James Cameron and games

James Cameron, director of The Terminator and Titanic, is eyeing a movie-MMO tie-in, except he intends for the game to be available weeks before the movie.
Tentatively called Project 880, the director hopes to create some online, sci-fi gaming excitement before the movie is released. According to BusinessWeek, gamers will play the game weeks before they see the movie, which would flesh out the story thoroughly.

"So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level," Cameron said. "We'll create a world for people and then later present a narrative in that world"

The article states that the game is "at least" two years off.

Maybe it's connected to Battle Angel

<3 Battle Angel.

Cameron has made some good movies in his time, so here's hoping he doesn't fuck this up.

With the websites recently registered and rumor mills reporting, I say he's making Avatar. From what I've heard about this project, it would fit in with the MMOs well, as it concerns humans mentally linking up with an "avatar" to explore a distant planet.

He will. Guaranteed. What makes Gunnm so insanely great is the philisophical musings the string throughout the story. If there's one thing I'd have to pick that Cameron is oblivious to, philosophy would be the one. Besides it's gonna sliced to bit simply to fit it into a movie sized timeline. Anyway, just don't be too hopeful, you'd only be setting yourself up for disappointment.

I'd tend to agree this is the more likely scenario. I read the script about 4 years ago, and I seem to remember it struck me as something that would make a good game. I must see if I can find it again.

Why listen to Cameron when we can listen to rumor mills, eh?

Cameron will make Battle Angel. I just think that with recent developments and this mention of a MMO game to tie in with a movie, he's going to do Avatar next.

The man did that shit heap called DARK ANGEL and now he is going to royaly screw over battle angel alita, there is no hope and he realy hasn't done anything that splendid himself.

On a whole this all sounds like an extended pile of crap that is going to result in some half arsed 2 year dev MMO as a marketing ploy for a movie??? Go on prove me wrong James.

Sigh...your grasp on reality is weak at best.

It seems that a lot of creative teams immediately jump to the conclusion that a full, fleshed out story automatically equates to a good story that people care about. It sure didn't work for The Matrix, and I've never really cared for the plot lines in Star Wars games that occur between the movies. Film directors and writers need to understand that people just want more thrills, not more details and minor characters.

Aside from being rather jaded, which considering the situation is all due (IMO, Of course), how is he out of touch with reality?

Oh god...this is where we bash the best and most succesful film directors huh. Lets all shit on Spielberg, Kubrick, Ridley Scott, Orson Wells, and Hitchcock while we are at it seeing as they are all hacks. Then we can all mastrabate furiously to Kojima.

He has been involved with some good movies no doubt, I mean hell I am a big fan of aliens but I wouldn't credit it as being all because of him, frankly I don't see him as the science fiction film god that many people I know take him for, I think as shown by some of his work he is very hit and miss and can do well with a good team behind him but on his own he isn't someone I would proclaim to be a master of his craft.

This isn't me 'bashing the best and most succesful film directors' this is just me saying how I don't feel that james cameron is one of the best as you seem to think, fuck to even compare him to some of those other directors I would see as outright blasphemy, and hell to then act like this is somehow kojima based well then just wake up.

...and then you cite Dark Angel as a major failing of his... when his role was mainly as X.producer and creator.
So once again, you dont know what you are talking about, but of course its your opinion blah blah blah....

Yeah he was the creator and though his involvment was very very limited and mainly in name only post his original involvment the 'creation' that he was credited with I thought was shit regardless of the rest of it.
It is my opinion so it realy shouldn't bother you since if I don't see him as a mighty film god it shouldn't ruin your JC fan club or anything. I don't have undying faith in him so what.

Its a nice idea but it would no doubt create a logistical nightmare and end up with the game launching about 40% done (and sucking hard) because the movie studio needs to meet a deadline.

Maybe im just a cynic though.

I love seeing Hollywood big shots delve into the gaming medium. Let's see if you could hack it. Anyway, I think the movie should be great.
