (6 votes) - Free (PC, Browser)
darrk.jpg
http://adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com/
This is a surprisingly deep game in the same vein like Candy Box, particularly once you open up the Nethack-ish map stuff. Yes it's a grinder, but it lends itself well to the pick-up-and-play style. In fact, I forgot I had the game running in a tab -- I kept coming back to the game for a couple of days in short bursts of gameplay. Highly addictive.
4. Magrunner (5 votes) - $19,99 (PC)
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=599071
Fantastic Portal-style 3D puzzle game with an interesting story and an evolving world that builds up to the supernatural Lovecraftian stuff rather than blow its wad early like most games.
4. Soundodger (5 votes) - Free (PC, Browser)
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
Episode 3: Underwater
0NKDqGQ.png
These guys worked on a weekly YT video series that will present the newest Indie Game releases with small gameplay clips, impressions and anything important you might need to know. Definitely a great way to get an overview of recent releases and hopefully another mainstay for this Media Corner.
| 6. Recently released Indies! |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1000 Amps - $4,99 (PC)
tyezAe9.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/205690/

Puzzle Platformer. Your goal is to restore power to the Amp-Tree-System, a now darkened labyrinth of over 150 compartments, & defeat the intruder. This game is pretty cool due to its non linear approach that just lets you explore, unintrusive puzzles, some smart puzzle designs and a metroidvania progression where you find skills to progress in other parts of the dungeon.

Aaron Steed's Ending - Free (PC, iOS)
j1S9VJi.gif

http://robotacid.com/flash/ending/

Roguelike-like puzzle game with a series of puzzle based levels and a roguelike adventure mode which you can tackle after you trained yourself in the puzzle levels. Very satisfying to play but definitely challenging.

Against the Wall - Free Alpha (PC)
LzkQdxg.jpg

http://www.againstthewallgame.com/play/

In its current alpha state, Against the Wall is a simple game that evokes powerful, sometimes primal feelings. After starting up the game, you only see a huge wall of blocks and your only way to escape the endless pit behind you is to climb upwards, discovering the strange places that exist on this vertical plane.

Bokida - Free (PC, Browser)
EiawLbQ.jpg

http://goo.gl/egH9r

A creative and exploratory sandbox game by a small group of French students. A truly free-form experience where you get what you give... we can take our time to investigate a surreal and gigantic world of towering structures or stay where we are and build a house out of mysterious blocks that we can conjure out of thin air. Using the tools we're given we can build towers or bridges, we can slice blocks apart at any angle, blow apart our creations, or just clean up the pristine world we find ourselves in.

Chester - Currently 80% off at $1 (PC)
223870-chester1.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/chester

This game is pretty cool. Its a platformer in which you unlock characters, skills for those characters and world styles and you need to switch them around in a level to solve them. Seeing the levels instantly switch the art style and with it, the corresponding level features is a pretty cool idea. Only played the first 2 levels, but the systems seem pretty solid and deep enough to voice a recommendation.

Contre Jour - Free (PC, Browser)
zmB4RGR.jpg

Link

Puzzle game platformer in a charming World of Goo-inspired style in which you control.. the platform. Terraform the land and manipulate objects to guide the main character towards the goal while collecting extra points. Very cool feeling to pull off these levels.

Crayon Chronicles - $2,99 (PLAT)
ch1s3_001.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/crayon-chronicles

A rather simple roguelike with a fantastic artstyle that oozes charm. The game checks the genre basics with loots and cool items and an easy to grasp levelling system and allows for 2-4 hour runs.

Crypt Run - Free Demo (PC, Browser)
dc1efc4361dec66002cf679f51221b48_large.gif

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/richtaur/crypt-run-death-is-just-the-beginning

The action takes place in dungeons, which are comprised of a series of rooms packed with interesting monsters, traps, and loot. Explore the rooms to collect powerups and dodge hazards. Attack and kill monsters by throwing swords, daggers, axes, and other fun weapons

Cube World - $20 (PC)
41647-cubeworld1.jpg

https://picroma.com/

Basically a randomly generated action RPG (think Zelda overworlds) in which you can tame animals, kill bosses, level up and stare at blocks. This game is drop dead gorgeous, seriously. But even if we were anticipating it for a while now, the game still needs more content. Taking a stroll through this marvellously crafted game is still an enjoyable, although maybe a bit uneven experience atm especially with the rather unfair beginning. Game gets better after you passed the earlier levels however.

Dead Pixels - $3,99 (PC)
Dead-Pixels-2.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/dead-pixels

Side scrolling survival action game. You walk right, kill zombies, pick up weapons, sell stuff, upgrade yourself, buy ammo and kill more enemies. With three game modes, hundreds of items, weapons and grenades, and a city that is never the same twice, there is always something new hiding round the corner in Dead Pixels.

Desperate Gods - Free (PC, Mac)
in4bFxGYCZEW0.jpg

http://www.wolfire.com/desperate-gods

Desperate Gods is a free online board game that was designed to be played just like a board game in real-life: no rules are enforced by the computer, and all moves are performed in a shared physical space. The game itself is a cross between Monopoly and Diablo, a dark fantasy dungeon crawl for up to four players.

Dungeonmans - Free Demo (PC)
637x358.resizedimage

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/56637190/dungeonmans-the-heroic-adventure-roguelike

It is a roguelike with an actual overworld instead of just an endless dungeon! The game also does feature some semi-permanence in that you can upgrade your academy and get benefits on future characters.

Dusty Revenge - €7,99 (PC, Mac)
directlink_BGlSo-JCAAAbt6G.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/dusty-revenge

Unfortunately no demo, so its unlikely I'll pick it up for the price, but maybe someone else does because the screens look mighty good: "DUSTY Revenge is a 2D action platformer with unique support character mechanics. Utilize the unique support character mechanics of artillery and sniper to play through 8 lavishly drawn environments, defeat numerous different enemies and battle epic bosses to help Dusty achieve his revenge."

Elliot Quest - Free Demo /$4,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)
Screen_Shot_2013-06-29_at_5.52.48_PM.png

http://www.desura.com/games/elliot-quest

Because I love the way he worded his description: Open world to explore. Karma System.Shops and townsfolk around the world will help you.Defeat 4 guardians, 5 bosses, 4 Notorious monsters and one final boss.

Ergon / Logos - Free (PC, Mac)
ucnSqIq.jpg

http://www.molleindustria.org/ergon_logos/ergon_logos.html

Really interesting experimental one-button game by Molleindustria (Every Day the Same Dream, Unmanned). It could be loosely described as a ''platform game'' through the author's stream of consciousness, where you hectically jump from one sentence to another, instinctively trying to put some meaning into it, creating patterns or just goofing around with associations, seeing where will it take you, in the maze like reality that consists only of signs.

Experiment12 - Free (PC)
1VMZzyE.png

http://www.geocities.ws/experimenttwelve/

Game collaboration of 12 more or less famous Indie devs that share a common overarching theme/story. 12 games by 12 different devs, like the ones from Lone Survivor, VVVVV, Vertex Dispenser or Kairo. Completely trippy, yet familiar mechanics that should allow for a wide range of reactions to this unlikeliest and probably most outlandish "game" concept this month.

Fran Bow - Free Demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
t2tJUm1.jpg

http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/fran-bow-a-very-creepy-point-click-adventure-game

Fran Bow is a Horror Point and click game that tells the story of Fran, a young girl struggling with a mental disorder and an unfair destiny. It is a trip to the deepest and darkest side of human psychology, delivered through blood and tears.

Frequency Domain - Free Alpha Build (PC)
AQ44GZi.jpg

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=142393387

Frequency Domain is about exploring music and sound, ideally creating a synesthetic experience for the player. Not much of a game, but I enjoyed it as a neat music visualizer.

Gateways - $4,99 (PC)
46lBfJj.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/216290/

I like the "Metroidvania meets Portal" tagline that everyone uses. It's got some mind-bending puzzles but it feels good to complete each one. Definitely an underlooked gem, even within the Indie scene. Lets give it some more exposure this month!

Humans Must Answer - Free Beta Demo/ $10 (PC)
Humans-Must-Answer.jpg

http://sumomgames.com/

Making their second and final appearance in this thread series. Its a classic 2D space shooter set in the distant future...with lots of explosions. Fantastically looking, branching paths and lots of level and enemy variety make this something to check out for shmup fans.

Infested Planet - $14,99 (PC)
W3xaDiL.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/204530/

First and foremost, Infested Planet is a game about exciting tactical skirmishes. It’s about fighting against incredible odds and coming out on top. That’s what happens when you land on a planet with 5 marines and blow the heck out of 10000 aliens.

ISIS - Free (PC, Browser)
gvHu3VR.png

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/167055177/nsc-isis%20maiden%20voyage.html

It's a short text-based game with an interesting premise and has some replayability, give it a try. For the sake of not spoiling the experience, I'd say give it a go! Its rather short, so just give it a try.

Ittle Dew - $13,99 (PC, Mac)
IttleDew.png

http://www.ittledew.com/

The base game could be considered a tad short for its price, I completed it in just under 2 hours although I predict completing all the optional puzzles should at least double that time and the gameplay is really impressive. If anyone is that particular type of Zelda fan where you totally loved the dungeon puzzles then I would say you might want to check this out because the entirety of Ittle Dew is really a tribute to that gameplay.

Lasercat - $2,99 (PC)
lasercat.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/lasercat

Very charming open sidescrolling action platformer with frequent check points and riddles! The art style looks a bit simple, but it really comes together nicely ingame.I really like the way they approached the level design here, meaning that almost every room can be considered a puzzle or platforming challenge, after which you can save, allowing for carefree experimentation.

http://www.kongregate.com/games/Reptilegames/megabyte-punch

Combine Megaman, Super Smash Brothers style melee and multiplayer, platforming, Minecraft-esque graphics, tight controls and expansive levels, and you'd get Megabyte Punch.

MTB Freeride - Free (PC)
screen9.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/mtbfreeride

Downhill Freestyle biking game without scores, checkpoints or anything else that seems to make a game. Biking just for... the fun of it.

Outer Wilds - Free (PLAT)
screenshot2.jpg

http://www-scf.usc.edu/~abhinavr/OW/about.html
http://alexbeachum.com/archives/258

Reef Shot - Free Demo /$9,99 (PLAT)
RS9.1.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/reef-shot

Currently on sale for the first 2-3 days of this thread over here: http://groupees.com/arpg. This is an unconventional underwater adventure game set along the coast of Robinson Crusoe Island in which you arent supposed to kill, but to take pictures. The story takes you along several locations and allows for some exploration while you try to achieve the scores needed for the requested photographs.

Ring Runner: Flight of the Sages - Free Demo SOON/ $12.99 (PC)
triBase.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/ring-runner-flight-of-the-sages

Ripple Dot Zero - Free (PC, Browser)
TB0OCtY.jpg

http://www.rippledotzero.com/

Platformer that seems obviously inspired by early 90's platforming games in the Jazz Jackrabbit/Sonic style. Satisfying gameplay, lots of hidden areas and a good soundtrack. Definitely worth checking out if you like these kind of game, especially at no price.

Rotational - Free (PC, Mac, Linux)
rotational.jpg

https://sites.google.com/site/fortdagamesauxiliary/

Described as “a love letter to Hexagon.” by its creator, this is much more than some silly clone with a few additions/twists (unlike certain other ‘love letter’ creations). I mean, just take a look at the screenshot above. That’s right: 3D! Have fun twisting and turning, in an attempt to escape a constantly shrinking space. Resistance is futile. You will play Rotational.

Shadowrun Returns - $20 (PC, Mac)
pIm35as.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/234650/

The revival of the isometric RPGs is upon us and the first title just peeked into our living rooms. Shadowrun Returns is a turn based Squad tactics game with a rather linear mission structure. The combat itself however is extremely rewarding (play higher than normal) and the writing and story make up for any of the shortcomings the game unfortunately also presents. Its not a perfect game, but its still a very enjoyable one and the Editor promises great things from the community.

Smooth Operator: Call Center Chaos - $4,99 (PC)
smooth_operators_call_center_chaos_20032013_3.jpg

http://www.desura.com/games/smooth-operators-call-center-chaos

Very fun and addicting simulation game. Its not overly deep, but has enough going on to be definitely worth playing through once. You build and upgrade the facilities, manage the schedule of your workers to decrease the amount of people using the recreational facilities and elevators at the same time, manage their work efficiency, happiness and everything else that needs doing (repairing PCs, building repairs).

StarMade - Free Alpha(PC)
98E8A7125D712AD74AD308C6BE57275312B8D30E

http://www.star-made.org/

Explore: Infinite space in all directions. Explore distant planets and ancient space stations. Gather resources, or go on epic adventures. This game basically looks like Minecraft in space, so lets see how it holds up.

Strata- $2,99 (PC, Mac)
screen1.png

http://www.desura.com/games/strata

I can tell from the trailer that the game is very well designed. Basically a puzzle game with a mechanic that I have no clue how it works! Looks very intriguing and the price seems right. Definitely will pick that up next month.

Tessalation - Free (PC)
vt9Dzhw.png

http://tessallationgame.wordpress.com/

Tessallation is a First Person, “Single Player Co-Op,” Puzzle game about a 4th grade girl named Tessa that has the whimsical ability to time travel!

T.O.M.B. - Free (PC, Browser)
bvVkb8c.gif

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6822849/KnightyGames/tomb.htm

Another one of the recent Ludum Dare entries, this game is a nice little browser gem. This one asks you to take minimal actions. Each of the 5 or so levels asks a different challenge of you. You can't beat the one posted here, for example, unless you manage to make 5 or less jumps

skyRogue

skyRogue is, at the time of writing, a simple little dogfighter with a slick aesthetic and a great arcade flight model. It's a one man operation and is the product of around 30-odd hours of programming. The idea is to create a realtime combat roguelike with aircraft, and while the roguelike elements are yet to be put into the game - super curious about that - skyRogue is already pretty awesome. Works very well with 360 controller.

Nab the installer from the devblog. It's a massive 8MB.

Speedrunners is kind of amazing. I broke it down a bit in the Steam thread:

speedrunners.png

I just played an hour of the Speedrunners beta. I had a really good time.

- It's a 4 player competitive platformer. The goal is to run off the screen and leave the others behind.
- Multiple paths, powerup pickups, traps
- You have a rope and can swing on certain material
- It's not built in flash. It just looks like it.
- It feels good.

You have to manage the level and watch your step, all while trying to slow down the others. You will have to learn levels as you play, and pick the right route to help you win. Some contain boosts, while others have pickups like remote mines and Scorpion-like hooks. There are also switches that can close up parts of the route, screwing over the ones behind you.

This game has a chance to be something special. I hope they plan on having a wide selection of levels, and hopefully even a level editor.

Mount Your Friends
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxqPds3qqz8
(Avaliable on XBIG for 80 MSP)
More specifically, Mount Your Friends is a physics based competitive climbing game where what you climb is each other. Each player takes a turn climbing to the top of a tower of previous climbers (and a goat) trying to make the new highest point before time runs out. If someone runs out of time before reaching the top, they're eliminated. This is a game that is simple to get into, but the more you play it, the more nuanced your strategies become. Adept competitors can create massive towers by flinging themselves faster than simple climbing methods can attain. Of course, there's also the humor of seeing your ragdoll climbers fall all the way down a tower!

Well then get going! You have something before you, but then at least you are rightfully confident enough to vote on the best 10 ;)

I'm so hype for this month. My goal is to try out at least all the indies that I already own or are free. Maybe pick out a couple of sub-$5 games as well.

Cloudberry Kingdom and Spelunky are two other choice indies coming out this month. I'll post a synopsis and screenshot later if noone else does.

Also - so Gods Will Be Watching is that good eh? Didn't get a chance to try that one.

Yeah, could be. These games never have huge communities. Feel free to ask here in the thread if someone else has any interest in trying it with you. I def. want to check it out eventually, but probably not during the next few days.

Everyone should definitely check out Outer Wilds. It's a game with a surprisingly large scope for a small brand new team(i think still in school).

Either way, very cool idea. Hopefully they finish it up.

you can download the alpha for free here: http://alexbeachum.com/archives/258

I am really interested in that game. Cant wait getting to it (since I'll go through the OP list A-Z)

Another month, another great thread. Thanks for keeping up with these Toma.

By the way, After the Gods is Android as well. Definitely an augmented reality game, for phones as well as tablets.

We post the Overlooked recommendation here?

If so, I'd recommend Warning Forever. (Wait, would that be considered overlooked? Have people heard of the game?)

Anyone here recommending Papa&Yo?

Another excellent opening post Toma. I always get a buzz when I look down the list of games and see something I recommended in the last thread go up. If I could take a moment to double recommend something that is on the OP, Humans Must Answer is well worth your time. It's a really well put together shooter with a very nice level of customization and rewarding difficulty (if you play on the one they recommend at least). It has a greater focus on smart use of your weapons and on these gun drones you can drop rather then just dodging a tsunami of bullets which definitely makes it memorable for me.

And a few comments regarding the voting:

It wasnt a huge surprise that Gods will be watching ran away with the voting, but seeing Super Splatters and Magrunner in the top spaces was awesome and weird at the same time. Speaks for their quality that they managed to outgun games that have non-paid versions (especially MagRunner at $20). Both are really great games.

So that's the first time I've ever heard of Octopus City Blues. Looks wild.

It left me feeling weird though because I love the music and the art style (closest thing ive ever seen to Chrono Trigger in the technical sense) and what seems like the insanity of it, but at the same time I have no idea what it's about other than the fact that its an adventure game, and I find the entire website terrible to read through, which is a bad sign for a game centered around narrative. Hopefully it'll clear up later.

I did heard a lot of mixed opinions, some people hated it saying the controls are clunky and the puzzles too easy, other people loved it praising the touching history.

Just noticed something.

Fuck.

Warning Forever - Freeware
http://www.hikware.com/Prod/index.html#wf

Facade was the game that introduced me to indies, but it was Warning Forever that cemented my passion for these obscure inventive titles. Warning Forever is a bullet hell SHMUP with a cool vector graphics style. But it's not like any other SHUMP you've played. This is the David and Goliath version: just your tiny ship against one boss. You have your rapid fire weapon and your reflexes and you must survive. You can target parts of the enemy and blow it apart piece by piece.

But what makes WF special is that the boss learns and adapts to your tactics. Focus all your fire at its front and the next iteration will be more heavily armored in the front. Get killed by lasers? The next boss will be brimming with laser turrets. Each boss grows bigger, more menacing, armed with more weapons, until your tiny ship is facing off against a screen filling monstrosity. Every boss is randomly generated according to your own tactics and performance. How long can you survive?

It's an innovative formula that I'm surprised never caught on. I remember many sites praising the game when it first came out. Even IGN had an article on it back in '07. I still play the game today and it is still challenging after all these years.

Word of advice: the controls are a bit weird. Z is to fire (and select menu options), X is for slow more precise movement, D activates an aiming mode that allows you to aim at the boss as you move and alters the spread of your fire. F pauses. Arrow keys move.

The most recent version (2012) on the download page has gamepad support, haven't tried it yet.
