Is anyone else sick and tired of online FPS's because you just constantly get killed?

Firstly, let me just say that I am great at FPS games. I've completed pretty much all the major ones (single-player campaigns) of this gen on normal difficulty.

But whenever I try playing a game online multiplayer, I always end up on the bottom third of the leaderboard for that match. Usually in the bottom 2 people. I don't think I've ever come in the top three for any game with more than 7 people playing.

When I play on Counter-Strike LAN with my friends, it's fine. It's fun as hell as everyone is equally good. But online on Counter-Strike, or whatever, I get shot to pieces constantly and never get a good kills/dies ratio.

I used to think it was my shitty connection, and for a while maybe it was. But now I have a great connection and I still die. Why?

The only game I've ever enjoyed playing online multiplayer was Killzone 2. Mostly because it seemed that I was at least in the same ballpark skill level as the rest of the people on there. Partly because the game allowed you to kill your teammates, which was surprisingly fun and allowed me to experience the thrill of killing in such games.

Am I the only one in this pickle? Does anyone else consistently find themselves at the bottom of the leaderboard in every online FPS they play? The fact that everyone is saying the online multiplayer of BF3 is amazing whilst the single player is crap and 'can be done in a single sitting' makes Your Excellency think he's missing out, but I'll never be able to properly join in because I hate always being shot and shot and shot in online FPS games.

Because you're bad?

Finishing current gen FPS games on normal is hardly a great feat.

People who play online are better than your group of friends.

Need more practice.

i got fairly decent at mag after about 100 hours but generally i agree. i suck pretty bad at most online shooters. battlefield 3 has made me it's bitch. i suck horribly. but i'm going to keep at it since i sucked at mag at the start also. eventually i learned the maps and everything clicked. i went from bottom of the bunch to top 3 consistently. just takes time.

I had a bad time last night with 3/12 K/D on BF3, but ended up with more points than people with 12/1 K/D.

It's almost like you and your friends have similar levels of skill in CS, but when you jump into a bigger venue full of people who have been playing for years, their experience makes them better than you.

Because you don't die in 2 shots like most other FPS. If you don't know the map and all the chokepoints and you're going up against someone who does, you'll die...alot.

That is not a very good measure of skill.

I'm not bad and can end up in the upper tier in most pub CS games, but I've also played the game for 3000+ hours.

Play Team Fortress 2 or Quake Live if you want a game where skill matters. 90% of FPS games released this gen don't require skill. And campaign skills have nothing do with multiplayer skills.

At least play on hard to practice for online. It is tough for me to believe that you are great at FPS games yet you are in the bottom 2 on the leaderboards every game. Pretty contradictory. Anywho, just practice one particular game for awhile until you get better at it. Playing w/ better people will naturally progress you towards getting better at the game, if you try to learn that is. Most people refuse to do this however and then wonder why they never improve...

This is a joke-post right?

Right?

I've beaten all the FPS' I own on the hardest difficulty level and I suck hard at online FPS. Generally...single player experience does not equate to online skill.

Your reality is an interesting one.

You just need more practice or something. SP and MP are different beasts, and they both have to be approached differently. I'm sure everyone started off like you at some point, none of us became good right away for the most part, but you keep at it, learn the ways, and sooner or later you'll be anticipating multiplayer FPS games of your choice so you can go pwn noobs like you once were.

And it feels good.

Hahaha... No.

The only thing I hate about offline FPS campains now is that deaths usually only come by some completely random, cheap encounter. Like, you've killed 40,000 bad guys in Modern Warfare 2 in some cave, but then, oh shit, random guy with a shotgun appears/spawns around you and kills you with one shot. I hate a lot of FPS campaigns because deaths only come now from random useless robot NPCs who employ no tactics, but just show up behind you with a powerful gun.

You just need to play more and play smarter. Too many people play online FPS as if it's quake or UT. If you just run around randomly looking for people to shoot, you are going to get your face blown off. I know everyone hates "campers", but that doesn't mean you should run around like a moron. Take your time and play smart.

Also, learning the maps is pretty key. You have to put yourself in position to do well, not just hope you out-shoot everyone.

It's also possible that you just suck. Sad but true.

Hate to say it, but I agree with the 1st reply. I have some friends who have the same problem, and I admit I have the same problem as well depending on the game and my current gaming cycle.

I think it really has more to do with your familiarity of the levels vs. others. You probably still do good at Counter-Strike because you have been playing that game for years, you know the levels. I think knowing the levels, or at least learning the levels is the single biggest factor in being good at an online shooter. When I'm in a cycle of dying a ton its usually by getting hit from a shooter I can't even see, I'm being flanked or someone is hiding in a spot I didn't know about. After time you learn those spots and you learn where NOT to run so you don't get killed as much.

My friend says he doesn't like Bad Company 2 because he dies within 30 seconds of spawning, but he has also only played a total of 1.5 hours online. I typically end fairly high on the charts, but I also have about 160 hours invested over 3 platforms.

You're good at killing A.I. but not good at killing humans, which are much tougher opponents. Only practice will fix this. Above all map knowledge goes a long way towards general effectiveness.

Something like CoD has far too quick a spawn > die > spawn cycle if you ask me. Q3Arena for example you pretty much cover the maps 3/4 times before dying.

Heck even in UT and Quake it's all about knowing the maps.

Think about the level around you, where shit is, and where people WOULD be, not just "DUDE ON MY SCREEN SHOOT THAT DUDE"

Some games play like meat grinders moreso than others. And if you are playing Objective game types where you have to sacrifice yourself for the greater good, you will die more frequently.

I know the feeling that you are having and I tend to stay away from games where I feel like I am spawning and dying over and over again.

Play Gears 3, you tend to stay alive longer if you are playing with a good squad.

Hell, it's not even an achievement to beat them on hard! Just run from invisible point to invisible point until the next cutscene!

It is however a test in patience.

And to OT: no, not really. But I really have yet to find an FPS where I'd suck really hard.

You are probably just bad. If you are serious about getting better then you need to practice. Make sure you have a good mouse, mouse pad, and keyboard. You probably also have casual binds and configs for all the PC fps games you play. You can still get good at CS but you will need to watch vods and play pugs. Getting good on pubs is easy, just play often.

TF2 doesn't really require much skill on pub servers :\

Also if you're really confused then try to follow other people around so you have someone else nearby to help and you know where to go.

Don't be LONE WOLF COMMANDO who runs off by himself into a narrow side passage and gets shot until you actually know where shit is.

I hate dying in Battlefield because most of the time I have NO IDEA where I'm being shot from. No chance to fight back. Thats why I love Halo. You're usually given the chance to fight back against someone who gets the first shot

lol no , just because you can finish single player campaigns doesn't mean you are gonna be a decent online player , you need to practice , learn all the maps , learn the tactics , learn the moves of your team , and of course fight against lag

Learning the map and basing the other persons position on their current weapon/armour/health while timing the next item respawn?

FPS games would be fun again if that happened.

Like others have said, that does not determine if you are great. I never even touch the campaign on FPS's and am consistently in the top 3 of all the FPS games I play.

Exactly why I love BF games. Im pretty horrible at FPS games (old man hand eye coordination) but I enjoy being a batshit insane medic or engineer who risks like and limb to help out a fellow teammate and rack up points to boot.
