Is There Any Fanservice In Western Games For Straight Men Anymore?

Game devs are free to make their game how they see fit. You're free to not buy the game if it doesn't appeal to you.

If I were you, though, I'd just get over it. This is a trend that I don't see reversing itself.

They are free to make it but not free to distribute it, let alone discuss about it

I think there is certainly a trend amongst western dev's to tone down the standards of beauty for female characters, if this was merely an isolated occurrence here and there I don't think there would be a stink or many would care.

Sadly, the vocal minority seems to be almost militant at times in trying to ensure that's not the case, the truely ironic part is often those whom are preaching and protesting have no intention in actually purchasing or playing said games in the first place...:messenger_smirking:

The bulk of us aren't asking for porn model-esqe females in our games only, but some semblence of variety. We love the idealized form in our media, movies, music, and books sexiness and attractivness are abound.

As the old saying goes sexy sells and hopefully western publishers/dev's will again realize that it's not bad to have sex appeal in our, games regardless of the sex/gender you're trying to appeal to.

I love this design from Spacelords. Its weird and sexy.

This character (Ama Nin Dingir?) isnt playable though. I can only hope she will be eventually. I think these devs are Spanish too. I dont know much about Spain, but maybe their culture is less PC than most white countries?

It definitely is.

I watch a lot of Spanish series and movies and they, mostly, don't give two fucks about being PC. It's so refreshing.

Everything he says just feels like it should be common sense, but I am sure there are a lot of places that will find it “controversial” for some dumb reason.

Fantastic interview/podcast
I think this is the single greatest line/thought delivered by that chick:

"personally i think fallowing ugly but of someone would be worse than following nice ass" something akin of that.

I think it point out properly the subject. You are playing games and watch movies precisely because they are not real life.
You don't want to watch 90% of fat people, 1/4 of those with cancer because you have that in real life.

I want sexualization in games, and I want non sexualization in games. Basically I want a game developer to be able to make whatever kind of game they want instead of trying to make a game that wont cause them emotional or political backlash from society. I want a developer to be able to say "Here, we made this game and we hope you like it" instead of "here, we made this game but changed it to suit the public and your overall values and avoid any potential controversy. We hope you enjoy how we went out of our to really show we are as diverse, considerate, and pro whatever the current trend of our society is".

I truly wish our society at large was mature enough, had enough control over its emotions, and had the ability to consider things. But we do not have that society. Our society preaches tolerance in one hand but in the other hand it doesnt tolerate anything. Society tells others what to tolerate but it in itself wont tolerate anything. To tolerate something is to ignore or put up with something you dont agree with or approve of as long as no one is being hurt, anything immoral is being done, or illegal. But society wants to yell, scream, try to ban, and get rid of things it doesnt like instead of tolerating it.

I wish people could just say "I dont agree with that so Im just going to not involve myself with it and instead focus on what it is I do enjoy" but no one will do that.

I also noticed that the "strong women" in most western games are not actually women, they don't act like women and they are devoid of any femininity in their mannerisms, i think the devs just make a male character and then put a female skin on it, for example if you replace Aloy with a generic buff dude you will see that nothing will look out of place with the way he talks or acts, there is no feminine act in the entire game that only Aloy can do and if the buff dude tried to do he will look strange.

When will western companies learn that making a strong woman doesn't mean that she should act like a man.

And a quick news flash: most games aren't designed solely for men.

For gore fetishists of both genders then?

If Tomb Raider and Ocarina of Time's Link were natural evolutions of games like Mario and Pacman, then this art direction is more like the natural evolution of this:

The Prey protagonist looks more like a reject alien enemy mook design than a main character fighting them. Unlike normal ugly, scarred character designs with a likeable expression, or the opposite with attractive faces and edgy expressions, this one really leaves nothing for the imagination as a redeemable trait.

This isn't designed FOR a specific audience. This is designed to turn off a specific audience. It's built around thousands of hours of GDC lectures about the horrors of the male gaze and how to avoid even accidentally creating something it might find cute, pretty, sexy, or even likeable. Even butch faces no longer cut it, you have to add the zombie eyeliner and the random scars and odd polygonal facial shapes.

I love sexy women in games.
My girlfriend (who is pretty sexy too) loves sexy women in games (if they are badass)
So now bring us more sexy outfits !
Maybe it’s a trend to cover the women body in western games but it will come back.
I’m still than we can have extreme violence in movies and games but some boobs are controversial.(especially in the US, in Europe we don’t care)

I also like to point out you can still have beautiful character design even without sexy costumes.

My issue with western character designs is they either make very boring forgettable design or just down right ugly.

I think pre-reboot Lara Croft was a strong feminine woman. She looked like a model (she made it onto the covers of men's magazines), but still maintained a strong demeanour. She was deadly, but her femininity wasn't obscured – in fact it was part of her appeal. That's what helped to make her an iconic video game character.

The utterly forgettable feminist-friendly re-design won't be as fondly remembered.

It goes deeper than that with the Rennaisance and Catholicism. Northern European Rennaisance in visual arts was delayed, different and not as profound, especially in England

Yeah, i also hate that the excuse for making ugly characters is always "we want diversity and characters who look like real women"
Japanese companies are making diverse characters that resemble real women for YEARS but it doesn't count because they are good looking??

I think the white protagonist meme in FPS should be replaced with the ugly woman character model one

Once again, that Prey concept art is misrepresenting the actual game, I don't even remember encountering a scarred black woman, she must be a minor character at best, there are some girls in the game who are actually somewhat cute.

And it has to be said, the game is excellent enough that it's worth putting up with a little SJW flavoring.

Of course, the fact that the devs would make such a hideous piece of concept art in the first place, even if the game itself is toned somewhat from that, does says a lot about the state of things.

Regarding MK this is also due to WB that also affects their video games. Probably an inclusion rider was installed at NRS

https://www.law.com/corpcounsel/201...udio-to-adopt-diversity-and-inclusion-policy/

The new policy does not include specifics but rather states that “in the early stages of the production process, we will engage with our writers, producers and directors to create a plan for implementing this commitment to diversity and inclusion on our projects, with the goal of providing opportunities for individuals from under-represented groups at all levels.”

The company also pledged to issue an annual report on its progress. This element of the plan poses concern for Roger Clegg, president and general counsel at the Center for Equal Opportunity, a conservative think tank devoted to issues of race and ethnicity.

“As long as the focus is on making sure opportunities are there for everyone and that there are no barriers that prevent the best-qualified people from getting a job, there’s no problem,” he said. “The problem comes when we talk about an annual report on our progress. ‘Does progress mean hitting particular numbers?’ Then we’re talking about quotas, and quotas mean discrimination.”

Kotagal acknowledged the risk of quotas but noted that inclusion riders can withstand scrutiny if they are flexible and avoid rigidity.

“It’s important to get it right,” she said of the inclusion-rider contract. “It has to be implemented in a careful and thoughtful and defensible way that involves counsel.”

My god... what the fuck... why did they do that to Jade?

I miss the time when MK had Lia Montelongo and Kerri Hoskins.

It was campy, fun and sexy. Now it is looking like an Isis simulator, with violence and hijabs.

Is it that hard to believe people like sexy design in their games? MK has crazy over the top violence so what wrong people wanting to also have over character design? What exactly so embarrassing about? Should we feel ashamed for liking over the sexy design for over the top fighting game?
Huh? Half her skin is showing and her entire outfit is body fitting. How is that not "sexy"?

Just because it doesn't look like a cheap porn production doesn't stop it being sexy. And the game lets you use her natural skin as a customisation, just in case "evil revenent" isn't your sort of thing.

What is with people? Why have so many people become so reactionary and obsessed with clinging ro the most ridiculous hot takes in every discussion nowadays?

Also lol at the NetherRealm Studio’s community manager response to gamers who want sexy women in MK11.
"I don't want your respect".... Ha. If you didn't want our respect, why go out of the way to dress the girls respectably? That's like a kid saying "Fine. I didn't want to play with you guys anyway." Then he walks off, shoulders hunched, and kicks a rock.

He wants the respect of the SJW crowd, not ours.

But the respect comes with the money and I'm so disgusted by this attitude that I'm not buying this game, at least not at launch. Maybe I'll buy it used. I own every MK and I'm a huge fan but I can't put up with this.... this is so lame.

They are too self absorbed to notice others. Everything they have is theirs, not yours, and that includes respect. The Hitchiker's Guide says, the best way to get a drink out of a SJW is to stick your finger down their throat.

The developer's vision is the most important thing!

...until you start covering up skin on women!!! Then fuck the developer!

With the release of jade now and how she look I think its pretty much confirmed that they are under heavy female censorship. The thing is that I have found some old and interesting video about injustice2 (which is made by the mk team) where one person of their art team talks about the censor - here is the link Its just insane how can you tell art people that this is their job and have atleast 10+ yeyars and more of experience, that they need to censor their view and designs and this is probably coming from people that have no clue about art design. Also that response from the NRS manager was so childish,I think even they know that they have gone too far,to get response from him, something must have hit the truth. I am starting to wonder do NRS gets paid to censor and go that way?? Its so sad because the effects and gameplay were looking good, but if they don't make changes before the game gets released I will not buy it. I don't want to support this censorship. But I think there is hope,I see more people are starting to wake up with the release of jade and understand that something is happening. The twitch chat was going crazy(talking about the full cover up and other designs) at the live release of jade on the kombat kast. And as people say if this continues MK12 is gonna be "burka kombat".

Either you are trolling or you have a very low standards in women that you will fuck any goblin that are willing to give you any attention.

You seem confused, we are not talking about real girls here, we are talking about a 60$ product, a product that should be appealing to customers taste, why should i pay money to stare at an ugly character for 20 hours?

? Well you are also talking about works that are not created for that reason. So, ugly people exist That is just a fact of life that people can and will find some people ugly. You can play a game like this and buy a game for the reason of not seeing um "ugly" people, but that is also
subjective. I don't play games for such reasons, but if you do, its insane to ask anyone to make games that way as you should understand its subjective.....as in, you can like it, want it, but it can't be expected in all games as that is clearly different for everyone. So ugly people exist in real life, I see zero reason why the game should then censor REAL LIFE lol.

Whats next? Only games with tall dudes? no one fat exist? no short people or old people? lol If you are playing a game and you are in a city, does that sound like any damn city you've ever heard of?

What you like to look at is legit creating an extremely unlikely universe. You'd have to say its some sci fi where people can transform how they look, even then its likely some will be against this and still stay ugly for religous reasons. So I don't see any real set up that can just have what you personally like as that just can't be

Hey! First of all *if* I want to jack off to video games... I'm going to fucking do it whether you like it or not!

Second of all, I just want to see sexy bodies in my videogames without blowing my load sometimes. Is that too much too ask?

Edit: Third of all I'm not even asking for it. Just now wondering why a vocal minority is being listened to to stop catering to the straight male audience such as myself.

Why is the argument against fanservice always "you degenerate virgins need to go meet real women"? I mean, I've been with my wife for 25 years and have two kids. I may be a degenerate, but I'm not a virgin, and I'm in a long term, committed relationship with a female human being. Truth be told, I'm almost certainly more well adjusted, sexually, than the people arguing for less fanservice.

If you wanted to be more truthful in your argument against fanservice, it would look something more like:

I have ISSUES. Because I am incapable or incompetent, I'm going to FORCE everyone else to deal with my INSECURITIES so that I never have to spend a MOMENT in self reflection and understand why I TRULY feel the things that I feel, which is: I also think fanservice is SEXY, but I'm AFRAID that if I were to ever ADMIT this, it would make me look WEAK and like the VIRGIN I accuse everyone else of being. By DENYING my true NATURE, I see myself as strong and virtuous, despite looking like a FUCKING IDIOT to normal, well adjusted people.

The argument is always to run down other people because of some feeling of superiority.
You need to get out and talk to a REAL woman like a REAL man. Haha. Feck off.

Like you said, that probably is an overcompensation to hide some insecurities.

I think most of us understand that we will not end up with some super-hot hollywood actress, probably couldn't even snag a middling Instagram model and that's fine. There's no shame in saying I am attracted to women that would not even give me the time of day. No shame in realizing your place in the grand scheme and accepting the closest you'll get is "just looking". So long as you treat the women in your life with care and respect you can have a wee glance at hotties once in a while.

Knowing your place is better than pretending that it's actually really pathetic to be attracted to hot women while trying to impress some blue-haired, diabetic, hambeast with how much you hate objectification.

Some lads can't handle it though so they overcompensate BIG TIME with a big show of how much they care about portrayals of women in media while also making a show of how women can also do whatever they want.

Don't you dare be looking at hot ladies, that's immature. If a lady wants to make a big public show of being hot? Well don't you DARE question that.

I always laughed at Kotaku for doing this thing where they'd have writers bemoaning the fact that women in games are over-sexualized but at the same time they'll be running cosplay articles where women are dressed up like the over-sexualized characters of yesteryear.

You can almost see them running "Jade's new look in MK11 shows how the industry is growing up" right alongside "check out this awesome old-school Jade cosplay from famed cosplayer Bigtitties McGee".

On one hand we need to cover up women in games and all you virgin nerds need to get with the program.
On the other hand you'd better respect the rights of cosplayers to dress however they want.
Mixed messages.

I wonder if it's grounded in the idea of consent.
The cosplayer can wear whatever she likes and is not obligated to cover up because her body her choice. Fine.
The fictional character, on the other hand, can't consent to being "forced" to wear a sexy outfit so that's not cool. Maybe?
