Everyone, today. It is Nintendo Co. Iwata.
You call Wii, so far it is not, it is full in the new proposition where hard
Just whether it was made in some kind of intention, on the basis of the voice of the person who relates to development on site,
That little by little from this day we would like to keep us conveying to everyone, thought
(Perhaps there are no most front examples) had decided to begin unique serialization in world.
That by your gather information from the employee of your own company, is the attempt which you say, changes somewhat, but
Me myself, details and the background which can produce the machine, Wii,
You verify through the voice of the developer, would like to leave freshly securely there is also the thinking that.
With only the party that not being able to ask there is a large quantity because you think,
Please, we ask may.

第1回「最先端の技術を、これまでにない使い方で」

Iwata I am to think, with Wii which you complete as before, but
Normally, when it tries probably to make hard the game is new,
As for any such things you think that certainly it is not possible, it is.
Why Wii becoming such machine?
As for those which are called under some thought Wii being possible?
That, through this serialization we would like to keep us conveying.
First, generalizing the whole project, you ask to Taketa which you saw.
When most first “it probably will make such hard”, that thinking, is,
And, looking at Wii which finally is completed, please teach thought and the like.

Taketa As for the development of Wii starting,
The game cube being done, release immediately time is.
As for us, when one hard becomes shape
Directly, however it is to be the case that it starts thinking of the following machine,
The proper, they are not all parts and the case that it starts technology from [ichi],
It does not keep designating the technology which is society as the base the [te] does not become, it is.
When with saying, in the world of technology the generally known road map
(Technology of the schedule which in the future is released and the diagram and the plan which collected the product)
With being the case that it is some which are said,
Does technology of the semiconductor in the future evolve into some direction?,
As for evolution of the disk and the wireless faces to some direction,
Rough estimate, is the case that it is built in individual industry.
As for the general technician and the developer, while to refer that road map,
In the future, it is the case that it keeps making the machine which release is done, but
When now, you try looking at Wii which is completed freshly,
The machine which is in regard to extension of the road map of general technology
Don't you think? completely it became the machine which differs there is an impression that is.

Iwata Why, you think that it became the machine which is not in regard to extension of the road map?

Taketa This becomes paradox thought, but
If the former road map is stood on that way,
You think that “it was faster, compared to it became the manner, gorgeousness”, it is.
In other words, with the direction that it starts projecting luxurious image fast, the shank.
But, that it advanced to the direction, assuming
That, you felt there probably is an impact of some extent in the customer, it is.
When making more luxurious, hardship and cost of development side and,
It is new in the customer, you make feel trick of efficiency of the thing.
It reached the point where such ones, are felt in the middle of developing.

Iwata That was felt when around the empty?

Taketa After beginning the development of Wii, about 1 years the time where it passes probably will be?
When keeping speaking with the company which becomes the partner of development it is to feel keenly, but
“Better ones!”With it keeps seeking from the manner which is said
Demand of the people does not have criticality, it is with the shank.
The person who obtains 1 obtaining 2 next,
When 3 it says that it seeks next, so not to be, the [te],
5, 10, 30, 100. with in the manner which is said,
Demand accelerating keeps rising, it is.
When it keeps pursuing there, it becomes outrageous thing.
It starts feeling strange feeling there developing, about 1 years the time where it passes is.

Iwata Then, from concrete
You ask to the salt field which has related to the technology of Wii.
First, it makes explain simply you had taken charge of what?

Salt field It is. The fact that I take charge is development of the semiconductor in this Wii.
With saying, as for development of the semiconductor
Because it is not the case that Nintendo Co. manages directly,
The company which becomes the partner and it started developing together.

Iwata As for development of the semiconductor, when deciding the efficiency of the new machine,
You think that it becomes the very big factor.
Expecting development at the beginning of Wii and, between those which are completed,
Being different or the fact that etc it is not different, please teach.

Salt field When you call to the large [zu] biting enormously,
As for essential technology of the part which becomes base of the semiconductor,
It does not change that much with any machine, it is.
Simply, method of using the essential technology is different depending upon the machine.
Wii freely uses generally known leading semiconductor technology, but
Method of using the leading technology,
It is different from the other machine largely, it is.
Because is, in the part that you use leading semiconductor technology,
However it did not deviate from the expectation of development beginning largely,
Those which the part of method of using expected it has become the shape which is different.

Iwata Concretely, it probably is what thing?

Salt field Some time ago, it was even in Taketa story, but
Normally, when it tries probably to keep using new semiconductor technology,
It keeps advancing to the direction which gorgeously, with is said to higher performance.
If you refer to CPU, steadily it tries to raise operational ability.
Use electric power increases and, also the tip/chip becomes large.
In order to make that actualize, naturally, high semiconductor technology is required.
But, the leading semiconductor technology,
If there is also a method of using which is directed to the luxurious kind of direction which now was said,
Completely it is the case that it is also the selection that it is used in another direction.
For example, if you use the same leading technology,
It can do “to make the tip/chip small,”.
With Wii utilizing technology in such direction,
Electric power consumption of the machine is made as much as possible small, it is.
If the tip/chip becomes small, it is possible to make the size itself of the machine small.
Making the tip/chip small, if you hold down electric power consumption low,
It becomes possible to turn on power with anytime, it is.
While using leading semiconductor technology same as the other machine,
The use differs largely, it is such.

Iwata Generally, the technician who dislikes the fact that it is the high performance thinks that it is not.
Is called in the midst of and Wii developing directivity of the machine which,
Always, unless it faces to high performance, when being decided,
There was no trouble as a technician?

Salt field There is a trouble, the better seed. When you say more honestly, insecurity you felt.
It does that it is different from the road map it means that after all courage is and.
Especially, “just doing what with this machine?”
Still as for the time where it has not been visible, insecurity was large, is.
As for the hurdle itself that, it makes electric power consumption small, it is possible to exceed.
Actually, at the stage whose development is quick, the prospect that electric power consumption is held down passed.
However, unless it is clear whether that in some manner in the game life it finishes that
After all, insecurity and trouble do not go out, it is with the shank.
Because is, this selection by mistake is not, that as for can be convinced,
“Everyday, something you call the machine where new thing occurs”
After being struck out in the form which the concept of Wii is clear is.
Because 24 hours, it is the case that by the fact that it turns on electricity that becomes possible.

Iwata Until Wii becomes such machine, in distance,
As a turning point of development
Is there an occurrence which remains in impression?

Salt field So, don't you think? is, the time where it has made strenuous efforts to making electric power consumption small,
When leading semiconductor technology is used,
The notion that electric power consumption of the former machine how becomes,
It has tried simulating it is.
When it does, when this technology is made to apply to the game cube,
The semiconductor which electric power consumption has used with the game cube
It was found that from 1/4 it becomes 1/3.
When looking at the result, this is enormous, you thought that is.
Of course, as for that simply also you have been surprised as a data, it is, but
It is instantaneous feels the originality of the company, Nintendo Co., it is.
Normally, when making the new machine,
“The so far compared to does CPU become no time fast?
Is memory stacked no time? Is polygon indicated no time?”
With it is the case that it keeps competing in the part which is said, but as for Nintendo Co.
“Being able to point so far to the same thing, it can designate electric power as some 1?”
With it is the case that it does the argument which is said.

Iwata Why such argument was possible, it is probably will be?

Salt field After all, Nintendo Co. the company, the usual,
“We would like to do the new thing where something we would like to do that it changes,”
Because with it continued to think, is not, probably will be?
So is even in inside and, directing to the other company
Because such message was made always,
The company which becomes the partner of development,
The nature it reached the point proposing new technology and idea.
In such environment, you call Wii
“When it makes normally, the machine which is not produced” was born, you think that it is.

Taketa It is proper thing, but efficiency back burner, with is not the case that it is said, it is.
“Low performance, low power” is possible anyone.
Toward “high performance, the other people aim high power”.
Among such, as for us with Wii
“Low power, it is the case that it pursues that, high performance”.
However technically and efficiency it is the leading edge,
The direction which you aim is different from the former machine completely, don't you think? it is.
For example trying thinking of the evolution of the automobile,
Everyone lining up on the straight line, it is not the case that it is advanced.
Although speed is rivaled, attention worldwide has focused in the hybrid car.
As for evolution of former game machine,
Basically, you think that power of the engine was rivaled, it is.
However, it is not the case that all cars appear in F1.

Salt field As produced the new axis, the hybrid car environmental efficiency,
Wii thinks that new value was discovered.
With saying, it is not the case that “it got off from technical competition”.
On the other hand, technically about the mountain it stuffs high-level thing.

Taketa Leading technology is used in the direction which is not so far,
Using the technology, simply aiming toward the high performance compared to
It is difficult considerably, being complicated, it means that technical power is.
Even system Wii [nintendou] 64 and the game cube
The extent which does not become comparing ones it has become complicated.
Furthermore, because Wii has the game cube and compatibility,
Not only aiming toward new thing, it does not leave either the function of former times and does not become.
Honesty, was not simple thing, but
You can propose to society with self-confidence,
You feel that the machine which is full in new charm was produced.

Very interesting that the WiiConnect24 aspect of the console is pretty much the highest priority. I'm excited to see what they do with this. The prospect of an instant boot with a remote like controller is great though, and very casual. I can imagine using it when standing up and getting ready for work, similar to how I would use the TV.

In all honesty I really don't see what makes WiiConnect24 such a big deal. Reggie's examples are really dumb, and would not require an always on connection AT ALL. That said, Reggie is frequently off-base when it comes to actual gameplay matters. Still, I haven't really heard many awesome examples from anyone else either in terms of stuff that couldn't be done with a regular service like Xbox Live.

Of cource WiiConnect24 is Nintendo's #1 priority.
WiiConnect24 is Nintendo's money train.

With WiiConnect24, it's like Nintendo is going to be giving 24/7 anal rape to every single one of its customers. That is Nintendo's dream.

We are going to be seing micro transactions for everything.
Get the anal loob ready, you have no idea the ravage that Nintendo has in store for its customers.

Ahhh Nintendo, the Uncle Scrooge of the Gaming industry.

So they ran some simulations: if they used GameCube level hardware, how much more efficient could they make it? They found out that it would be 1/3 to 1/4 the power.

So rather than think "how can we make X better?" they thought "how can we make X take up less power?"

They then start to talk about hybrid cars and how if the car industry was like the game industry every car would be an F1 racer.

Let's hope tomorrows piece is (a lot) better....

Even the trivial ideal of the LED blinking when you receive a message is a huge step above the 360. It means that people will actively seek to turn on the Wii (with the handy remote) rather than being told they have a message when they are actually starting to play a game. Sending a message to say 'come online and play' has much more relevance with this system.

With Animal Crossing it is a great idea as well. The idea of making your save game data available to other copies of the game and letting them explore your town when you're away, this is awesome. It could be done with the 360 but you'd have to upload your save game data to microsoft's server, and things would go weird if you start playing before 'resyncing'. This would be useful for any sort of data sharing process, so people can peek into your game and see your Nintendogs or whatever.

On the DS how are you going to really download anything even if there was stuff to download? I mean it is not like there is a mem card slot for data backup. There is not really a place to store any downloads, that kind of download system just is not setup for DS.

But Nintendo Wii is set up for that. So now that Nintendo has the chance, you can bet your ass (and in a way you are) that Nintendo is going to take full advantage of it.

The problem I see, is that the anybody who uses WiiConnect24 will have broadband. The Wii only has 512 of built in storage. So, you could essentially have a mail-type system, where all the new information would be downloaded in a burst to your Wii as you boot up. This kind of kills the idea of WiiConnect24. I can understand how it would be useful if there was a constant stream of uploading/downloading, but I can't really think of anything that would need it at the moment.

Technically your Wii with the Wii Connect24 could become a DS Download Station in your home.

what's the value of low power consumption in a console, and what could conceivably be the point of this wii connect 24 business? did they really decide on a gamecube redux before they'd decided on an unusual controller? very strange.

Well the low power consumption seems to be a combination of small form factor and being able to leave it on 24/7 as a receiver for whatever Nintendo is planning. I have no idea what they need that for though. Maybe they are planning on letting people run game servers.

As well as the obvious downloading while you are away thing, WiiConnect 24 turns every Wii into it's own file-server.

Messaging, highscore collection, data-sharing and lots of other things can then all be done without the need for central servers. Allowing Nintendo to keep costs down and offer the service for free. The low-power consumption is part of this, as no one would want to leave their console in standby/WiiConnect 24 mode if it consumed half the national grid to do so.

Well, there is the rumour that Nintendo will be using the Broadway CPU in their next handheld - because of this low power consumption maybe it's possible?? ...as well as the WiiConnect 24/7 thing - the console is always on.. Low power = less overheating problems.

I don't see the point of WiiConnect24 because in the last ten years Nintendo had serious problems with providing continuously contents for its home consoles, a part from launch period times, so I see this feature falling apart as GameCube modem/broadband plug-ins.

In all honesty I really don't see what makes WiiConnect24 such a big deal.

Examples...

You're an Animal Crossing player. With Connect24, your friends can visit your village at any time of the day, without you even needing to be home, let alone playing.

The often mentioned but still awesome download station. Come home after a day at work to find a new DS or Wii demo ready to play. Better yet, come home and find new furniture in Animal Crossing, a new course in ExciteTruck and so on, so on...

As a server. You might be able to run a Call of Duty server exclusively for your friends 24/7 with little to no effort. You might want to create decals or courses for Mario Kart and serve them 24/7.

You're sitting on your couch watching TV when your controller beeps. Turns out it's your friend wanting a game of Madden. Press the power button and you're ready to go.

That's obviously just scratching the surface. Make no mistake, Connect24 is a huge innovation. With it Nintendo aren't just doing online, they're at the forefront of it. It's one of those things that seems so obvious yet is so brilliant that it's hard to understand why it took someone so long to actually do it. To be honest, I'm every bit as excited for it as I am for the controller.

See if Nintendo actually pull out stuff like this, then I'm all for it. However, I'm unsure to what extent they are going to do all this. The GameCube's lack of peripherals (even though there were ports available), along with the the DS's clunky wifi, and the rumours of Nintendo not providing 3rd parties with the documentation to go online makes me wonder how strongly they will push this.

Making it a key (and built-in) feature of the hardware and the way they seem to deliberately gloss over it at E3 makes me think it's the main thing they have more to reveal about.

We'll find out on Wednesday.

This is what makes me think they are pushing it. They want developers to focus on WiiConnect24, moreso than standard online gameplay. Why? I can think of a few reasons, mainly that its one of the only exclusive and unique features Nintendo has for their online gameplan. Anytime a developer is asked about online play, they usually say they don't know, or they can't talk about it right now. But when asked about WiiConnect24, they almost always say they are looking to use it in some way. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is almost making it a requirement for every game to somehow use this feature, because from the support its getting it sure seems like it.

I'm too worried about the use Nintendo might give to this feature. I remember how Nintendo were saying they'd send you thiongs in AC. After six months with the game I've received like... two items.

Nintendo has a lot to prove for online, could make or break the system. Friendcodes is terrible, and they're reusing it in Wii... they need to at least universalize it for a start, along with these other 'innovations' they're pimping for it to be acceptable... I'm bred on XBL, so there's a lot for it to live up to. The no third party having online documentation is a bumpy start, though.

Again that's hampered by the way WFC on the DS works, you have to first go online during a set period to receive anything. A lot of items would go completely unnoticed by most people even if they were being released regularly.

The fact they can be sent on Wii without the player having to do anything and always be delivered will encourage Nintendo and other developers to do it more I think.

I don't think Gamecube's really a factor; that was old Nintendo and this is new Nintendo. As they've proven with the DS they're taking a much more aggressive approach to online (even if in the case of the DS they aren't implementing it particularly well). In terms of documentation that might actually be a good sign rather than a bad one. There seems to be something of a perception going around that the reason Nintendo wouldn't be supplying documentation for the speaker and for online is because they aren't that interested. I think it's more likely they're simply still working on it, which hopefully indicates that a lot of work is going into it.

But yeah, Nintendo do have a remarkable knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, so who knows?
