The only possible reason I can come up with for the horrid official box is that EA (or Valve) required that all three new games be visually represented on the front, not counting text blurbs. Why they went with such a terrible design is a mystery though, considering Valve has some of the best artists in the business.

Can't understand why companies can't produce box art that good. It would definitely stand out in a store by not being one of those overcrowded generic boxarts, like the one in the OP.

I prefer this, it's cleaner and classier with just the logo. I got the US version of FFIII DS because it had the plain white behind the logo and not the messy art of the European release (the art is fine, but not with a logo slapped over it, it turns into a mush of washed out colour).

TF2 is going to have to make the front cover in more than just word form. The official box-art wouldn't be too terrible if they just could come up with a better logo for Portal. Right now it just looks like it belongs on a janitor caution sign or something.
