Indie Games [February] Now Voting - Post 808!

Ugh, I can't remember the name of the game where it's first person and it's about memories, you collect them. Quite dark look. It was shown on a Patrick Klepek Worth Playing, I think, or maybe I'm going bonkers. All this talk of Double Fine's Mnemonic reminded me of it.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Voting February!

RULES THIS MONTH IN SHORT: Up to 10 games, at least 4.

Why?
Because we want to offer people who first step into the thread an easy go-to list for great games. Plus it gives more attention to the titles that really deserve it.

How?
Everyone votes on his top 10 games out of the ones that already have been released AND are mentioned in the OP (So everything in Post 2). I'll tally the results and put the best 5 in the next thread. A minimum voting count of 4 is required. Feel free to vote for games that you deem "important" or the ones that you enjoyed the most. Since this is a rather communicative thread, feel free to include a short description why these games ended up on your list or a "honorable" mention if you feel that one game deserves another mention even though it wont count for your list. That way it would also make it interesting to read which games we should check out that others might have enjoyed. You dont need to "rank" the 10 games. Every list entry gets 1 point for the overall ranking.

When?
This thread is still open until the end of the month, so you can drop your list in here whenever you want. You can also change your list up to the last day. I wont start the count before the last day of the month, so everyone has still time to revise their lists and play some games. Speaking of which, if you dont even KNOW 7 games to vote for, there are plenty free games in the OP to check out. Most of which are rather short too. Use the remaining week to catch up with 1 or 2 titles you didnt get around to yet!

Which?
Since the list got rather long, here is the complete list of games to vote for for this month:

Zero - Free (PC, Linux)

I think this might be the first month where I played everything I wanted to before the voting.

1. XenoRaptor
Now true, the game isn't even finished yet, and it may not have the depth of a game like Crimsonland, but I believe how fun a game's gameplay is, how enjoyable its mechanics are is paramount, and I can't stop playing XenoRaptor. Its a game I keep returning to, because I find the mechanics and gameplay so enjoyable. It's fast and fluid, with vivid stylishly weapons, and agile responsive controls. Similar to how Teleglitch's distortion effect made your weapons seem like they were tearing apart the environment itself, the small effects - from the screen shake, subtle zoom, recoil, etc. - make every one of XenoRaptor's weapons feel satisfyingly powerful. Evading a swarm of enemies, watching them kill eachother, and then wiping out the stragglers with your lightning shotgun is just awesome.

2. The Floor is Jelly
On the surface, The Floor Is Jelly is a standard platformer, run and jump over gaps, and dangerous spikes, wall-jump up narrow tunnels. The controls are responsive and simple. On that note, it isn't the most challenging game, certainly not in the spectrum of difficulty of games like Super Meat Boy or even Braid. But those points aren't negatives; The Floor Is Jelly is a fun game, and the difficulty comes not from frustrating challenge but from the gradual layering of new interesting puzzle mechanics. From flowers that bloom in rain and those only sprout without rain (because they're part cat of course) to switches that rotate entire levels, and then switches that rotate only singular platforms, and later Guacamelee-style dimension swapping, The Floor Is Jelly constantly introduces new mechanics that add to the core gameplay in fun ways. The endlessly entertaining and charming art style only adds to the enjoyment.

3. LYNE
While LYNE is also available on PC, I'm convinced that the best way to play it is on a touchscreen. The smooth minimal interface hides a massive wealth of content. The puzzle mechanics themselves are simple - connect various paths between nodes - but the infinite levels and the increasingly challenging puzzles make it an enjoyable addictive experience.

4. Turbo Dismount
Turbo Dismount won't appeal to everyone. Some will think it's simple and boring. And true, the game is mechanically simple, but as a fan of the original freeware Dismount games and Stair Dismount on IOS, I never find Turbo Dismount. Take Burnout's Crash mode and add a fragile easily dismembered ragdoll and then mix in all kinds of obstacles and vehicles and you have Turbo Dismount in a nutshell. It's the kind of game you play to watch the crazy replays in slow motion, watching your vehicle tumble and your ragdoll get torn in half by a bus. The regular updates and active developers make the experience even better.

5. Olympia Rising
At the moment, Olympia Rising is only a demo, a snapshot of what the full game will, but that sliver of gameplay is already fun and polished, with nice pixel graphics and fluid challenging gameplay that puts a focus precision and flow, I almost overlooked this game but the demo sold me. I can't wait to see how the game grows and evolves in the months to come
---
Kromaia - been supporting this game a while, since its Indiegogo campaign. It's fast-paced, visually impressive, 6DOF twitch combat in open abstract environments and with great music. The alpha is kind of bare bones, but it's very promising and the core gameplay is already polished and fun.

Rockets Fucking Everywhere - The title says it all. There are rockets fucking everywhere and you need to dodge them. It's the kind of game that could easily be lost even among the most niche of indies, but RFE does one thing - insanely fast, very challenging twitch evasion - and it does well. And bonus points for the great name

Nidhogg - Chunky pixels fighters in weird environments, that has more depth and strategy than you might expect at first glance. The tense seconds as you and your opponent size each other up, the fast furious combat with its nice animations and wide range of moves, and the varied arenas make Nidhogg a joy to play

Hyphen - Loved the demo, and how the developers added more arcadey style obstacles and hazards to the already challenging Kuru Kuru gameplay

Trace Vector - Surprisingly addictive and challenging, the simple controls make for a simple to play, tough to master twitch game of reflex and reaction.

Zenzizenzic - Promising abstract bullet hell shooter that is definitely art in motion.

So, Drunken Robot Pornography runs exceptionally well for what it is considering I'm on a laptop. I haven't played much of it, but it definitely seems fun. For now, I mainly want to second M_B's statement on the smooth performance.

It currently features permadeath, proc gen levels, artifacts that grant metroidvanian abilities, bosses. We're hoping to make this a skillbased, and very challenging platformer.
It builds off our previous experience with metroidvanians and boss arena games, Min and also The Two of Us, but it's also inspired by games like Diablo and a little bit of Spelunky.

In the game, you can play as either a GALCOM military marine or an Insurgent soldier. The primary objective is to gain control of each of the four planetary bases, four space stations and a derelict carrier – all of which you can do combat inside. You do this by waging war as an infantry marine (first or third person), on land or naval vehicles and aircrafts (fighter, gunships etc). You will take over bases by either destroying or hacking into and disabling their defense systems, thus making them vulnerable.

Tallowmere is a 2D indie action platformer for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, featuring randomly-generated levels, enemies, weapons, and gore.

Children of Liberty - 2014 (PC)

http://childrenofliberty.us/

Children of Liberty fills in the plot holes of the tale of Paul Revere's Ride while remaining historically accurate. Play as either Joseph, the classic platformer; Ally, the nimble freerunner; Doug, the burly tank; or Sarah, the bratty eight-year old ninja, and live out the events of the hours leading up to the American Revolution.

A Revolutionary stealth platformer, Children of Liberty blends classical 2D gameplay into a 3D world. Run, sneak, and turn your way through the streets of Colonial Boston in a stealth adventure like no other.

Day67-Hydra.gif

Rocket launchers. Grenades. Magic. Medieval weapons. A mix of mechanical and monstrous enemies. A unique art style. Roguelike platformer. Gore.

Some more details from the IndieDB
Currently, Tallowmere is a singleplayer experience. You start in a dungeon with an axe, talk to some friendly NPCs (who assist you in various ways), then make your way into the unknown on a mission to see how far you can get. The first room has one main enemy, the second room has two main enemies, and so on; the game eases you in but quickly gets harder. A typical playthrough for me lasts anywhere from 2 minutes to 30 minutes. Every room, including your home room, is randomly generated. Some rooms have bosses or special events. One of the monsters in each room holds the key that opens the door to the next room.

Some rooms contain treasure chests with new weapons. Most rooms contain traps in addition to the monsters. Every room contains a waypoint to return to town. You can block enemy attacks with your shield, but you can't block traps. As you slay your foes, you collect their souls. Collect enough souls and you can return to town to level up your maximum health and damage output. Enemies and traps level up after you do.

Combat Core - PC

Combat Core is a multiplayer arena fighting game I am developing using the Unity game engine. Most influence is definitely from an old Sega Dreamcast game named Power Stone.

I cannot say enough good things about Sir, You Are Being Hunted, the game just oozes atmosphere. Every time a new update gets released I get totally immersed in its world for hours.

Rex Rocket is hard. Well I was expecting a challenge but the demo is tough. An awesome mix of retro aesthetics, combat, precision platforming, and puzzles. We're talking "shooting platforms in mid-air to make them stop while jumping over spikes and evading bullets at the same time" hard. Controls are simple and responsive and the art style is cute. But yeah, don't be fooled, Rex Rocket is difficult

I hope I've made a good decision to wait on it till they feel comfortable releasing it in a finished state. A lot about it ticks so many of my gaming interests, which has made it hard to wait.

Hey Toma, had a question. So I'm maintaining the 2014 Kickstarter thread, which is probably the biggest thread I've done so far. Multi post OP, etc. Do you have any advice on maintaining a big thread like that?

Set yourself some rules for continuity. Update it once a week and bump the thread with updates or something otherwise you'll quickly burn out of maintaining the thread.

I'll also link your KS thread in the march thread.

The game still has plenty of issues (it's still in alpha after all), so waiting until they finish isn't a bad idea.

The Hong Kong Massacre - ????
F2phxF7.gif

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=39027.0

It is a top-down action game inspired by classic Hong Kong action movies. I wanted to make a game for sometime that tries to capture the intensity and mayhem that gunfights creates in these movies. The idea of the games is that the player is set out to hunt down a triad leader(or similar) in Hong Kong, his whereabouts is unknown so your job is to track him down. You do this by finding people in his organization for more clues.
The main game mechanic is the ability to slow down time whenever you want. This is crucial to be able to clear a harder level. When you slow down time you can dodge bullet by rotate your character and also rack up shoots when killing enemies.

And because this game needs to be seen in motion...

Because top down shooters didn't exist before Hotline Miami

Edit: Also the over the top splatter decals really have little to do with the HK action movie aesthetic.

I thought about that as well. Nothing about that movie seems like HK action movies. Just using a bullet time skill is not really helping them to achieve that either.

Well to be fair, think it's more to do with the gory nature combined with the top down shooting element.

Also agreed with the HK point. Been watching a shit ton of Asian movies, mainly dealing with organized crime and no idea how the gore angle is worked in there.

Even without the gore though, what would make this game any more HK-ey than Hotline Miami for example?

Wait I'm off topic then. I meant that the gore in combination with the top down shooter is why the connection of a non-retro Hotline Miami was made. As in more of a direct response to the idea that Top Down Shooters existed before Hotline Miami.

In terms of the question you asked, no idea really. Other than the scenery/ music the gameplay changes would mostly be fast paced scenes with jumping between Melee and ranged.

If he was to go for the more Traid/ undercover cop it will completely have to be fast paced melee as guns is only introduced as a late stage mechanic in these movies. So from a gameplay perspective I imagine melee combos with a fast switch to range with alot of environment interaction (used as weapon or straight up weapon).

Personally I think a highly detailed, realistic looking Hotline Miami is what's being made with those gifs right now.

So basically the gore is over-the-top at the moment, simply because it's early pre-alpha. It'll be toned down later
I can say I agree that the blood is over the top as it is right now. Right now only one set of effects exist for all weapons and distances. My plan is to make it different based on weapons and distance you shoot someone. I could live with if you shoot someone point blank with the shotgun there should be fairly amount of blood, but not if you shoot someone with a pistol 50 m away from you.

Then again I like when there is a lot of visual impact upon shooting an enemy so once I get other stuff (paper, debris and whatnot) in there the blood might be scaled down. I just have to iterate some more on.. Or maybe it should just be a setting in the options menu (from "Realistic" to "Everything explodes!")

Yeah, thats more or less what I would have imagined as well. I wasnt even necessarily complaining about the gore/blood, just wondered where his HK sentiment came from as it seems rather difficult to realize in a 2D top down shooter.

Uh, this looks like a straight up Hotline Miami clone with a different skin. Besides the perspective and mechanics, even the crosshair and the behavior of the camera panning is a straight-up copy

I can relate to that. So many games have been/are coming out right now that I am playing immediately that I pretty much have my gaming schedule set through mid-April. What a great problem to have though!

I had actually forgotten until today that the Shadowrun expansion is coming out Thursday too so that is another one to cram in. I really hope it is more open-ended like they have been promising.
