what would be your 10 - NO HONORABLE MENTIONS!

edit - this is not a "10 games only for the rest of your life" question. just "what games would you choose during those 10 years"

jesus theres SO many good games - so hard to pick.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I think most older PC games have aged horribly, so... I have a tough time finding even 10 that I'd actually want. The pre-3D accelerator era was rough.

Diablo
Doom
Doom II
Rise of the Triad
Earthworm Jim: Special Edition
Quake
Quake II
Duke Nukem 3D
Jedi Knight, I guess?
uh.... hmmm.... Tomb Raider 2? Man, I don't know.

X-Wing (1993)
DOOM II (1994)
Command and Conquer: Red Alert (1996)
Duke Nukem 3D (1996)
Tomb Raider (1996)

Do you include Amiga too?

Prince of Persia 1
Prince of Persia 2
Loom
Elvira Mistress of the dark
Elvira 2 Jaws of cerberus
Waxworks
Jazz Jackrabbit
Slamtilt Pinball
Bad Mojo
Phantasmagoria 1

Damn, one more year and you got the two greatest games of all time (starcraft and half life)

If I had to pick three, it would probably be HOMM2, Curse of monkey Island, and Total Annihilation.
heheheh thats why i made the cut at 97 - 98 started a new boom plus the quality of of 3d games started taking off around there

:p

this list could be way way longer, i had to cut a lot of favorites

yup - SO tough. i went back and forth numerous times cutting and adding. decided to go along with more nonstalgia factor than "best reviewed game"

I think you went in the wrong direction, OP :messenger_squinting_tongue: I am going to mostly ignore story-heavy, dialogue-heavy games and focus on stuff that will last me. So in no particular order:

936337-screen3.png
3907-doom-dos-front-cover.jpg
1197-descent-ii-dos-front-cover.jpg

Total Annihilation - for my RTS fix
Nethack - for my roguelike fix
DOOM - for my FPS fix
Descent II - for my "six degrees of freedom" fix

Star Control II - for my epic space opera fix

I really would have a different list if '98 was included. (SC, HL, and Grim Fandango)

DOOM
Duke Nukem 3D
DOOM II
Betrayal at Krondor
Shadow Warrior
Masters of Orion II
Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries
Jagged Alliance
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Age of Empires

Assuming PC hardware is not an issue (as it was for me during those years) I'd go for the GOTY of each of one of the years and be done with it.

Special shout out to Sierra Online for their somewhat dedicated support of Mac games in the early to mid 90's.

I AM AN IDIOT WHO INCLUDED A 90'S ARCADE GAME (NARC) IN MY FIRST REVISION. I HAVE AMENDED IT WITH FREDDY PHARKAS

i had the Mortal Kombat 2 CD release. that looked so good, and it played great too. what an amazing port. Super Street Fighter 2 CD port was also really good. PC was blessed in the 90s.
Space Quest 1 (The Sarien Encounter- VGA remake)
Space Quest 4 (Roger Wilco vs The Time Rippers - CD Talkie version)
hell yeah. Space Quest was fun. i had both of these, they're great. almost put Space Quest V: The Next Mutation on, which was my first. the game came with a fake tabloid magazine, a parody of "Bat boy lives!" style Weekly World News mags, all with sci fi jokes. i used to take that to school and read it w my friends during class, it was hilarious.
kicking myself i left this off my list. one of the all-time greats.

I’ve never really been a huge PC gamer, so 10 may be difficult. That being said, I would choose what I’ve played:

The Journeyman Project
Alien Nations
The Dig
Day of the Tentacle (with Maniac Mansion)

I don't need 10 games.

Civ 2
Age of Empires
Diablo
Anstoss 2 (a german football manager, the best one ever)

This is what I played on my brother's PC all day until he came back home from work in the evening, then I watched him play or we played together. Good old times.

In no particular order:

Resident Evil
Thief
Age of Empires II
Doom
Diablo
Bladerunner
Tomb Raider II
Sim City 2000
4D Boxing
NBA Hangtime

EDIT: Replaced Blood with Diablo.

Fucking great thread. Hitting me hard in the nostalgia bone - these were my teen years. Need a think to come up with my list - OP you’ve basically identified a PC “gen” with this q.
Yeah my teen years too.

Very clever to avoid 1998 also with all the big guns.

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
1997 is what we call a beast year in gaming, Star Fox 64, Goldeneye 007 look at those two games alone, best FPS of all time, I don't see a year in gaming topping this year.

Worms
Worms II
Lemmings
Scorched Earth
SimCity 2000
Warcraft
Warcraft II
Star Wars: Tie Fighter
Doom II
Mechwarrior II

Included a couple of games in the same series just because I couldn't think up of 10 off the top of my head. Scorched Earth was a high school favorite when the teacher wasn't paying attention or we had time to kill.

Damn this is a tough question because of the sheer volume of good games to choose from. I'm gonna have to go with my absolute favs that still get regular play time to this day, most of which showed up in the 90's. Plenty of great games in the latter part of the 80's too (Sierra adventures like King's Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, etc) but I decided to go with games that, as I said, still get played regularly with modern games today. Hell, before seeing this topic, I was playing through Doom for the millionth time, with the Brutal Doom mod and that was after spending some time on Monster Hunter World.

Doom
Doom 2
Quake
Quake 2
Diablo
Full Throttle
Warcraft 2
Command and Conquer
Mortal Kombat
Blood (was gonna say Star Wars Dark Forces but I personally think Blood flows a bit better in level design)

Heh, well I was definitely hitting the FPS hard and there was no lack of choices when the genre exploded on PC after Doom. Like someone mentioned, even after 97 the train kept on rolling and we ended up with Half Life, Unreal, Unreal Tournament...a lot of gems that are also installed on my computer right now.

Holy crap. This is my favorite era of gaming, bar none. The 1990s-PC is my happy place, gaming wise. Let's see.

TIE Fighter
Ascendancy
Age of Empires
Heroes of Might & Magic II
Wing Commander
Theme Park
Stunts (also known as 4D Sports Driving)
Civilization II
1942: The Pacific Air War
The Need for Speed

This list could go for ages, seriously. My 486 DX2 66 Mhz (with 8 MB of RAM!) is by far my favorite gaming machine ever.

Interesting that people are saying the PC MK2. It sucked. The PC port of MK1, on the other hand, was amazing. It was basically perfect other than the lower quality MIDI music.

Cannot believe that Broken Sword hasn't made the first page!

I will get back with my list but it deserves a mention before I do!

Monkey island
Fallout
Diablo
Blade runner
Broken sword
Command and conquer
Carmaggedon
Heroes of might and magic
Thief
Age of empires.

This thread has made me sad. Think about the genre-defining, life-changing games that released in 87-97. Now think of the games that released from 09-19...it' s not the same
