Iwata: New StreetPass Plaza games generated ¥400 million ($4 mil) in only a month

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
One month has passed since we added these new StreetPass Mii Plaza games, and we did not use any type of mass advertising. It was written on our homepage, with information about all the new content included in the update. You are also made aware when you visit the StreetPass Mii Plaza for the first time after the update, but we didn’t use anything like television commercials to advertise.

However, in this state, we have generated a lot of income from our customers. Furthermore, a lot of the people who are playing and enjoying the new games are communicating and advertising through outlets like Twitter. Thanks to this, the circle of customers is growing bigger and bigger, and interestingly, sales were a strong ¥400 million in only a month.

FYI: The new StreetPass games came out on June 19th in Europe and Japan, July 12th in US. Moreover, 400,000,000 Yen should be a little more than 4 millions $.

uh-oh. i get the feeling that they're going to assume they don't need to properly advertise some things moving forward.

on the other hand, wonderful 101 wasn't really going to ever sell that much.

Imagine if a console just used Twiter for all text communication, and worked with hash tags.

Pretty impressive. I'd like to mess around with these games one day, but it turns out it's hard to get StreetPasses in rural Kentucky.

Only works best in areas that are populated with StreetPass users.

yes, but the old update that allows you to "purchase" (with ingame coins) old companion (for the adventure games at least) solved a big part of the problem.
don't know if the other new games are like that or playable only if you streetpass a lot.

that works out to over 800,000 of those $5 games being sold. i say over, because they had the deal where you buy the three good ones, and get flower town free.

Actually, given how these games successe without that much of an advertising, they started advertising them in Japan.

Well I think Nintendo games can benefit from word of mouth (especially small projects like this). However, considering the commercials and other material they seem to have been preparing for their Wii U titles, I don't think they'll go with this approach for Wii U (they've seen how that's gone for the past 8 months or so). $4 million isn't too shabby for those games though.

So roughly, maybe something like 75,000 unique players in JP, 75K in US, and 50K in Europe and Australia...? In a month.

Is that good?

PS that was ice cold lol. Poor Grezzo.

Could certainly be worse.
F2P seems to work well this way I guess...
And what's this about Grezzo?

yeah it's not bad. streetpass is unfortunately limited to people living in high population areas. i don't see it really taking off longterm, but nintendo is probably seeing the value in releasing cheaper things for the 3ds, putting deals together, and trying alternative ways to reaching people.

There's going to be the update that will improve SP capabilities, too.

right now i've maxed out mii force's first two levels, and i'm working on the third. i have 22 breeds of flowers, i'm on the 14th floor of the mansion, and i have 960,000 people in my army, with about 6 countries left to go.

and i still can't beat find mii 2 with less than 25 people. god dammit.

Actually, Streetpass Garden (Flower Town in NA) is easily the most complex game in the pack, and it's quite fun. Streetpass Battle, on the other hand, has been a serious letdown. It's poorly balanced, has a soldiers limit cap and later encounters pretty much gobble up your coins like there's no tomorrow.

IMHO: Mansion > Garden > Squad > Battle

I'm getting regular TV ads here in France since the game is out. They aren't that bad regarding the general public, I feel like it's mainly that they don't do much towards "teh hardcore" leading up to a game's release.

Man, even on a crowded college campus, I only get two StreetPasses per week. And I doubt these folks are going to have the new games that you have to BUY.

Edit: week*

There's a VERY simple way to beat Find Mii 2 with less than 25 people. All you need is ~200 or so coins and two high level Miis that can team up.

Using play coins is a waste if you don't use the reviving trick.

Mii Force is my least favorite game of the 4 by far. come at me.

I really like Battle, but I do agree that Mansion is the best one.

Oh, I didn't know it worked like that. Cool.

And what's this reviving trick?

Of the StreetPasses I get in Glasgow (probably under 30 a week) around 20% of them have the new games. Which is surprising; I didn't think so many people would get them. I do like the way the Rabbit gives a nice explanation of what each game involves, I was lapin it up.

I live on the capital of my country and I get 2-5 streetpasses each time I dow downtown. I streetpass 3 people minimun at college or while in the campus. I'm quite happy with it but I am not sure if I would invest on these games.

No regional breakdown? Well I guess this information is enough of a bone thrown.

My anecdotal evidence is I've passed one fellow player. They only had the gardening game. Btw, I am making the assumption that the cat flowerpot meant they had the game, I forgot to check if I could visit their garden.

I think the slightly steep UK price of £13.49 for the bundle it does not tell you about (try to purchase one game after finding out info it tells you it is £4.49; blindly choose to buy game and it reveals the bundle). Then there is the fact there was the bunny crashing for no reason for a lot of people for a while.

Imagine a Nintendo streetpass app that could work on iOS and Android!!! o_O
Imagine the iOS or android policies allowing it to work at all. Plus it would be reverse engineered and thieves would make a steal my Phone app.

For Streetpass quest/find mii you have to unlock find mii 2 before you get the old hero purchase option appearing.

As for these new games. They're fairly good:
Squad - 2 play coins for random hire or 3 play coins for Mii from plaza (can choose up to 3 which is enough to make levels doable, it is easier to see enemies but you lack the firepower 10 Miis would grant)
Garden - 2 play coins for random Mii from plaza (this is the best way to grow plants as you water the plant once regardless of the length of the Mii queue)
Mansion - Find Mii setup basically. 2 coins for a hire.
Battle - Way too expensive (5-15 coins to hire troops, amount you get depends on catle level...levelling up castle costs troops)...sometimes it throws you a bone and you "get lucky" and it gives 10 times the troops you bought.

If you're going with coins alone you will have to devote yourself to a single game though.

Streetpass Battle, on the other hand, has been a serious letdown. It's poorly balanced, has a soldiers limit cap and later encounters pretty much gobble up your coins like there's no tomorrow.
Amen. I just hit my first difficulty spike. Previews level 800...current level 2800...looks like my future has a lot of "do nothing" in it. Does not help that the two Miis I've passed this last fortnight contributed about 50 troops between them.

They're hillariously bad!
From Animal Xing's "Vis that vie de mère/maire(Enjoy your life as a mother/mayor)" that play with all the stereotypes of women,
to the funny "Look they're stealing our shit and we look at them all googly eyed" of Pikmin 3.
Seriously I can't say which ones makes me sigh/laugh more...
Good thing for them Animal Crossing is such a hot product...

If the commercials were truly bad than the game wouldn't be selling so much, but I haven't seen the french commercial so idk

Considering how fucking huge Animal Crossing is on handheld, they could have shown the rear end of a goat for a commercial and it would have sold.
Pikmin certainly won't be helped by the advertising they've chosen....although I'm of a mind to play Pikmin2 now...
And don't believe Nintendo's lies, marketing/advertising is not the primary reason a game usually fails.

On the one hand it's great Nintendo have found success with this. On the other hand it's a bit depressing that Nintendo discovered there was money to be made from bite sized, downloadable social games years after everyone else. They should have been blazing the trail, not following the herd.

@ Starwolf_UK: thank you very much. I could probably try out one among Battle and Mansion.

Btw, great success for these games thus far.

Final country is always the worst abuser of that.
Over 1mil
troops in the first playthrough,
9,999,999
in the second one.

You also have a cap of exactly
9,999,999
troops, but in the third playthrough you hit it near the beginning and are basically steamrolling through every single enemy.

Also, Castle Rank bonuses are shit. Once you get 2-3 spy attempts per game there's no stopping you, but all of the "you can get more troops from Play Coins now" upgrades are useless. I'm only upgrading it to LV20 to get the ticket.

But I love Mii Force.

Mii Force is great, but you finish it quite early (took me two weeks) and after that there's not much to do. You have to get a load of companions to attempt no-casualty/all treasures/high score runs in the later worlds, which makes it hard and annoying if you can only get 1-2 Streetpasses at a time (I'm getting mine repeatedly from a friend and my GF).
