Nintendo titles have strengthened so much in this generation, so it's really hard for 3rd party games to compete with Nintendo's 1st party titles unless it's an AAA title like Monster Hunter Rise.

The Wii U port has sold well everywhere and must be around 50 million worldwide by now. you can't blame Nintendo, they would have put a lot of development into the Mario Kart for the Wii U, only to see a game that's easily capable of selling 30 million plus, only sell around 8 million. No wonder Nintendo brought a deluxe version out on the Switch, and for most it's a brand new game.

And THAT I can agree with.

I just find utterly stupid when someone spouts the same BS about Sony's performance in Japan as being mainly because japanese became tired with what Sony offered. Rather than what actually happened: Ever since the 7th gen, Sony alligned their strategies and business towards the west(Not just US, mind you), where there were much more money to be made. And it worked. PS is as successful today as it is because of this, and probably it was the best decision they could make.

But its important to admit it came with a cost, which was losing the second biggest country for videogames.Japanese became tired of the west-centric games that "plagued" the system, not to mention the design choices for the hardware and much of the marketing behind it( Remember the whole button layout controversy a few years back, which unified the layout of PS's controllers through the world?). So Japan voted with their wallets. I don't understand this excuse that Sony diehards tell themselves that its because they don't like home consoles anymore and that's the reason for the declining sales, when the OG Switch is probably going to be the best selling console of all time in Japan.

About third party: Nintendo's dominance and complete control of the market is becoming hard to ignore, to the point that even devoted PS developers like Falcom is pulling away from PS(at least to the point of not being exclusive anymore) because it isn't financially plausible anymore, and those types of changes in alliance has a ripple effect to the rest of the world. But that's another discussion entirely that deserves its own thread, not this one.

Yeah, always though that the Lite was a mistake. For me, the Lite was always a "Plan B" in case the Switch failed, and they launched it even with the OG success probably because a lot of work went already in it and they said "fuck it", mostly because the Switch was such an overwhelming success that they thought it wouldn't hurt the sales(And if you look at the numbers, it didn't even come close to the actual Switch in terms of performance)

Yes, Sony only counts their gaming revenue/net sales from SIE/G&NS division which doesn't include the gaming revenue from Sony Music they make with Aniplex, Lasengle in others, which is over a Billion.

And Nintendo not only includes there their gaming revenue, they also count the money they make from other things like toys or theme parks.

So the gaming revenue distance between Sony and Nintendo is bigger than only to compare SIE/G&NS revenue vs Nintendo revenue.

Even considering that, Sony G&NS division (SIE) net sales (revenue) this last FY was 2,740B Yen vs 1,695B Yen for the whole Nintendo, a difference of 1,045B yen. The operating income/profit was 346B Yen for Sony G&NS division vs 640B Yen for the whole Nintendo, a difference of 294B.

The difference between companies in profit is tiny compared to the difference in revenue, and that 294B Yen difference in profit is only a 10.7% of Sony's G&NS revenue. And well, the main reference to analize the market performance for companies is revenue, not profit.

Means nothing when you are getting hammered on your home turf.
Especially with a system that has fewer games than you.

Nonsensical post, you have no idea of Sony's performance in Japan, which is very likely bigger than the Nintendo one.

This would make sense if they only would sell on their home market and if the console sales or retail game sales would be representative of the money they make, when it isn't the case at all.

Physical game sales and console hardware sales are only a small portion of Sony's gaming business, and their home country is only a small portion of the global market. Their game sales are mostly digital (80% in a recent report linked above in the PS graph) and there's a huge chunk of other digital revenue coming from addons and subscriptions that is way bigger on Sony's case than in Nintendo's case.

You can go to their fiscal reports to double check alll this and also see that there's way more worldwide software revenue and games sold worldwide for PS than for Switch worldwide. The Japanese retail game sales and consoles sold don't mean a shit when looking at their whole game business both in Japan and globally. And even mean less if you also take into consideration the gaming business under Sony Music with Aniplex, Lassengle, etc.
