Awesome news - chances of Daniel Craig doing all 5 of his contractual movies? Very good. I would expect this to start filming later next year for a November 2012 release.

The wheels of production are starting to spin up again at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who filed for pre-packaged bankruptcy in Manhattan federal court after rejecting a takeover bid by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and billionaire Carl Icahn.

MGM plans to spend as much as $125 million on operations in the next 15 weeks. MGM said it’s has already spent $20 million to fund production of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, “The Hobbit,” in a co-production deal with Time Warner Inc.’s New Line Cinema, and may need to spend more. Three films based on “The Lord of the Rings,” the sequel to “Hobbit,” grossed about $3 billion at the box office worldwide, MGM said to Bloomberg.

New James Bond films may be released every second year starting in November 2012, MGM said. It aims to own 50 percent of Bond 23, due out that year, with an equal partner paying all of the production costs, it said. Later Bond movies would be wholly owned and funded by MGM, the company said.

Two potential suitors for Bond 23 financing and distribution are Paramount and Sony.

Spyglass chiefs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, who will be taking charge of production at MGM as part of the restructuring deal, are close to Paramount who co-funded the smash-hit "Star Trek" reboot.

Sony distributed the last two James Bond outings under the agreement reached when the company was part of the consortium that took over MGM in 2005. It now owns a 14% stake. Sony have made it public that they would love to be involved again, but it looks like a bidding war between rival distributors will be taking place before Bond 23 is officially green-lit.

2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the EON Productions series of James Bond films. It would be the first time a Bond movie has been released in a year ending in '2' since the debut outing "Dr No" in 1962. Assuming Daniel Craig honours his contract for a third film, it would also be the longest gap between Bond movies without a change in the lead role.

I knew there was no way they would miss 2012. Just another layer of marketing they can add by releasing on the 50th anniversary of Dr. No.

So far away.

If you think about it, if MGM hadn't gone belly up, Bond 23/Craig's 3rd would be releasing this month, and Bond 24/Craig's 4th would be releasing in Nov. 2012. So essentially his third outing now releases when his fourth would have. Sucks, but I can live with that. If this had stretched out another few years, Craig could have gone the Dalton route. Instead, I see no reason why he won't do his final 3 films and leave the role in 2016, at the age of 48. Still nice and young for a Bond actor, so he won't ever have to grow old and silly looking in the role.

At least we have Blood Stone this year. :lol

I'm sort of enjoying it.

Casino Royale was one of my favorite movies of the last decade and I really loved Quantum of Solace too.

I'm down for three more with Craig.

I would expect MGM to pair with Sony again for this one before MGM/Spyglass fully funds the ones after that.

EDIT: Craig has been asked a lot lately about Bond and hes been excited and ready to get going. So Im sure this news pleases him.

I bet he's already received calls from EON telling him to be free for 6 months or so next year :lol

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Good. Hopefully the writers been able to refine the script with all the time they've had. Quantum of Solace was a punchy and highly entertaining coda to Casino Royale but it had some very messy plotting.

QoS was rushed to beat the 2007/2008 Writer's Strike and on top of that, Marc Forster fell in love with some writer and had him on the set doing daily rewrites.

If theres anything Bond 23 shouldn't be, it's rushed. That will be the next thing - attaching a writer (aside from the sadly guaranteed Purvis and Wade).

Sony loves to pay through the nose for their films and the Broccoli's love studios that pay through the nose for their films. So they would be a perfect fit.

Not many people seem to still talk about the fact that Quantum Of Solace (before Avatar was released and blew the record away) was one of the most expensive (per minute) films ever made.

I imagine that Bond 23 (and The Hobbit) will easily swallow up most of, if not all of the $500m MGM production fund.

At this point Sony is the best fit for Bond. But if Cowboys and Aliens hits next summer expect Daniel Craig to try and get out of his Bond contract.

And I'll eat my fucking hat and the coat that came with it if this new MGM 2.0 does manage to make a new Bond film every two years.

As long as this guarantess Casino Royale quality instead of Quantum of Solace I am all for it. Man QoS was such a downer after that awesome "reboot". If only they could get Martin Campbell again.

I guaran-goddamn-tee you that Craig will not ask to be let out of his contract at any point now.

And a 2 year cycle is completely reasonable. It just might mean partnering with Sony instead of making the films 100% themselves.

It was better when I rewatched but stilla huge difference in quality to Casino Royale. If they had not done such an awful camera work during the action scenes, I would already look more favorable upon it.

Sooo shitty to think about potentially going to the theaters for a Bond move this month and now waiting two years :§§ But still. Back on the road.

Can we start talking names yet?

None of the Fleming titles left are very catchy. So I suggest that instead of the longstanding trend of cherrypicking Fleming's title's but not his works be reversed and we start making faithful adaptations of novels whose names have already been used, and calling them something else.

tl;dr Live and Let Die adaptation plz

This is good news. I liked Casino Royale quite a bit. Quantum of Solace though? Can't remember a damn thing that happened in the film. Very forgettable.

Hopefully they get a new director.

i hope we get to see James Bond starring in a thinly veiled adaptation of Ian Fleming's seminal masterpiece Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Speaking of Live and Let Die, it seems that Felix won't return or is that stupid internet rumors? Well the actor anyway.

I still think there are some gems in Fleming's titles. Like the Undertaker's Wind or Whisper, though that sounds extremely morbid.

I also think they need to expand the role of QUANTUM, not just a one off plot by one of their goons. Bond needs a compelling villainous organization again. That's what Brosnan was missing, no connectivity with his movies.

I think thats just typical Bond rumor BS. The only facts about Bond 23 right now are:
- Craig and Dench will reprise their roles
- Sam Mendes will direct

Thats it. Peter Morgan wrote a treatment which EON apparently loved, but it never went further than that and Morgan has left the project. EON most likely will scrap whatever his idea was and start fresh.

I'm just glad things are back on track. I was expecting this crap to drag on for another 2 years minimum.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Great news, so yay, as long as its nothing like Quantum of Solace, which was rubbish.
