Seriously? something about this event is the worst. I have been invited to go twice now and have passed both times. Twilight was there in the past and a bunch of soccer moms were fighting in line. Every time I see pics I just get angry. Why is there so much shit that has nothing to do with comics and geek culture there? From what I'm told comics are hardly given the attention they deserve at this event which has COMIC in its name. Kiss the fucking ring twilight. Now I'm not about to go judge everybody that goes but last year (I was told) a bunch of GEEKS waited in line for several hours to see goddamn Bruce Campbell talk on stage, WTFFFFF? Has comic-con always been like this? we have to stop this shit.

Yeah, since I've heard every major media outlet "covering" or commenting on Comic-Con, it's the trendy thing to do. So everything goes in there too, fuck it.

I used to want to go to Comic Con so bad when I was younger. Now I'm more interested in Dragon Con. It's closer, more relevant to my interests, and it'll never show up in Entertainment Weekly or Access Hollywood.

My cousin (OBSESSED with Twilight, True Blood, Vampire Diaries) went. That's when I knew this convention was officially over.

Consider all the TV shows, Movies, games, and yes even comics that get hyped at this one individual show. It's highly unlikely they could organize dozens of tiny smaller cons and get the same turnout.

Sure, maybe the "Comic" in comic-con doesn't mean anything anymore, but it's still about acting like a complete idiot for something that you are passionate about, even if everyone else doesn't quite "get it."

Let's break this down.

Have you ever been there?

(._.) said:

Okay, so you haven't. So you're judging this event purely on whatever preternatural biases you have for it. So you're a geek that thinks you're too cool to be "that kind" of geek.

Grrrr, why do people like the things they like!

Because comics are a dying medium, even moreso than television, movies, and books? Why does AT&T still have telegraph in its name? Its a niche-appeal convention that has expanded past its origins.

1. You have judged everyone that goes there.
2. Bruce Campbell didn't beg anyone to wait that long, if anything, he should be commended for having the patience to shit through all of their questions.
3. Yes
4. Who's we?

I think you're missing the point here... The whole atmosphere of this event has changed because it's become mainstream and incorporated. Not to generalize, but when that happens something usually loses its novelty. In this case Comi-Con is losing its novelty.

If I could put it in perspective, it would be like E3 being almost completely about FPS and Guitar Hero or something, because that is what's popular with casual gamers. A bit exaggerated, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head :p

OP, if you watch and enjoy any comic-book related movies, T.V. shows, games, etc etc you are part of the problem.

There is something funny about a subculture being mocked for years finally becoming popular and accepted, and now it hates itself.

People who don't have self-awareness or who purposely ignore it to maximize their own pleasure are mocked in all social communities.

It's not a zero sum game. Small comic con probably had less total number of niche stuff than large comic con does, but people see what's been added, and freak out.

Doesn't bother me who shows up. Figures that at times geeks don't want to be considered geeks but when it comes to geeky things, no one else should be allowed in.

What was the moment that turned this from a regular comic convention to a pop culture event? I know San Diego has always been big on the con scene, but there has to be one movie that debuted there that got the ball rolling and everyone else bandwagoned on. (In gruffy old-man voice): Back in the 80's and early 90's, the only movie stuff shown at any of the comic cons I went to were things like the Star Trek blooper reel.

So you're all upset because you purely based your whole identities and personalities on geek culture, and now that it's universal and mainstream appeal is apparent in media, conventions etc, you now have lost a part of who you are or feel it's no longer 'unique'?

Kinda your fault for filling the huge voids in your lack of personality with early 90s fantasy literature and VHS science fiction then, eh?

I wouldn't say it's a particular event but the evolution of the internet.

It's partially comic's fault. In order to try and survive comics have crossbred into movies, TV and games with a lot of these getting licensed properties to create comics.

I still wish the event focused more on the comics. For the sake of the industry, Comic-Con should be about comics.

I ain't no anthropologist or nothin' but I reckon people don't take too kindly to others fucking with their culture. Even if they base it on things from "early 90s fantasy literature and VHS science fiction" to the bible, qur'an, and torah.

There are a ton of conventions "about the comics" Why can't we have a convention about other things we enjoy?

It happens to nearly all industries. Its not unlike what I experienced as teen with video games. Video games back then was the hobbyist market and trade shows like CES were alot more bearable then E3's. Yeah I do wish life sometimes was like a rock stuck in a stream but mostly it just keep flowing and evolving into something else.

Yeah and that's why most Hollywood movies suck. Having Bruce Campbell in a movie is like having a monkey in a commercial. It just can't be bad.

I have a friend who goes every year, and he says that if you stay away from the megahuge Hall H stuff, there's still a ton of more interesting, niche and geeky panels going on in the small rooms. You just have to know to go to them.

Pretty much. I don't know why I haven't been to Dragon*Con yet. 2 hours away while Comic-Con is on the other side of the country.

E3 is a terrible example for your argument because it has never been about the games.

OP, if you don't like the convention don't go. Don't whine like a little bitch because people enjoy something you don't.
