Is the TCL 6 Series of 2020 worth buying for gaming?

UPS treated the box like it was a Frisbee I think. The box had some damage. The bottom was almost completely busted of the box. The driver was like. Take it or refuse it. I obviously took the chance. When I set it up, there was just a Crack on the bottom right that you couldn't see unless the unit was on. Damn shame.
She deserved better.
You should have rejected it based on the condition of the packaging.

I've sampled some content to compare the motion processing of my 55R635 to my 55R617 and I've observed that my 55R635 has worse motion processing. Both produce judder during panning shots, but the R635 produces more judder. Also, while the R617 produces no ghosting when characters or objects are moving, the R635 does. The judder and ghosting can be minimized or eliminated by enabling Action Smoothing on either low, medium, or high; however, action smoothing produces the soap-opera effect and the phenomenon by which the edges of duplicated frames are observable. Hence, even though the R635's higher brightness levels and better contrast make 4K-HDR movies look amazing, the inferior motion processing is a bit annoying. So, I think that I'll mainly use my 55R635 as a gaming display and continue to use my 55R617 for movies; hopefully, TCL fixes this issue in a future firmware update.

Thanks for details Bluray. How is the gaming on the new set? I have the 2018 6 series, and I notice ghosting on games like battlefield 1 and v. Was hoping the 2020 model would be a noticeable gaming upgrade.

I've never noticed ghosting, especially in games, on my R617; having said that, I guess the reason is that I don't play fast paced games. Anyhow, as for the R635, the games that I've sampled on it run smoothly, such as Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 5 (PC), and Mass Effect Andromeda (PC).

Yea you would see it in those battlefiled games. Thanks for info brother. But again, is it a visual improvement between the 2 sets? I'm really hoping that there is a visual upgrade with all the new bells and whistles.

The visual upgrades (apart from the motion processing) are huge. Colors are bolder, highlights and general-scene lighting are brighter, and contrast is higher. I sampled my copy of Lucy on 4K-UHD Blu-ray on both TVs and it looks so much better on the R635; I know that this word is used often in regard to TV picture quality, but the picture quality pops so much more on the R635.

As for the game mode, colors look more natural in Ghost of Tsushima rather than super saturated and the response time is noticeably better (e.g. I don't feel any lag when I turn the camera).

Thanks for info, very appreciated. I am excited for it to come. And it sucks to have the TV sitting in its box when it should be plugged in.... Thursday now for new set...

Yep, it's a great TV overall, especially for the price.

My original plan was to give my R617 to my mom after getting the R635. However, I've fallen in love with the R635 as a 4K monitor but still want a separate TV. Hence, I'm keeping my R617 and have therefore ordered another TCL for my mom.

How the hell do you use your tv with action figures in front of the screen? Does picture quality matter when you are distracted by plastic heads? Your opinion is out the window.

The action figures only block the very bottom of the screen, where there is rarely any important information. Also, I don't have any space to display them anywhere else. I actually have even more action figures out of view of the camera and in a box inside of the blue media cabinet.

No, I don't watch foreign films. I don't like having to spend most of my time reading subtitles rather than enjoying the picture in the frame; reading subtitles make watching content a chore rather than an enjoyable experience.

I'm getting conflicting info on the 2020 6-Series. Does it have HDMI 2.1 AND support gaming at 4k 120Hz? All the reviews I'm seeing say it doesn't, but I swore reading the press release it said it did.

Wait, just read it caps 120Hz to 1440p... WTF.

It or the consoles might upscale the 1440p to 4k.

Sorry about that, work busy and my daughter is doing the online schooling with Corona closing schools here in South FL.

Ok, got the TV on Tuesdat a few days early. Yay Amazon. TV is an upgrade to the 2018 6. But... I am a bit disappointed in the THX gaming setting. Its very lackluster on every setting I have tried. Blacks look grayish. Don't get me wrong I am happy to have the extra bell. But I think it needs an update. I am using my tried and true brighter hdr settings as I did on 2018.

I have a vizio dolby atmos sound bar the 5.1 2 version. And I don't quite know what's the best way to synch it to tv. As pass-through or whatever on settings as Amazon app tv and movies sound comes throug not synced. So thats a negative.

But all in all 650 -80 in credits from Amazon is a great buy for a 120 panel. Give it a 7 of 10 so far.

You do know that there is an HDR mode called "HDR gaming," right? It activates gaming mode by default and finely tunes the TV's picture settings specifically for games. I was playing The Last of Us Part II in this gaming mode and it looked fantastic. I didn't notice any grayish blacks.

Yes, I tried game mode THX. And for me, the picture was not as good as brighter HD with game mode on. I did have to reduce color down a bit though. I am glad the setting is there, and that you enjoy it. But compare the 2 and you will see a difference in picture vibrancy, pop, and blacks.

"Game mode" can be toggled on or off in any HDR mode (e.g. "HDR Dark," "HDR Normal", "HDR Bright," etc). However, there is an HDR mode called "HDR Gaming." Did you try that too? Also, what games did you sample and observe grayish blacks?

Yes, I know. I see more pop, vibrancy and blacks look better to me on HDR bright then with gameTHX. Let me know how your using your sound settings. I use a sound bar dolby atmos through the earc. If you do as well, what are you using? And do you get sound delay in some apps like Amazon

I'm not an audiophile. I have a stereo system by Logitech, but it's connected to my 55R617. So, for the 55R635, I'm using the TV's speakers.

I have had a TCL 55R617 since June of 2018, and I have been very satisfied with its image quality. However, I've been waiting for this year's 6 Series so that I could get a TV that supports the new features of next-gen consoles, namely 4K @ 120Hz. However, now that I've learned that the 6 Series doesn't support 4K @ 120Hz, I don't know if I should buy one, even though very few games will support 4K @ 120Hz.
I think you answered the question yourself:
You have a still very new TV which you seem to be happy with and which is missing just one single feature, HDMI2.1 with 4k/120.
The brand new version of the TV still does not have this feature.

This means it just makes no sense for you to buy the new TV.
Yes I agree, the number of next gen games with 4k/120 support will be minimal, but then it still makes no sense to buy the new TV, because your current one has no real disadvantage.

Except you want to upgrade anyway, for example a larger one or so, or the image quality is that much better to justify the buy. Or you would buy another TV which does have 4k/120 by another brand. Or you have so much money and just search for a reason to spend it.

I would probably either get a TV by another brand or wait another year, until that feature is in every decent TV anyway.

You should read through the last two or so pages of this thread; I've already bought the 55R635 and love it.

I bought last year's R617 55 inch version for a secondary TV in my bedroom. I use it for Switch gaming and TATE mode games( mounted on a landscape to portrait Vivo stand. It can do both). For those who are interested in what that TV looks like for classic style Switch games in TATE mode please go to this link: Pictures of TCL in action

I also throw my laptop on there for some retro pc gaming, retro emulation, and TATE games too. I have no major complaints about my purchase since it is being used as a secondary TV. This TCL has served me well for all my needs, and I can only imagine that this years model looks even better with all the other extra advertised features it has to offer.

I moved into a new place last year and was looking to upgrade my main TV too. For me, I'm a bang for the bucks kinda guy. So my main TV is last year's Samsung 65 inch Q70R.

I was looking for a TV with 1440p at 120HZ, along with Freesync, and that TV had the right price/performance ratio for me. I use my main computer on it with 3700X and a 5700XT. (I don't play PC games at a desk) Having said that, Freesync may be good as a whole, but either through the update process on the TV, or AMD's software side on PC, it just doesn't work on the Q70R without flashing or flickering.

So missing out on Freesync even on a TV that has it, isn't such a big deal for me, especially for the trade-off of being able to play 1440p at 120 hz. That's why I say if you're a budget gamer and want to try this new TCL out, I say go for it.

The 2020 6 series seems a lot like last years Q70R series minus the Freesync that doesn't work on Q70R anyway. Plus, it may actually look better than the Q70R and it already is better than last year's Series 6 TV's with all those added features. I will have to wait for multiple reviews before saying that definitively though.

Also, I want to throw this out there to budget gamers. Don't buy insurance on cheaper TV's like the TCL 6 series. I didn't and the TV turned out fine. If you buy it from Amazon, get it out of the box inspect it, and test and return it quickly if it's broken or you got a bad panel. Otherwise don't fear buying TCL.

The motion the 635 is terrible. My 2017 405 model has better motion. TCL may have fixed some areas of this tv but they handicapped it in many others. You're probably better off getting the HIsense H9 or a vizio unless you wanna bug a 2k sony. Just sucks that the hisense and vizio use silly OS

I bought the R635 (55") several weeks ago and I'm well aware that it has bad motion handling for 24p content. The motion on my 55R617 is much better; I'd say that it's perfect minus panning shots, which it still handles better than my 55R635.

However, my 55R635 blows my 55R617 out of the water in every other category (contrast, brightness levels, colors, etc). Furthermore, its motion handling is good for 60-fps content (i.e. games), which is why I'm using it as a monitor for my gaming PC.

I haven't tried it with my pc but with my ps4 I just don't like how the tv feels. I'm debating returning it for something else. I love roku for it's simplicity and tcl tvs for being a good bang for the buck but the tv isn't that much of an upgrade I thought it would be compared to a 625
