What are these sites? Never see commercials for them. Well, maybe once or twice, they need to advertise more.

Employees can see how often players are drafted. Since everyone can select the same players when competing against each other, it benefits you to choose other players. In the case where a player a lot of people drafted does well, many entries benefit. If you know who wasn't chosen often and they have a really good game, that puts you ahead.

Is that not public information on these draft sites like it is on every other fantasy sports site?

Even if it wasn't though, presumably the more common picks are more common because they have a higher success rate, so picking the less common picks shouldn't be an advantage overall. The same way picking the longshot is not an advantage in parimutuel betting.

If pick rates are private I could see that distorting the odds though since the 'bettors' don't have perfect information, I just don't know how much of an advantage there would be there.

Is fantasy football gambling?

Basically it's not considered "sports betting" because you aren't directly betting on the outcomes of games, which is the most laughable gambling loophole I have heard in awhile.

The fact that this barely-gray-area faff is tolerated, and meanwhile NJ gets stonewalled when they try to implement sports betting, just makes me shake my head.

The picks aren't public until lineups are locked.

You can't think of this like a regular fantasy league since every team can pick the same players. Avoiding the frequently chosen gives you a better chance if the player you select has a great game.

Yeah I could see the private information part having an effect, but it's still hard to see it being a big enough advantage to make 350k in a weekend.

Overall I think these sites are shitty loophole workarounds and we should just legalize sports betting. I mean basically every state has a lottery these days, and that is way more gross and exploitative than sports betting or casino games IMO.

I wonder how many of the employees are seeing what the big fish who actually consistently win money at this stuff do and just copy it.

Well really the only way to win is to pick players that do well that other people didn't also pick. If everyone picked the best running back in a particular week, no one is better off than anyone else.

It's not a guaranteed win by any stretch, but it's a significant advantage.

What I really hate is a player isn't injured 10 mins and ESPN or NFL Network is already talking about how big the impact the injury will be on fantasy players.

You can easily run algorithms with this additional data point and give yourself a real leg up on everyone else.

Yeah after learning more about how the sites work, it seems like just picking the 2nd or 3rd at each position could be a significant advantage, but still fucking $350k!

Definitely wouldn't mind not seeing their commercials for awhile...

Oh yeah it's a total fantasy culture now. No, don't act concerned about a possibly serious injury to a player...let's just worry about the poor fantasy players who put $20 in a pot at the beginning of the season.

Well ESPN gets money from Draft Kings. There are regular talking heads on SportCenter that talk about the price on Draft Kings.

Here I am, taking my midnight stroll for my constitution, listening to Neil Degrasse Tyson's STAR TALK podcast and I shit you not, BAM. Draft Kings sponsorship.

I shit you not, they have so much fucking money they're sponsoring STAR TALK.

I threw my phone.

Hearing from several inside folks, this #Draftkings #Fanduel scandal is about to get a hell of a lot worse. Hunker down/cover your ass time.

Seems like there may be more to come.

New York Attorney General Opens Inquiry Into Fantasy Sports Sites

The New York attorney general began an inquiry Tuesday into the prospect that employees of daily fantasy football sites have won lucrative payouts based on inside information not available to the public, asking two leading companies, DraftKings and FanDuel, for a range of internal data and details on how they prevent fraud.

I was going to try (one of these) sites out too, but apparently AZ is one of the 4 states where online "skill" based gambling is too vague for these companies to take a chance.. so they just made it as a non-participating state.
