It's time to choose the greatest song from Sonic R

Hard mode: "ALL OF THEM" isn't a valid answer.

There's 7 tracks. They're all ridiculously catchy, energetic yet dreamy pop songs. They all seem perfectly aware of Sonic CD's Sonic Boom being the most beloved vocal Sonic track at the time of release, and they all seem to be gunning for that crown. Together, they form the greatest vocal original soundtrack of any video or computer game ever released.

You can deny this, but look, you've heard Super Sonic Racing and you probably didn't even play this awful game for more than twenty minutes at most. That's how good the soundtrack is. It's fucking transcendent. It's up there with the Cheetamen II music and the rap from Rogue Warrior.

Anyway: the songs!

My vote goes to Back in Time, because... I'm not sure. Feelings, man. Also, the Sky Sanctuary/Back in Time mix from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is just marvellous.

Tails Doll added for good measure.

Super Sonic Racing is always my favorite, especially the remixes it gets. Especially loved the Generations' remix, it was kind of neat they thrown in the Sega Saturn promo as part of the song... and it works!

(And it's the perfect song when you fight Time Eater, one of the 3DS missions had you fighting Time Eater until a time limit and it played that.)

I'm going to have to defy your instruction and go with all of them.

I was planning to keep editing my posted every hour, on the hour, to cover the gamut... but I just can't dedicate the rest of my life to being that right about something.

All of them.

All.

Mecha Knuckles, hell yes.

This is like choosing which Knuckles rap from the Sonic Adventure games is my favorite.

Yeah Back in Time is probably the best

Everyone knows SA1's Unknown from M.E. is the best Knuckles rap song!

er

no wait

Pumpkin Hill

er...
no

wait

..damn it!

Man, this is one of the hardest choices I've had to make in my life

Gonna go with Living In The City, but tied with Can You Feel The Sunshine at the moment

ALL OF THEM!

Honestly, I'm pleased to learn that I'm not the only one to enjoy those songs (even if they are rather cheesy). Super Sonic Racing is my favorite (especially its remix in Generations by Cash Cash).

"Livin' in the City".

Also, "Super Sonic Racing" isn't just the title theme, it also is Radiant Emerald's theme, provided you're playing as Super Sonic at the time.

Can You Feel The Sunshine was a very, VERY close second for me.

Edit: on the other hand I don't feel I add anything to this conversation.

:lol Aww. It is overwhelmingly 90s, so when people say it sucks I can't exactly be amazed by that response, but hell if I don't find it endearing in how 90s it is.

Ugggh! DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE ;A;

...Also I actually genuinely enjoyed Sonic R, yeah it's too damn short and you can finish it in like 20 minutes but it's a game I loved to stick on and play after a shitty day, racing about and singing to dat europop.

It's going to end up a fight between Can You Feel the Sunshine and Super Sonic Racing anyway. But I actually like Diamond in the Sky. Paired with the original Saturn visuals (the PC verison sort of does away with the really cool transparency effect managed on the Saturn version...) it really does suit the level so well. Plus somehow making a slower song fit the racing.

CAN YOU FEEL THE SUNSHINE
DOES IT BRIGHTEN UP YOUR DAY~
DON'T YOU FEEL LIKE SOMETIMES
YOU SHOULD JUST STOP MAKING GAMES~

I legitimately love this game's soundtrack though, as cheesy as it is.

"... and today.... it's gonna be a brighter day"

what rhymes with today? yeah I know, how about day!
lyrical genius right there

"Livin' in the City".

I thought that played on Radiant Emerald. Don't really recognise Diamond in the Sky outside of listening to it on Youtube.

Was Number One, or an instrumental version of it at least, used in either Mega Collection + or Gems Collection in the menus somewhere?

Back in Time is my favorite.

IMHO, they are actually house, not pop. Some of them are even acid house. Work it Out most notably, but you can hear a little bit of the acid sound in Back in Time, too.

I think most people do! I think most of the ironic love has been replaced by genuine goofy love at this point. I find it hilarious there's a Sonic racing game filled with insane Europop, but damn if I don't find it endlessly listenable. :lol

Number One is used in the credits sequence every time you finish the game. EVERY TIME. Also pretty sure Number One was never sampled again, unless it was used in Sonic Chronicles which Richard Jacques also scored.

All I need is you! For always and forever!
All you need is me! Remember when I say!
All we need is love, for us to be together!
'Cause you're my number one!

Work it out.

But it's really hard to chose just one, so I'm gonna play normal mode and say "All of them" :)

Dammit, Coldman. I told you it was hard to choose.

With that said, I love this soundtrack as a whole. I have an utterly guilty pleasure for late 1980s-1990s dance, so if I hear anything that remotely sounds like that, I'll probably more than likely like it, despite the fact that it's cheesy as hell. There's something about that general sound that makes me smile, almost to the point of possibly nostalgia, but also because the tone and lyrical content has some sort of levity associated with it.

With that said, perhaps a tossup between Work It Out (which sounds so deliciously 90s that it's hard to resist it--reminds me a lot of Love Inc, Robin S, Nightcrawlers, etc.), and Can You Feel the Sunshine (because it's so damn fun to sing along to).

...If Coldman put a gun up to my head and said, "Effing choose! >:(", I'll go with Work It Out.

Ah, right.
I remember the intro but not the lyrics, and I've only finished Sonic R once. Must've stuck with me for some reason ha ha.

Can we all agree that Work it Out is the least-good of them?

Living in the City used to be my undisputed favorite for years but then I realized just how good Back in Time and Diamond in the Sky are.

Back in Time is the best.

Screw you Coldman, you don't run me!

All of them.

If I absolutely have to choose
I choose
Back In The City of the Super Sunshine Racing in the Sky

Work It Out is actually the track I forget about most from this game (bar Number One), because I think it blends into my aural memory of the 90s so perfectly. It's such a spot-on example of what a lot of music sounded like back then (whereas the rest of soundtrack would probably stick out a little on 90s radio or a workout mix or whatever). It also makes it hilarious that it was ever in a Sonic game, of course, but shit, that's order of the day with Sonic R.

Great track, anyway. Going in I was actually wondering if anyone at all would say Work It Out.

Screw you Coldman, you don't run me!

All of them.
