Nintendo Switch launch is absolutely amazing and beyond anyone's expectation. Also, it should be remembered that its launch is in the non-holiday season. With such high demand and amazing reception even in a quieter period of the year don't you think Switch is going to dethrone PS2 and top 155 million?

It's got a lot of potential. I don't think it's time to compare it to the most successful console ever just yet.

The hype is at a really high level right now but you gotta remember PS2 sold 155million+ units. That's not really easy to achieve anymore in this day. It's too early to say (but very unlikely). It's gonna depend on the support for it in the next years, also by third parties.

Probably not, unless it holds up really, stupidly well.

After all, even the Nintendo DS hasn't topped the PS2. The DS, which got everyone and their grandmother into gaming through its small profile, touchscreen use, and less than traditional games. The DS, which had so many variants and became quite cheap to find.

So yeah, Switch has a long way to go.

Not really......

It's gonna get alotta Japanese support for sure and maybe even a 3rd party Western game tossed it every now and then but....

PS4 has cleary dethroned PS2.

You mean strictly sales? A back to back stream of Pokemon and Monster Hunter and Animal Crossing for Switch would be MASSIVE for sales and make Switch owners so happy.

What a hyperbolic thread, the system hasn't even be out for 3 months and you ask if it is going to dethrone the highest selling console of all time? How can we even judge that when it has been out for such little time?

Yes. It's obviously inevitable.

Switch may not become the best-selling handheld console, but it will become the best-selling home console.

No, it will do well to dethrone Xb1.

The test comes once the Nintendo fans have already bought in and the console has to appeal to casuals and whether the animal crossings / Pokemon can entice buying an expensive hand held.

We are still at the core Nintendo fans buying it (3DS and WiiU), who knows when it will need to branch into casuals - 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 million....IDK, but it will come.

No, I don't see it reaching even 100 million units sold. The economy is not the same as it was during the PS2 era.

Whoa steady sailor, let's just aim for Wii U numbers first.

Damn, noobie. It's been almost a year since your last thread and *this* is how you choose to make a comeback? :p

Short-answer: no. PS2 was anomaly born out of the stars aligning perfectly. No console post the smartphone era can replicate that success.

Please close this topic. You make Nintendo fans look bad when they don't think like this. The PS2 sold 155+ million. Calm down.

Most of the reason PS2 did so well was because it was a good DVD player at a time when it was hard to get a decently priced good DVD player. The time and place was a perfect storm, Switch doesn't have that same incredibly broad appeal

It will dethrone Xbox one if they keep the pace, that's for sure.

Scorpio sales will count as XBOX One sales when everything's all said and done, right?
like... unless console generations are in fact done?
or....
...i dunno, just something I never thought of till now

Depends how they cultivate software and hardware. Is a switch xl coming? And it so, when? Because they cant even keep Switches on shelves yet and that may not change for its entire first calendar year on the market. Ps2 is a lofty goal though.

They don't have the big 3rd party games. They don't have an online presence. You need these in modern gaming to do big numbers. So no, I don't think so.
