IO Interactive (Hitman) making a new IP using Unreal Engine

It seems Square Enix is interested in New IPs again.

What is the job?

IOI is looking for a talented gameplay programmer to join our incubation team. The team is currently working on an new unannounced IP and is responsible for prototyping different mechanics for the Hitman team. We are looking for a programmer to help the team drive the project forward. This is your chance to work with the best and to put your mark on what we hope is our next big success.

You will work closely with a small team of designers to prototype gameplay mechanics in Unreal Engine. In addition, you will participate in design discussions and help put in place production pipelines.

What is required?

You have solid experience with AI, physics, animation and game mechanics for AAA games and experience from projects on current gen consoles and PC.

You possess profound skills in C++ and have experience with Unreal Engine.
You’re well-founded in mathematics and hold solid game design skills and solid understanding of programming best-practices.

I think the trend of every game using proprietary engines this gen has definitely hampered development and increased dev time vs last gen where every other game used UE3.

I'm hoping more games use UE4 or the proprietary engines that are being created this gen are easily modified to help churn out more games next gen.

I'm not a devloper but it is strange to see the lack of games being made on established engines that already have tons of support and documentation.

It'd be nice to see IO make something new again. Now that Hitman is getting a second season, they can keep that going with less people I imagine, and have a second team work on something new.

Question though - did previous Crystal Dynamics job postings say they were working on a new IP, which turned out to be an Avengers title? A part of me wonders if IO is also going to be put to work on a Marvel title.

Kane & Lynch Episodic Series
I wanted to say, now that UFG is no more, they should give IOI the Sleeping Dogs IP to do something episodic... Sleepy Dawgs: Season 1 - Episode 1: Still Fuck Dog Eyes.

But K&L would be just as good.

Held my tongue though ... the whole "new IP" and all part of the post haha

Somewhat surprising, considering it wasn't too long ago (I think?) that Square/IO said that IO would be focusing exclusively on the Hitman franchise. But then I guess Hitman's success paved the way for this new IP. Good for IO.

Crystal Dynamics have been trying to get new IPs off the ground for a while now (obviously without success) so it's also possible that those job postings were for a different project which was cancelled in favour of the Avengers project. But either way, I can't think of any reason why Square and Marvel wouldn't have just announced IO as one of the sudios working on Marvel IP when they made the Crystal/Eidos announcement so this probably isn't Marvel-related.

Freedom Fighters style game, with a deeper customization system

It would work so well in the current climate

I believe when SE made the order for IO to work solely on Hitman, it led to a firing nearly half the studio and a cancellation of non-Hitman titles. I may be wrong, but K&L3 was one of these dropped projects.

Interesting to see what comes of this. Is it a standalone IP, or much like Hitman and Kane & Lynch in that it exists in IO's fictional universe they're most famous for?

Finally, Helmut Kruger gets his own spinoff by popular demand.

Manage your high-fashion career and try to retire with enough money before the crow's feet set in.

Awesome! IO is an great studio and it comes at a good time with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal focusing on Marvel games and Tomb Raider. I wonder if they will continue to crank out content for Hitman.

If you leave a studio on one IP for too long, a lot of the staff starts leaving, so you would likely get notably worse Hitman games overtime.
Or the flip side, they work on a new Marvel action game and decide to try and incorporate those exciting elements into the next Hitman. :( Lose-lose I guess.

Any mention of the new IP has been scrubbed, and there's no archive. Did anyone manage to grab a screenshot by chance?

It now reads like it's a job listing for the Hitman team, not a new IP.

Google cache is a no go, but here's a screengrab from Bing cache, dated 6th of February.
Finally Bing is good for something.

It's a double edged sword. It can be more profitable with the removal of licensing fees but IIRC UE has significantly pulled back on that versus where it was last gen. I think one of the big things many got wrong this gen was not just making their own engines to cut costs in the long term, but they were all happening around the time that CryEngine and UE were fighting for the crown UE held already. I've suspected for the longest time that many of these engines that were in production (Luminous, Panty Raid etc) were also initially intended to be pitched out for licensing too, but failed due to their own complications and left Unity and UE to eat up the market.
